I think he'll be a good RB, or at least a decent one, or maybe not good at all, but at least he will probably play RB for maybe the Chiefs.

He's really good as a WR.

I think Reid has seen some of that wheel route stuff out of WVU and wants Dtrainn to catch a screen and run for 70 yards.

Offense just got another fun weapon.

I like this pick. He's super fast, but doens't look like the body type of someone who gets hurt easily. Hopefully he can catch, because he can play some out of the slot. Fits with our style of running game.

Thompson is among the most explosive athletes in this draft. He has a naturally low center of gravity and displays outstanding contact balance in bouncing off tacklers. Lateral agility and quick feet make him even more elusive. He’s deadly in space, with a third gear to run away from DBs. Can split out wide and create separation as a route runner

Whew, gonna need a cigarette after that profile... Veach is working feverishly to offset the Hill situation

Great sizzle pick

Tape is impressive. I like it a bunch and wouldn’t be surprised if he translates it to being more than a 3rd down back. Looks like a more powerful runner than Damien Williams to me.

If there was an aspect of the run game the Chiefs missed after cutting Kareem Hunt, it was the ability to break tackles and gain yards after contact. Looks like Darwin can help with that.

The flexibility as a receiver is nice, too.

I think I read that he only ran a 4.5 at his pro day, but he looks a lot faster than that. And more importantly, THE GUY BREAKS TACKLES. And a lot of them.

If he's only going to be used as a DAT-like gadget player for the next year, we've gotten a real upgrade as DAT would go down when you blew on him.

That's what I'm hoping for with Darwin. A lot of his highlights are guys hitting him dead on the hip, but he bounces 2 yards to the side and starts running again.

I think it's very clear Reid and Veach know exactly what it takes to be a great RB in this system.

actually, they are 2nd and 5th in percentage of tackles from the first contact. Darwin was tackled by initial contact 59% of the time, and James Williams 52% of the time.

It's a slightly more specific stat than missed tackles, but I think it is super valuable, especially when our offense designs plays to have initial contact on a runner occur four yards downfield on the regular.

Slightly off topic but I feel the same about Greg Lewis & Tyreek Hill. We praise how Tyreek Hill has become the most dangerous weapon in the NFL but it is a night and day difference with how Tyreek has progressed with his ability to play the receiver position from when he was drafted.

With the Mecole Hardman pick, it is eerily similar how the Chiefs are attempting to turn a raw athlete into a complete WR. The Chiefs right now covet athleticism as opposed to a receiver who is more polished.

I think they know what they need as far as intelligent enough to learn the playbook and athletic enough to do what’s needed of him.

Yeah but you're understating the ability to turn a phenomenal athlete into a complete receiver. John Ross, Perriman, Heyward-Bey etc. there are about a million names of receivers who were "athletic enough" to do what's needed of them. What I am praising Greg Lewis, Andy Reid and co specifically on is the job they've done with Tyreek Hill into turning him into the most dangerous player in football in a long time.

Greg Lewis in a brief interview touches on it here:

https://twitter.com/chiefs/status/947164383943077888

Athletic enough to do what is needed + learning the playbook does not = results in the NFL. I think as a fan base we don't give enough credit to the Chiefs coaching staff on turning a lot of players into some of the best at their position in the NFL.

Patrick Mahomes
Tyreek Hill
Kareem Hunt ... :(
Chris Jones

A lot of these guys have blossomed into the top tier at their respective positions. You got to give credit to the individual themselves but I also put a lot of merit into the environment and who they are learning from as well. That's also why with the Chiefs drafting I usually give them a little more rope on their selections. We've been one of the better franchises with the NFL draft (lately at least) and honestly I trust their decision making.

Anyways though I don't want to get too sidetracked on this discussion. I love this pick by the Chiefs- a lot of advanced stats say that this kid is exceptional in breaking tackles. In today's NFL you live and die with matchups and one missed tackle usually leads to a big gain.

Also Kissel mentioned yesterday Thompson stood out day one:

Utah State’s Darwin Thompson—the Chiefs’ fifth-round pick—displayed the ability that people have come to know about the 5-foot-8, 198-pound playmaker in the passing game. Another running back—Marcus Marshall out of James Madison, who is attending on a tryout basis—showed some ability in the passing game as well.

There was one play in particular that Thompson had the ball in his hands and was running out in space down the field and did a perfectly-executed jump-cut to explode back to the right and into the clear for a huge gain. It showed the athleticism that people have been wanting to see.

Listened to his interview after day 2 of rookie minicamp. Hungry, smart, and a GIANT chip on this guys shoulders.

* He said the hardest part about learning Reid's offense isn't even the offense, it's just the terminology and remembering the words and how the Chiefs say things.

* Said running/catching the ball is easy, it's pass protection and learning to pick up keys that's the hardest task.

* Said he's practiced punt returns, but never done them in game. Added he's willing to do anything, he's an athlete, and you could put him on kickoffs, in the slot, wherever, put him anywhere.

* Said he makes up for his height in the weight room, with a strong core and lower half.

* Said when he first started out he didn't even have enough money for football cleats, used to wear his soccer cleats way back.

* Does it for the kids from his home town, wants to show them it's possible.

* Called Reid a hall of famer and the chiefs a perfect fit for him.

It's because he isn't 6-0 220 pounds.

The NFL has adjusted it's thinking with drafting QBs based on their height/weight, but the RB position has yet to catch up.

No one will take a guy this size in the first three rounds unless he runs a 4.2 or something insane, or had crazy production at a major school.

