I think it is a more expensive knockoff or at best a reduction of regular broth/stock.

Bone broth only uses marrow and bone for flavor so I'm sure it has less fat than broth that includes actual meat.

As to if 'it's a thing.'

It exists, but it's not some wonder substance.
If you make it yourself, it's a good way to use something most people throw away to give your dishes umami and body. But don't buy any hype about essential minerals or revujenating properties. It's collagen and marrow. It's good for flavor and mouth feel. The end.

Some of the health gurus swear by its health benefits

I'm pretty sure bone has been in broth for hundreds of years, so not really something new.

An oncology nurse told me that she had a patient that drank a cup every day to help keep her white count high enough for chemo. She said that she's never seen any scientific studies, but the patient never had to have her treatments delayed. I tried it, and OMG... it was one of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted.

I sense an off-season trend that is ... well ... disturbing.

The regular broth you get at the store has bones in it when it is being made. They put the bones along with some throw away meat to make it. They don’t take all the meat off the bone and just use it, it wouldn’t be cost effective to do that.

I bought some because I heard that the collagen helps your joints...it's not something I can drink like tea though...it's a little yucky. So I'm just gonna add it to soup or gravy or something...

Exactly.

All it is is just stock. Pork stock, chicken stock, whatever. You throw in a shank or some bones and boil away.

Maybe it’s not salty enough. Try adding a couple of shakes before swallowing

I make broth from chicken & beef from scratch then turn it into soup a couple times a winter. It's a good background thing to do while watching football, hockey, or playing a video game and sipping on some bourbon.

It's a cold weather thang!

Funny this thread should come up. Was at the store yesterday and saw 3 bones (maybe 3" each?) for $6 - what the actual fuck?

My wife is similar. We like to get a rotisserie chicken and use the bones to make our soup. One chicken damn near provides dinner for a week!

Digestion breaks down the collagen. What you derive from collagen in your diet is amino acids. It's not like calcium or potassium. Your body still has to generate it's own collagen from your nutrition anyway. Collagen levels in diet aren't correlated with collagen production by your body.
