Update Edit:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001001913/article/nfl-execs-pick-major-awards-whos-mvp-rookies-of-the-year

Lead of the article:

A panel of media members votes on the NFL's recognized awards, which will be handed out during "NFL Honors" festivities at the Fox Theater in Atlanta on February 2 (9PM ET/PT on CBS), the eve of Super Bowl LIII.

But what if the league's top talent evaluators voted instead?

So yes, opinion piece of sorts based on a poll of 22 executives around the league.

Doesnt really surprise me. Pioli hitched his wagon to Mark Cassel and went down with him. Seems like most NFL execs dont know much about football, but sure know how to make teams money. Hell they have hundreds of the best people telling them what to do when it comes to player personnel. They just get to pick who the team ultimately picks up, but most of them try to be the smartest guys in the room and go against the general consensus.

And, that's truly unfortunate.

Mahomes only had a single 0 TD game and they still beat the Jags.
He has 9 games with 3+ TDs and by far leads the league and has the team in the driver's seat.

If he doesn't win it --- total sham.

Brees has two 0 TD games and 7 with 3+. If it's all about what that player means to his team - yes, both are undeniably the key players.

Chiefs lost to the Patriots, Rams and Chargers.
Saints lost to the Bucs and Cowboys.

When is the last time the MVP was a QB of a top 3 team and not one of if not the most statistically proficient player?

Guess they'll do all they can to paint this as a "dead heat" and not just a "numbers game". Good luck with all that.

If Mahomes doesn't win it - it's unfortunate, dude has been en fuego.

If? Dude is 457 passing yards away from 5,000 and is 5 TDs away from 50.

@ SEA and vs OAK

Hell, he could achieve 457 and 5 TDs in the OAK game alone.

Half that passing yards needed is 229, which would be the worst game he's had all season... and he's only had 5 games when he didn't throw at least 3 TDs.

SEA DEF has give up 22 passing TDs all season, ranks 14th.
SEA DEF has given up 247 passing yards per game, ranks 20th.
OAK DEF actually ranks slightly better than SEA in passing yards given up per game, but they are dead last with passing TDs.

Mahomes is a lock for 5k yards and 50 TDs...

Mahomes is having a significantly better season than Brees in virtually every statistical category and his team is currently the #1 seed in the AFC, just like Brees' team is the #1 seed in the NFC.

If the only justification for giving the MVP to Brees over Mahomes is that he's been in the league longer, then change it to a lifetime achievement award.

We are 2-2 in the last 4 games. We lost to the Rams and the Chargers. The Ravens gave us all we could handle and we only beat the Raiders by 7 points. That's right, we only beat the beat the armpit of the NFL by 7 points. We only beat the other armpit(Arizona) of the NFL by 12 points.

If we go 1 and out again, Rivers or Brees probably beats Mahomes out.

So according to your assessment, Mahomes gets penalized for close wins over the likes of Arizona and the Raiders, but Brees doesn't get penalized for close wins/struggles against the likes of Tampa and Carolina?

Yes, that's what I'm saying. Veterans like Brees and Rivers will get the benefit of the doubt and the 1st-year starter in Kansas City won't. Brees is an NFL poster boy and Rivers is a veteran in a big market. Fair doesn't really matter.

Associated Press names Mahomes the best QB today

He does things Joe Montana couldn't pull off even in today's NFL.

A lot of young quarterbacks are playing at a higher level or standard than the greats of yesteryear. This is good for Mahomes he thrives with competitive mindset. He os going shatter record books and there will be no question who the Greatest Of All Time is let alone MVP yearly will be. Giddy up .
