I'll be back in Missouri during the first week in May. When do the morels pop up? It's been years since I've had some delicious fried mushrooms. It would just be awesome if we could have some.

Yeah I think they can freeze.

Lots of rain the past couple days and Sunday or Monday it's supposed to be 70. They should be everywhere after that

Too early! Can they be froze? How long do they stay good?I'd be shocked if they freeze well. If they're like mushrooms they have a lot of moisture in them so freezing would destroy their texture.

I've got 2 places in NETX and have yet to find any and it makes me sad. Thinking about ordering some spores and trying to seed a bed in the woods next to the house.

Fried morels? Heathen. It's like taking Patrick Mahomes and dressing him up in drag and having him run go routes as a WR.

Seared. Sautéed. I'll admit to not loving fried food as I feel like that simplifies the taste of a lot of things that succeed on their own merits.

Great produce on its own - whether it's a carrot or a turnip or lettuce or morels -does best when it stands on its own without a crutch. Morels in my mind are the epitome of that.

Look. The fact that this mushroom has a fucking (seasonal) thread on its own on CP is a testament to its greatness. I just view it a little bit different but even here the Capulets and the Montagues can come together.

We've hunted them for 40 years and the best way we've found to keep them long term is to dry them in the food dehydrator and put them in mason jars. Just pop them in water for a couple hours and they re-hydrate on their own pretty well.

My mom's got a buncha land up in Cosby, Mo and I intend to poke around there once I start to see them down here closer to the city in bunches. Buddy taught me a little trick to train your eyes without actually seeing one in the woods. Pull your phone out and look at morel pics right when you're walking in and you'll be better at finding that first one. Then it's on.

Most morels that are shipped are usually dried before packaging. They will either dry out (not wrapped in plastic) or get mushy/slimy (shipped to keep moist) in the regular shipping process. If you have a way to dry them then they ship quite well.

We would ship them to my Dad in Arizona. My wife would dehydrate them to send and then he would rehydrate them in heavy cream and fry them. They aren't as good as fresh, but not too bad.

Food dehydrator works best. You can also dry them in a brown paper bag in the fridge. Takes longer but still works.

But my favorite way is to cook them in foil on the grill in butter and some onion and garlic powder.

What do you do on the grill? Just wrap them up and make a foil packet or what? I've got enough that I'm willing to try a different method this time around with some.
