Here's the thing with this pick. Saunders is a GOOD player. I'd compare him to someone you might happen to remember... Dontari Poe. But given what was on the board I'm really scratching my head. They had receivers, tight ends, and corners they left on the board for this guy. I just don't know if he was a need fit.

Still a VERY good pick in the long run. This guy has HOF potential as surprising as that may sound.

Overall I'm good with this pick. It's 100% BPA from what I can tell.

Honestly, Fuller, Ward, and Breeland isn’t horrible. With the Honey Badger and Thornhill, I’m feeling pretty good at safety. It’s our linebackers that I’m the most worried about.

And hopefully Sutton's scheming and telling them to hesitate was the problem and they will play much better under Spags.

Per the Athlon Sports draft magazine,

He’s gone viral with his backflips, showing that he is an NFL caliber athlete at 320 pounds. Saunders dominated FCS competition. Built like a wrecking ball, playing with excellent balance and the ability to battle through traffic. Burst at the snap is good, allowing him to get penetration as a one gap defender. Surprisingly fluid athlete with the lateral movement to cover multiple gaps and eat up blocks

A scrappy, upfield disruptor type... I like it

I really like Saunders as a player. I have no issues with that part of it. In fact, I thought he was the 7th best DT in this draft and the 6th best that I'd actually draft (Simmons off my board).

I just leave the day scratching my head that he was actually the selection. Not addressing CB bothers me with guys like Love and Oruwariye sitting there. Not addressing LB with Mack Wilson sitting there bothers me. I wasn't overly excited about KC trading up for another midget receiver and I thought Campbell was the better player at that position anyhow, so I guess the day just more or less left me in a state of shock.

The Seahawks's version of the 4-3 Under (https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/seahawks/defense-101-understanding-how-the-seahawks-play/) has a position called the Big DE. They basically put three DTs out there along with a smaller pass rusher at LEO. During their Legion of Boom years, they had Alan Branch and Brandon Mebane at DT, Red Bryant at SDE and Chris Clemons and Bruce Irvin at LEO. Clark was frequently at LEO the last couple of years in the latest version of that defense.

I wonder is Spags is envision Jones as our version of the Big DE? Jones at SDE, Nnadi and Saunders at DT and Clark at LEO. I really didn't think DT was a need but this selection makes more sense with that view.

I was pondering those picks as well these are good points.

That’s a far more articulate version of my thoughts on the pick.

Really versatile front for both run and pass.

He's a great player and I love the pick. I usually cringe at "he's the next Aaron Donald" type comparisons but that swim/rip inside is very Donald like.

That being said, I think this guy makes no difference in beating Brady. Our pass rush last year was good and it couldn't touch Brady. Thornhill and Honey Badger are more important in beating Brady than our pass rushers are, watch this pre superbowl analysis of how you beat Brady to see what I mean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu9Jf6V2JwA

It's going to make a difference when Michel tries to run through the A-gap

Runs up the middle, being unable to cover the middle of the field and failing to have a safety cover a TE is what killed us that game.

Our new scheme, linemen and safeties are going to help in all of those situations.

Not to be pedantic, but I said beating Brady, not beating the Patriots.

Clark instead of Ford, adding Okafor, moving to a 4-3, adding better run support from the safety position all make more of a difference to stopping the run game than Saunders will in my opinion. I'm not even sure how much of a run defense upgrade Saunders will be over a Sophmore Nnadi, so you only get any run defense benefit from Saunders when Jones is off the field.

I'm just stating how I think he can help us beat NE.

When teams like NE go to heavy formations, Spags likes to run 4-3 Under.

Frosty had this post earlier in this thread concerning the 4-3 Under:

I don't know if he'll do something similar to Seattle, but I suppose it's very possible. If that's the case, Khalen would definitely contribute and be a big factor in our run defense.

No one is talking about changing Jones's position, just that you can move him around to mix up pressure. I just watched all of Jones, Ford and Houston's sacks of 2018 and Jones got 1 rushing from the edge, and then Ford got 2 and Houston got one where Jones was set up on the edge and they were inside against a guard so they already did it last year and now they just have more options.

