Hope the rain is over before kickoff. I can deal with snow. Rain and freezing rain, not so much...

From the KC Star today:

It’s still a little more than 100 hours until kickoff of Saturday afternoon’s AFC Divisional Playoff game between the Chiefs and Colts at Arrowhead Stadium.

Obviously, a lot can happen between now and then regarding the weather, but it never hurts to take an early look at what the conditions might be like for the game.

At this time, it seems that Saturday could be chilly and wet at Arrowhead. I looked at what two national weather forecasters and four local meteorologists are saying could happen. They all seem to agree that precipitation is coming but not when it will happen:

The National Weather Service is calling for rain and snow on Friday night that will transition to snow. On Saturday, its forecast says, “Rain and snow likely, becoming all rain after noon, then gradually ending. Cloudy, with a high near 38. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.”

I was at a Christmas Eve game in like 95 or 96, we were playing the Seahawks. It was cold. My wife had entered me in a contest to win tickets at KMart, and holy crap I won. We got an overnight stay at the Double Tree and "backstage passes" before the game. I got to meet Len in the booth, that was cool. But anyway, the game was fuggin' cold. Like in the 20's with wind. Wife (after about 7 hot chocolates) had to bow out...which meant I had to bow out. Chiefs won though. But I left before the 4th quarter.

Then December of 97 Went with my brother who is a Saints fan and our wives. His wife weighs like 90 pounds. It was ice rain the whole time. We left early cuz she was turning blue.

I now get tickets for games no later than November. **** that noise...

Yes. It was soul-zappingly cold.

The thing I’ll never forget is when Lin Elliott missed his third kick and the game was lost how I could hear a small section of celebrating Colts fans all together in the top bowl on the other side of the field (and two levels up). It was so cold and so quiet you could hear their cheers in the opposite corner two levels down.

That is - always - the worst part of leaving a Chiefs playoff game on the wrong side. Hearing the minority fans like they're on the loudspeaker at a funeral and watching the opposing team like they're in a Chuckie-Cheese-bouncy-house dance onto the field.

Make. It. Stop.

Why can't people just be logical about the entire situation? I discuss good stuff, I discuss bad stuff. What is the fucking problem?

It's not a revelation that bad weather hurts throwing offenses and speed teams and helps power teams.

I believe that we are better than the colts at throwing the ball and we are the faster team. I believe that the colts are better at power football. That means bad weather helps the colts. Why is this being negative?

People are babies, jeez.

Mahomes has done fine in rain and cold. As long as he's not too impacted grip wise it's probably a huge advantage for us. Wind would actually be really nice. Luck did fine on a cold windy day in Houston a few months back but that's the closest he's had to a weather game. In rain on a warm day he looked like shit against Jacksonville. I'm still wondering how much his arm strength can handle cutting this type of wind.

I don't buy that it wont affect the Colts. They aren't used to it, period. It may be minimal bu there is going to be some detriment to them, as it wont be the same footing and 'normal' play surface that they are used to as a dome team.

Oh shit. Even better. I was just going off an nfl weather site. Houston never really opens the roof.

So basically... Luck has played no cold games this year or post arm surgery. He hasn't played in below 40 degree temperature in 3 years (?). The only weather game he's played was a rainy day in Jacksonville where the Colts got shut out.

Trying not to get too excited about it... But that could be a big deal.

It was frigid. High of 9, low of -9, and wind chill well below that.

The Chiefs v. Colts game in question was actually played on 1/7/1996 and here is the historical weather data from that day. (https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/KMCI/date/1996-1-7)

I was there and have never been more miserable in my now 48 year old life. It might have been more bearable had the Chiefs won, but it was still freaking cold and my moustache had icicles in it. Cold and windy day in Houston? NRG Stadium has a retractable roof but I believe it was closed in both games down there for the Colts.

The Colts did, however, play @Titans in the rain but it was not really cold. Maybe this is what you are thinking of?

I do not think it rained in Jacksonville either. The Colts O got embarrassed by a divisional opponent in fine weather.

It may have rained @ the Eagles in week 3 and the Colts did lose that game.

I'm not sure the weather is going to have much of an impact on this game. If it turns out to be very windy or heavy snow, my opinion may change.

Sorry about the repost, I didn't see the original thread on the weather. I know Patrick will be ready to rock and roll. I was at the Baltimore game and thought that crowd was great and it was pretty cold that day. It was like 20 degrees when I got to the field at 8 am.

Gotta brag real quick though, I was down on the field for the pregame of that game. I got to stand next to the players for the national anthem. Those guys are massive up close and personal. Most incredible experience of my life.

I've spent the last 5 mins re-reading and trying to figure out why anyone would have downvoted your post.

I studied meteorology quite a bit in college, and I pursue weather as a hobby now.

Basically the NWS is the true source of info, and of course they are only using models as well.

NWS currently has precipitation starting Friday morning in KC, and off and on through Saturday. The temps will be going up and down above freezing, so it's hard to decide on a precipitation type.

Best guess from them is 1-4 inches total, with the smaller totals near KC as of now. There could be some ice/sleet at certain points.

