I get you but those sacks didn't really accomplish anything in the end. It was still the second worst defense in the NFL that cost us a chance at a championship. The defense was utterly helpless when it mattered most. Better to start fresh, IMO.

The strength of this draft is edge rushers and defensive line. If we can come out of the draft with a couple pass rushers and a couple of defensive backs I believe we will be better in the long term and short term. The upgrade in coaching will be more impactful with a culture change on D.

Also, I think once the initial free agent frenzy settles down we will be able to fill most of our remaining holes with cheaper veterans who think playing with Mahomes will give them their best shot at a ring.

That's a part of it. Going along with that, Veach needs some cap room for FAs, rookies and to negotiate Hill and Jones to longer contracts. He wants to do that now so we we can get Mahomes his contract next year.

Another part is that we get something and don't just let Ford go.

And another part is that contracts are intended to pay players for future production. Ford has one great year in the last 5. He's been injured or mediocre in several other years. I get the impression that Veach just doesn't trust Ford to produce over the long run given his history.

While you might very well be right, I would remind you of two things:
1. That excellent pass rush was still part of a historically bad defense.
2. More importantly, we don't know the full picture yet. The offseason is young. Veach isn't an idiot. I'm pretty sure our two top pass rushers next year aren't going to be K-Pass and Speaks. We have a long way to go.

1. Had nothing to do with the pass rush though. More a reflection of play calling and lack of talent on the back end. And in today's NFL defense starts with rushing the passer. Oakland just got AB, Denver got Flacco, and Rivers is still in San Diego. KC just got rid of 2/3's of the best part of last years defense... makes sense...

2. Veach isn't some savant either. Last years off-season's early returns don't look especially good right now. What proof do you have of his genius?