I’m pretty sure our DC was able to get pressure on Brady, with his line, which helped lead to a SB victory against a historic team. You need to be clicking everywhere to beat him. Getting the right pressure up the middle is very important.

The older Brady becomes the more statuesque he becomes. If Jones, Nnadi and Saunders can rotate and stay fresh and keep making Brady make his mind up in 0.8 seconds from the middle the more mistakes will be made. Also, when Spags was wrecking shit in NY didn't he have a killer d-line? Last question - Do you think Daly popped wood after getting both Clark and Saunders?

The fading thing might simply be a factor of diet; once in the program that might go away. Plus, in college I think he was a full-time starter, that won't be the case with the Chiefs. At least not this year.

That first step and lateral agility are both elite level, IMO. Haven't a guy his size on the Chiefs with that combination in a long, long time.

I can’t help but think this dude is going to ball out even as a rookie. The guy is so ****ing quick and he understands how to use his hands and his body to shed blocks.

He’s also in arguably the best possible place to succeed. He’s got great coaching and he’s surrounded by outstanding rushers.

Teams are going to be watching Clark on the outside already. Put this guy in the A gap next to Jones and it becomes very stressful for the interior of an OL. Jones pad level is high because he is so damn tall, so OL are watching his hands around their shoulder.

Now enter Saunders who has a low pad level since he’s 6 ft. That guy is going to get a ton of opportunities this year.

Call me a homer but I could see this guy getting 4 or 5 sacks as a rookie.

Agreed

In their first chat this spring, Saunders asked Fox to do him a favor. He wanted Fox to help tell the Chiefs’ coaching staff that he can still run the ball.

Fox did his best during the team’s offseason practices this summer, even though the specialists usually do their work on a separate field from the rest of the team. Fox explained to Dave Toub, the Chiefs’ special-teams guru, that Saunders could be a surprise option on a fake punt or fake field goal. Fox also shared stories of Saunders’ legendary exploits in high school — the moments when he stiff-armed a defender, hurdled another defender and then ran over another defender in the same play — with kicker Harrison Butker, long-snapper James Winchester and punter Dustin Colquitt.

A few times during the practices, Fox turned his head toward the Chiefs’ defense to see what Saunders was doing.

“He was so fun to watch,” Fox said. “I wish I could see him play running back again, honestly.”

3rd round FCS player needs a redshirt year. Not too surprising.

At least we spent a 3rd rounder on him instead of a 2nd like we usually do. Small school workout warriors who take time to develop in the pros shouldn't be drafted in the 2nd round.

It's nice that Kpassagnon is finally contributing in some way to the team now, but it took too damn long. If Saunders takes that long to become a part of the rotation that we rely on, it's less of a big deal.

Hopefully he gets going next year.

Veach is not good at drafting DL.

Nnadi at least seems to get the job done more often than not. Again, when your defense is as consistently shitty as ours, it can occasionally be tough to figure out where the good players actually are, if there are any.

But at least he's a starter who has made at least a handful of nice plays in his career. More than you can say for the Veach DL guys who rarely see the field.

Is there any hope this fucker can contribute at any point this season? Our defensive tackles fucking suck for the most part after Chris Jones, so it's not like there's much blocking him.

Kpass (on Dorsey's watch), Speaks, Nnadi, and now Saunders. Nnadi is the only major contributor so far, and he's still pretty meh. If these were all 4th or 5th round picks it would be understandable that they're raw and not ready to contribute. But year after year we keep taking these guys in the 2nd and 3rd round and getting almost nothing out of it. If Saunders can't get on the game day roster within another 2-3 weeks they might as well find a way to IR him instead of wasting a roster spot on another DL bust.

You pay Chris Jones. D-linemen that can consistently dominate the LOS don't grow on trees. This is becoming more and more a passing league, and with our style of play, having a dominating interior pass rusher is worth paying for. We get up on teams early and then pin our ears back and attack on defense.

And in the meantime you do what you can to coach up any issues he has with run defense.

The middle of our Dline has been terrible against the run. Jones and Williams have no gap discipline at all, they just want to rush the passer. I wonder if Williams is trying to do what Jones did last year, abandon the run defense trying to get a big contract by sacking the QB.
