View Full Version : Life Hey you mechanics! Why the *&#@*! does 2005 F150 hood release have two cables??

One cable for popping the hood from the inside the cab,

And a *(&^%#@ 2nd cable connected to a little lever beneath the grill to fully release the latch.

There are at least 10 videos on youtube showing what to do when the cab release cable breaks...

BUT NONE showing what to do when the 2nd release cable breaks!!!

I spent an hour Sunday pushing and prying stuff with a 12" screwdriver hoping to miraculously hit the magical button. Nope.

Got to the point where I didn't care and was considering smashing a hole in the grill to get to something.

HOW DOES ONE OPEN THE HOOD IF THE 2ND CABLE IS BUSTED?

I will name my next dog after you if you can tell me how.

Thanks!

Oh it's fun. Is it broke right at the lever by the bumper?

People normally discard the second cable immediately, just like a mattress tag

Cooper barrett will be along shortly with the correct answer, along with a story of how he consulted with the Ford engineers on the design.

I wish. :(

Broke up by the latch. I can see where it goes under something.

Here's what the latch looks like. You need to figure out howto move that hook looking piece at the top somehow.

The second release is there so that when idiots pull the hood release in the cab while doing 75mph the hood doesn't fly open and smash through the windshield. But hey, go ahead and remove the second safety latch, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Just trying to get it OPEN, noob. Just trying to get it open so we can charge the battery.

Anything else you wish to add to the discussion? :)

Can you see some bolts holding the piece it latches to on the hof? It may not have any (built in) but it's worth a shot

The title of your thread asked why the thing had two hood releases. Now you know.

Most trucks just have a LEVER that you PUSH aside for the final latch release.

The piece of junk F150 has the lever at the bottom connected via cable.

You are oh for two so far. :)

Thanks for your feedback! Greatly appreciated.

I'll stop by the garage to ask them if they have an extra F150 lying around that I can reverse engineer.

Do you see much often where you go "what the hell were the engineers thinking when they designed this"?
