Owings has been better than he showed last year. We'll see how he does over the first couple of months. Having said that, the situation is likely the result of both Perez being out of the lineup and Goodwin failing to make the roster. They are committed to keeping Soler out of the outfield a certain amount of days per week (not sure how many). So it's either Whit or Gore. Easy decision. If Perez isn't hurt, Schwindel/Duda are likely not on the 25 and we are carrying an extra outfielder...and Whit would be at 2B most of the time.

The good news with what they're doing is that if Owings just doesn't return to his former form, it might force them to let him go at some point and go ahead with the Lopez era at 2B.