He'll be our phillip lindsay, only with a man's name instead of a woman's.

Philip Lindsay would be like... the 4th best RB we've had on the team in the Andy Reid era.

I hate how people are starting to compare our players to him. Maybe, just MAAAAYBE I can see the size/weight thing, but I don't think people are using Lindsay in that way in the comparison, I think it's more as a, "Look at the late round/UDFA RB who's pretty good! What a steal!"

I can name several other 6th/7th/UDFA RBs to recently hit the NFL who are/were better than Lindsay. One of them is currently on the Chiefs (Damien Williams)

LOL it's not just the look though, he just has that "thing" about the way he moves through the tackles that reminds me of Tyreek as well. And remember, we got Ty In the late rounds when folks never really had much faith in smaller receivers then too. I've just got a feeling both Thompson and James Williams are gonna be huge for this team in the years to come.

Always kinda makes me wonder why we care so much about the 40, especially for running backs

How often are they really asked to go 40 yards? I think speed for a rb is pretty overrated u less they’re just speed freaks like Charles was.

I feel like, injuries aside, the only thing with potential to slow this offense down is weak o-line play. Even then it would take some crafty scheming from opponents to defend Andy’s offense.

I wish I could remember where I read this thing I'm about to write this post about, but I'm sure one of you guys know the source and can post a link-thing ...

Anyhow, I read this article (about a month or so ago) dealing with height and the correlation to general athleticism. Basically, the idea is this; the shorter the athlete, the more compact is their musculature. This translates into more power, more resiliency, and more explosiveness ... among other characteristics. In other words, a condensed frame is more effective and generates more force with less effort (ergs and whatnot).

Interestingly, they stated that size does not necessarily correlate to injury (which seems to be more of a genetic and/or luck factor). It does, however, mean the athlete is pound-for-pound stronger than taller humanages. In other words, small can kick your ass, break tackles, knock your wind flat out, and score touchdowns.

This is why you don't see 6'5 or taller gymnast. It takes a lot more power to generate the same results. Height can make a difference in speed- since a shorter person has more distance to cover with each stride.

D Train has plenty of speed though. Smaller target and a lower center of gravity makes him harder to catch.

Thompson led all 83 FBS backs with 20 or more receptions in yards after contact per reception (18.5) and forced missed tackles per reception (0.542).

Just like when I said Kareem Hunt would be better than fournette. Neither had played a game then either. IF I had said it 2 months ago, it would just be me saying something obvious.

Jesse"The Real Deal" Haynes is the RB patron saint false hope in the Marty era, and McCluster is Pioli's

I'm not getting hyped until I see it. There 's nothing wrong being excited, as

people go overboard believing that every draft pick or UDFA will be a pro bowler . I always pump the brakes due to being burnt before concerning unknown talent and what they can accomplish.

Thus, I'm a skeptic until the unproven player becomes a legitimate factor that helps the Chiefs win.

Nothing wrong with being skeptical early. Just don't go full retard like Clay did on his Hill hate. LMAO. That guy loves making a fool of himself on this board.

Somebody should make a thread-poll-thing about "Who's the #2 mostest important player on the Chiefs."

A couple of weeks ago, I reviewed all the games from last year and did so pretty carefully. I focused mainly on offensive line play this time around, but somewhere around game 5 or 6, it struck me that Kelce is the most important non-Mahomes player on our team.

Whenever we needed a first down or we were in a crucial situation, the ball typically went to either Tyreek or Kelce. Of the two, the most clutch seemed to be Kelce.

That, of course, is simply the eyeball test since I didn't chart anything. Nonetheless, I think it might make for interesting discussion because I'll bet a lot of people would vote for Hill ... or Hunt when he was still on the roster.

Ive had the games on a lot in the background since the season was over and I think you might be right.
Wonder where a guy could find the stats to see if true?

I didn't say that about every draft pick or UDFA. I said it about Darwin Thompson. Nor do I hold myself accountable for the mistaken predictions of others.

You can pump the brakes all you want. Just don't tell me what I can or can't predict. I find fun in trying to guess who will or won't be a productive player during the off-season, because there's nothing else to talk about. It's hardly devastating to me if I'm wrong. My ego isn't that fragile.

NFL social media had highlights of Darren Sproles for his birthday today.

I think the Sproles comp is really accurate. And if he is even 50% of Sproles, then holy fucking shit will this offense be even more insane (idk how that is possible).

10-15 pounds is pretty significant for a running back. Perhaps he's a new member of LOZ?

Interesting nugget from Darwin Thompson’s time with the media today:

He says he weighs 190 right now. He played at 200-205 in college. Yikes. Get back to 205 ASAP.

In reality, if he's going to be a shotgun back that really is more of a weapon in space with zone type carries and in the passing game being lighter isn't an issue.

He looked exactly as he projected...with similar characteristics as Hunt.

His stats said he was about as hard to initially tackle as Kareem...and it showed when he broke like 3 tackles.

He's going to be good in this offense....Sproles on steroids.

He's been getting rave reviews from his pergormances In camp so it was no surprise to see him show it on the field. I've said from day one I see something special In this kid and his impact on this offense will be like Tyreek's In the long term. I mean that TD he scored he straight juked the lb like a proper WR and took it to the bank. It's like Kareem and Tarik Cohan all wrapped up In one guy and that's frikking dangerous. Andy is gonna go bananas with this kid LOL.

duncan_idaho

If the pass pro he showed tonight is the norm, i think he gets featured in this offense. The initial burst and tackle-busting ability is top notch and adds a dimension to this offense.