There is no Winter Storm Watch yet, but I would expect one soon if the models stay the same, or at the least a Winter Weather advisory, which is slightly less serious. I doubt a Winter Storm Warning is in the cards for this storm.

I just read the NWS forecast discussion from 3pm today, so a bit of an update to my previous post.

As of now, Looks like KC precipitation starting Friday afternoon as a rain/snow mix, changing to snow overnight. Most models have us above freezing, so they are lowering the snow totals as of now.

Also of note, NWS thinks most if not all accumulating precipitation will be done by noon Saturday, with just sprinkles/flurries after that.

This model has backed off by a couple of inches and all the other models have moved closer to its predictions. Yeah I can't see how any Chiefs fans can really think that this is a good thing. I agree that if conditions get to a certain point, the passing game is impacted, which is not good at all for us. It focuses more attention to the run game, which we all feel the Colts have a strong advantage. For all you lovers of football in the snow, how about you flip on some CFL games to get your fix. We are built for January. It depends on if mahomes can grip the football. If he is, we have a huge advantage. The Colts become one dimensional. We don't. Luck was bad bad in warm and rainy conditions in Jacksonville. And his arm hasn't been tested in windy conditions post surgery.

The model runs that are starting to come out now have it slowing down and tracking further west. Current trends show 5-10 across the metro.

Are they saying it will be snowing all day Sat ?

Should be done by game time. MO snow removal blows ass so may suck getting into parking lots.

starting tomorrow evening thru 10 am or so Sat. If the temp drops sooner, the storm shift track a bit west or slows down then those numbers could increase.as long as it quits by 10:00 am they can get the field plowed and let the heated field take care of the rest.

Fans can just knock the snow off the seats. Get you some cardboard, put it on top of the snow to put your feet on and your all set.

Dark sky.net now has 2-5 inches total for the storm, so they’ve picked up something. I would expect NWS to change their forecast in the morning if the overnight model runs say the same thing. I still don’t trust local news forecasts, who are primarily concerned with ratings, even though I like Gary lezak.

I dont think the Chiefs give a shit about the weather, I dont think it will effect our game either way.
The Colts are the only team that should worry about the weather, it may effect them.

Are people really freaking the hell out over 3-5 inches of snow? Its 3 - 5 freaking inches...

Nobody gives a shit that it snows or not - they just care how it effects the game. You can't fucking throw a football in the snow. What is our best weapon? Patrick fucking Mahomes. If it's snowing heavy snow flakes during the game - it makes it harder.

I was going to put a huge wager on the Chiefs to cover, but if it is going to snow - all bets are off.

Right. The field is heated so it’s highly, highly unlikely to accumulate at all. I’m expecting it to be a chilly game with light wind.

It doesn't seem to be the end of the world at this point. Still a day to see how it plays out though. Doesn't sound like it should affect the game too much.

Although it certainly seems there could be a real concern about people getting to the stadium and in their seats on time. Doesn't really matter if it's snow or freezing rain.

Agree 100% you're crazy if you think the weather has no impact. The Chiefs have one way of winning and thats Mahomes throwing the ball all over the field. Tough to do that in a blizzard.

I have faith Tyreek and Kelce can catch the ball in any weather. And Mahomie can figure out how to zip it to them.

I have a theory that pretty much any weather benefits the home team. Visting teams are geared up to fight the fans, but now they have to fight the weather too? I think it energizes home teams and saps road teams.

FWIW, I always go with the forecasts that come from NOAA for pilots and aviation businesses. Over the years, I've found them to be by far the most accurate. Here is a snapshot of the 36 hour forecast for the Midwest on Saturday, 12 January 2018.

Here is the TAF (Terminal Area Forecast) for KMCI (Kansas City International Airport)

As of right now (just after midnight, Friday 11 January 2018), it looks like the forecast for the KC area is going to be light winds from the east/southeast with moderate rainfall for Friday night/early morning hours Saturday, changing to winds from the east at 8mph and light snow prior to kickoff.

Yeah, this is the dumbest fucking thing I've seen in a while. I was born and raised and still live in the midwest, but travel to work in NE. Those mother fuckers don't care if it snows 4 fucking feet. Most of my work is in the rural mountains of VT. In one day we got over 2' of snow on top of whatever was there, and that didn't put a dent in the daily life of anyone I interacted with.

Last time I can remember Missouri getting 18" in a day and the entire state seemed to fall apart.

Despite what some think about dome teams, I think a wet or sloppy field is a disadvantage for us.

I think it doesn't help Luck. His away splits are significantly worse. He's also worse on grass as well.

The overall storm appears to have slowed down and tracked a bit further west. NWS is saying the precipitation is starting to mix with snow now, with full conversion later this afternoon or evening. The timing of that change will likely be what leads to small or large amounts of snow. If it changes to all snow in KC before 6, I'd go for 6 inches total. If it changes after that, maybe 3-6 inches. It looks like it will be done accumulating snow sometime between 12-4pm tomorrow, with just flurries/showers after that.
