Living in NW Indiana, Detroit is only 4 hours away. Thinking of getting a hotel close to stadium and parking at hotel and walking there. I’ve never been to Detroit. Is that area as ghetto as what I imagine Detroit being? Any tips on where to stay and what to do on a Saturday night there for a trip away with the wife?

I suggest staying in a place located 4 hours away from Detroit.

I survived the bums in Seattle so you can probably survive the gunfire in Detroit.

Really? Worse than Chicago? I had no problems going to Bears preseason game last year

That would require me to go to Beirut West.

Never been to Detroit but I've seen 8 Mile 17x and think I know my way around. Happy to meet up with other like-minded survivors like yourself at the game as this will also be my first time tempting fate.

Stay West of 39 in Allen Park or Taylor if you want to be close. Lincoln Park is ok. That or completely out of the city to the North. Melvindale starts shit and going East is more shit the closer to the city you get. Wayne is kind of shit. Stay out of Ypsilanti.

Edit: Forgot you mentioned staying within walking distance. Not sure I recommend staying right downtown. Place is a shit hole of epic proportions, especially at night. It's better than it used to be, but not by much. I mean you're in the heart of Detroit being at the stadium. The practice facility is in Allen Park. You're within a 20 minute drive. If you take the bus it's about an hour. I'd go to the burbs I listed. I don't know. To each their own.

Answer your own question about what it's like. You said you live in NW Indiana. Do you walk around Gary without worrying at night? If you do, you should be relatively ok with doing the same in Detroit. If your answer is no, then you're probably best off not doing it in Detroit.

What's worse....

Wanting to stay in downtown Detroit?

Or living permanently in Indiana by choice?

I’ve never actually been to Gary. From what I’ve read online so far, the Greektown area by the stadium is actually a happening place and seems to be a lot of nice hotels and places to eat there. Talked to a friend that travels for business and she said Greektown was a great place.

Agreed, the area around the stadiums is a nice normal area. I've been down there for plenty of ballgames and concerts. Both stadiums, the hockey arena, the FOX theatre, the Filmore, all right there. There is alot of foot traffic during events, I wouldn't hesitate to stay in this immediate area.

You could probably just buy a house close to downtown for cheaper than a hotel room

Can’t be any worse than Cincy amiright?? Jk. I’ve had one good experience there and one worst experience at a game there.

Also, I will be buying tickets to this game. It's a 1pm Sunday game.

If im in town for business, I'll probably park at the MGM Grand and walk to the Stadium, play some craps after the game then head back to the hotel.

If im coming in from out of town, I'll probably at the Holiday Inn downtown.

Yeah, they are comparable. I've taken my mom to Royals games in Cincy and Detroit, in the evening. We had a good time.

NFL games are a little different, a lot of drunk agitated people. I dress neutral when I'm by myself, which I normally am.

I've never been, but from what I understand the city is really making an effort to revitalize their downtown.

The new arena is near the baseball and football stadiums, and they are building a lot of commercial space around it that I think is supposed to be similar to Power & Light.

I really don't think it'll be bad as long you aren't an idiot and avoid the obvious rougher parts of town.

The spruced it up alot when they did the stadium project. It looks a lot nicer now. Nice doesn't mean safe and downtown is never safe but the extra police and security attention during game days helps. If you're right there, stay right there, and don't intend to venture into doing stupid things you should be fine. I don't live down there anymore and don't really intend to go back there. Like all cities, you have your good hoods and your bad ones. But I'm telling, stay the fuck South of the 375/75 corridor and don't go North towards Wayne State University. Forest Park, Midtown, Poletown, Milwaukee Junction, etc are just bad news. Just keep to downtown, Brush Park at the furthest.

Downtown Detroit seems pretty gentrified. Don't be stupid or leave valuables in your vehicle and you'll survive.

This is our away trip this year also. Going to stay at the Hilton Garden Inn that is close to the stadium. We usually do a fancy dinner and try the local BBQ to compare it to our beloved KC promised land. Any suggestions?

I hope you already have reservations because when I checked it out, it says it’s booked up for that Saturday night

I must have lucked out. Booked from Thurs-Mon. Going to do the Ford Library in Ann Arbor(the museum is in Grand Rapids...strange they split it up, Truman is one stop shop - stinks because the stairwell from the fall of Saigon is at the museum). Will checkout the model T museum and Mo-Town museum. Glad the game is in September.

Turns out I'll be at the game but a very quick in-and-out trip with my wife's entire family. Where are your seats?

And glad you're surviving Detroit. I'm disappointed I won't be able to do sight-seeing across 8 Mile.

I was there when Marcus Allen played for the team. Had a blast! Fans were good, treated us well, we had a great time. One guy even offered me his leather jacket for my signed Joe Montana jersey.

If you wear a Brett Perriman Chiefs jersey, nobody from Detroit would mess with you.

But you might have to watch out for any Chiefs fans in town above the age of 44.
