How the trail runner attacked by a mountain lion in Larimer County killed the animal

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers confirmed through a necropsy that a jogger on Horsetooth Mountain in Larimer County survived a rare attack by a young mountain lion by suffocating the animal to death.

“After additional investigation, including examination of the lion, we have confirmed the victim’s account that he was able to suffocate the animal while defending himself from attack,” Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials tweeted Tuesday morning.

Although the runner was bitten and injured after the mountain lion attacked him Monday from behind, he fought for his life and was able to kill the animal. Yet questions still remain.

It’s unclear whether the runner — who has not yet been identified publicly — strangled or smothered the mountain lion. He had no weapons, so he killed the cat with his bare, bleeding hands after climbing on top of the animal, state wildlife officials said.

“It’s an amazing story. Everyone is baffled and impressed,” said Rebecca Ferrell, spokeswoman for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “He had no weapons, no knives or trekking poles with him. How did he do it? It’s pretty rare. That is definitely a twist on this, I’m sure.”

Monday’s incident took place in a 2,711-acre park west of Fort Collins in the foothills of Larimer County. It ranges in elevation from 5,430 feet to 7,255 feet and has 29 miles of recreational trails.

The victim was running on West Ridge Trail when he heard something behind him, Ferrell said. As he turned, he saw the mountain lion pounce for his head and neck, she said. The mountain lion bit him on the face and wrist. The victim managed to partially block the attack with his forearms, Ferrell said. He managed to fight and break free from the mountain lion.

Once he fended the mountain lion off, he counter-attacked the cat by getting on top of it, she said. There are still a few mysteries, though, including exactly how he suffocated the animal.

“We have several questions for him,” Ferrell said.

The victim was still in the hospital Tuesday receiving medical care, she said.

Wildlife officers will go to the hospital Tuesday and ask him many questions about how he survived and then killed the mountain lion, Ferrell said.

Wildlife officers also searched the trail where the runner told them his fight with the mountain lion took place, a Parks and Wildlife news release says. They found the dead mountain lion within feet of possessions the victim asked the officers to look for, it says.

Although preliminary information from the necropsy confirms the jogger’s story about the cause of death, detailed information about the mountain lion’s injuries have not been released and could take several days before they are made public.

After being attacked Monday, the man hiked to safety and was able to get to a local hospital on his own, officials said. On Monday evening, the victim was treated for serious injuries including facial bite wounds and lacerations to his arms, legs and back.

Every type of potential scenario is being considered including the unlikely possibility that the mountain lion was rabid, Ferrell said. Doctors will treat him for possible infections, she said.

Mountain lion attacks in Colorado are rare, officials said. The act of running may have triggered the young lion’s instinct to hunt.

“Mountain lion attacks are not common in Colorado and it is unfortunate that the lion’s hunting instincts were triggered by the runner,” said Ty Petersburg, area wildlife manager for CPW. “This could have had a very different outcome.”

Actually, if it was me, I wouldn't have killed it. I would have gone alpha on it and then domesticated it to serve as my pet.

This was a news story here. Actually being attacked by a mountain lion is really rare, especially if you're an adult. I think I've heard of two other attacks in my 25 years in Colorado, and both were on kids. (Pro tip: don't let your small child run out of your sight on a trail.)

It was probably just curious since attacks are rare. Still scary as hell and also earned my respect knowing it was probably trailing me for quite some time before I noticed it. I seriously doubt I would have been able to make a clean shot with my bow if it did decide to charge.

I'd say worse case scenario two start climbing the tree and you start kicking at them but one bites your ankle then you lose your grip and tumble hitting every branch and your lip gets snagged and then you hit the ground with a thump and the third one pounces on the back of your neck but your able to get him off only to have the other two jump and unleash holy hell claws on your face and tear flesh from your skin and you bleed and they eat you practically alive but you scamper away limping and you see a road try to flag a car but it doesn't see you in time and you get hit by a car and I'm sorry your dead.

Bobcats arent big enough to take on a grown human. In Missouri they scram pretty quik at encounters with humans. They aren't much larger the a very big domestic cat. I have ran across them in field surveying they are pretty wary and mostly hunt at night.

I ran across a bobcat on a running trail a couple of years ago, but I'm not sure it outweighed my biggest house cat. So I wasn't worried about it at all.

That said, my biggest house cat savaged me a couple of times just playing around, so it wouldn't be fun to be attacked by a 15-pound bobcat. Not fatal, but not fun.

You don't seem to want to accep the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In Vietnam his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by atrition. Well Rambo was the best.

When I did my African safari thing a few years back, we drove by a pack of adorable wild African dogs who were lounging on the side of the road. The guide said that if we got out of the land rover, they were pretty much a sure bet to rip us to pieces. And the cape buffalo were the animals they most kept an eye on when we did get out. Apparently cape buffalo are aggressive.

So yeah, dogs and bulls.
