The defending NFC champions opened their offseason program on Monday, without a pair of key defensive players present.

Coach Sean McVay acknowledged to reporters that linebacker Dante Fowler and cornerback Marcus Peters did not attend. McVay didn’t fault them for being absent, pointing out that the workouts are “voluntary” and that they “had communicated well ahead of time.”

“Certainly, it is voluntary and we understand that,” McVay said. “But as long as we just know they’re in a good place or what’s going on with them. . . . [Fowler and Peters will] be here once they get some of those things taken care of that they had to do.”

McVay also expressed hope that cornerback Troy Hill and linebacker Cory Littleton, both unsigned restricted free agents, will soon join the team.

“I think once they come in, you’d like to be able to get those guys to sign,” McVay said. “That’s something that we’re navigating through right now. Cory was the other guy that he communicated to us that he had something going on. We don’t expect anything to be different. Those are guys that we hope to be on our team and looking forward to working with.”

For a team that is known for its offense, the L.A. defense also has significance. After all, it held the Patriots to a mere 13 points in Super Bowl LIII, a thin silver lining in what ultimately was a 10-point loss.

I'll never fault a guy for trying to maximize his contract. You have a very short window to make as much as possible. It's what you've been working your whole life for. And if you get hurt? Teams don't give you pity pay.

Get paid.

It’s known Tyreek wants to get paid but he’s at OTAs. He is the definition of a team player

Peters received an overall grade of 60.1 from Pro Football Focus, which ranked 95th among all qualified cornerbacks in 2018. He lost his chances of maximizing his contract last season.

He is working a youth football camp in Hawaii along with beast mode and another player

That might be why peters isn’t there

Horse poop excuse. Those camps are scheduled well in advance. Workout dates are announced well in advance You don't commit to the camp unless you don't plan on attending the team workouts. Simple.

He's also in a jam. He doesn't have the luxery of not being a team guy. I really don't think KC will hand over a bank breaker for him. No WR leads you to the title. Proven fact.

Hence the O in OTA.

If he's in shape for the season then who cares?

Dante Fowler's uncle was a client of mine when I sold to the property management industry in Virginia and Maryland. He managed 3 large shopping centers and I remember him bragging about his nephew.

Dante's cousin Mika also worked for us at our company for a very short time in sales.

Aaron, for example, has 37 pieces of flare. And a terrific smile.

If Dante feels that the bare minimum is enough, then okay. But some people choose to do more, and we encourage that.

I bet you’d be the first one to panic if Pat or Hill didn’t show up.

Lol who cares right?

Would of been cool if you asked the Uncle where the fuck did Dante learn to talk? Or if Dante is special needs?

So realistically, since they are voluntary, it is okay if all 95 or so guys decide to skip OTA's? Who cares?

No, they're voluntary workouts. Obviously the preference is to have everyone there, but if they don't it's not like these guys are at home eating cheetos all day on the couch

That's what happens when you wheel and deal like the Rams did and try to purchase a Super Bowl through Free Agency and trading for guys with only one or two years left. Price of doing business.
