As everyone knows this year the NFL implemented rules to protect the QB, i.e, dont land with all your weight on the QB when you tackle him. At the beginning of the year it seemed like they were calling these pretty frequently i think Clay Matthews got called for this 3 times in the first few weeks. Now I dont watch as much football as some of you, but it seems to me that they arent penalizing teams anymore fot it.

So I have 2 questions/thoughts on the matter.

1. Are they really not calling this anymore or have I just missed it?

2. This isnt a question, but I have the feeling the Chiefs are going to get screwed on one of these calls in the playoff game.

It's always tough to see much in the way of trends with such small samples, but it looks like they called a lot in the early season. Then, either by players learning the new rules or refs backing off, they've settled in to a more moderate level at this point.

I know they called it against the Ravens and Texans games when Foles was out for a play can he came back in. But if Clowney didn't lower his head the play would probably stand maybe.

For what it's worth, RTP penalties are a tiny bit up this year compared to last year, but not by much (0.45 per game vs. 0.41 per game last year).

I think they flagged it early and often to drive it home these are the new rules. It planted into their minds that they better lay off or get fined to death. I feel now it's more who you are as a QB to wether a close play gets called. It would be interesting to see how many roughing calls on every QBs in the league broke down. To me I my be wrong but I feel TB would lead the pack.

You can't technically break it down by QB, but you can by team.

So you're correct, TB has benefitted from 9 (tied with Philly). We're in the middle of the pack with 3. Interestingly, Tennessee hasn't gotten a single one this year.
