A thread to talk about some of the things we've bought and are really happy with. The end. Or the beginning.

I'll start with one of the more obvious ones that is probably shard with a number of people here.

https://www.weber.com/US/en/grills/gas-grills/genesis-ii-series/61011001.html

https://product-images.weber.com/Grill-Images/Gas/61011001C.png

I just hit the 10-year anniversary of purchasing my Weber Genesis E-310 gas grill. It's definitely not a cheap purchase, but man...this thing is a tank. I've had it for a decade, probably averaging use once every week or two, and it's held up like a champ. I've replaced the electric igniter button, but other than that, it's all original. Prior to this, I probably only had cheap grills last a few years each, and the cheap aluminum they're made out of made for lots of hot and cold spots that made cooking a good steak a giant pain in the ass.

In short, if you're in the market for a grill, and you can swing the money, do it. You won't regret it.

On the other end of the price spectrum, here's one I wouldn't have even known existed until I ran across it a few years ago.

I wear glasses, so in order for me to be able to read a clock at night, it has to be like 2 feet from my face. That's an option, but my wife and I got this gizmo a while back, and it's perfect. It projects a clock on your ceiling with numbers that are probably a foot tall. It's not that bright, so it isn't even visible during the day (though you can see the light if you walk right in front of the clock), and it's not distracting at all at night. But I can open my eyes and see the clock at a glance in the middle of the night.

Obviously it won't be a good fit for everyone, but if you wear glasses and find yourself squinting to read an alarm clock, check this thing out.

It's not a cheap option, but I also LOVE my Rachio sprinkler controller. Obviously that's only a fit if you have a sprinkler system, but having one that works on WiFi is a game changer. If you're out in the yard testing things out or blowing out your system, you can just turn on or off the zone you're working on using the app.

It also has modes where you can just tell it the features of each zone and tell it to take care of it from there. It'll dynamically adjust the days it waters and the timing based on the weather. Saves you water and is super simple.

https://www.rachio.com/

It's kind of like a Nest thermostat for your lawn. I have one of those too, but I wouldn't call the Nest a no-brainer purchase compared to some of the other stuff I've listed. It's good for sure, but not absolutely fantastic.

There is no excuse for as much silicone in your kitchenware as possible.

Such resilience, heat resistance and ease of cleaning.

I've put my spatulas and bakeware through things that would have nuked other materials.

Also, if you have the co-funds for compliant cookware, an induction stovetop is a godsend.

My Vizio TV. Had it for ten plus years and it is still going strong. Has one pixel that is diminished and that is it.

Also my car. 2007 Acura, I'll probably never buy a different make. Really good quality and never had any problems with it.

Yeah, my Dell XPS 13 is my most recent larger purchase... compared to the alienware, it is sooo much smaller, and still powerful enough to do software development on it when I travel.

Below is the XPS on top of the Alienware.. the block in the back is just the power block for the Alienware... I didn't realize it would be so big honestly...

The software is identical on all of them, so it's all just down to the under-the-hood specs.

The biggest things to look for are:

4K/UHD compatibility (if you have a TV that supports it)
Dual-Band WiFi (if you have the ability to do 5GHz from your router, that can help your signal consistency a lot)

A coffee table with a lift top. Perfect for meals or just whatever. This is the most convenient thing ever. I'm sure it was invented by some poor slob who spilled a meatball on the couch and got brained by his wife with skillet as soon as he got out of the hospital.

The only time we actually use the dining room table for meals is if we have company. Had it for 18 years and it's as sturdy as the day we got it.

I bought the 2018 HP Spectre x360 15.6" 2 in 1. Just a beautiful screen, and have had no issues with it at all. First HP I've bought in years.

Boxis shredder. It's a beast. Tears through loads of paper and have never had an issue with it. I bought others and they just never measured up to this one. Boxis Shredder (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074RNV6XL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

My iPhone X has been a great phone. I also have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ for work which is a beautiful phone. Great battery life. Rarely go under 80% battery even when I use it a lot.

My 2103 Camaro. Love this car. No problems at all until this past Sunday when my sons roommate backed into it. $2000 dollars damage. I guess it's time to trade it in after I get it fixed.

Yeah, well I like my Ryobi 40V battery-powered mower. :)

Obviously it's completely different, and I wouldn't necessarily call it a "favorite purchase," but not having to deal with gas and oil is a game changer for a small yard. It's also nice that the batteries are compatible with their other products (I have a trimmer as well).

I'm a big fan of magnetic phone mounts in the car. I personally have the one that you jam into your CD player (because who uses those anymore), which makes it rock solid. The caveat is that you pretty much have to be someone who uses an opaque phone case for it to work, but if you do it's super handy to just be able to plop the phone in the general direction of the mount and have it stick. Super easy to grab it for a phone call too.

Pair of 2002 Oakley Half-Jackets. Still wearing them today.

I don’t know what model they were, but I bought a pair of orange lens Oakley’s with one of my first pay checks in high school and I graduated in 99. I finally had to throw them away last year, they just pretty much started dissolving from all the years of sweat. I have 2 newer pair of Oakley’s and the rubber pieces on them are already starting to deteriorate. But I wouldn’t have any other brand.

Was actually just checking consumer reports recently looking for a new gas grill and these were highly rated. Only question I couldn’t figure out is whether it could get hot enough to sear the shit out of a steak.

Mine usually tops out at maybe 475 degrees or so. It does fine enough for my purposes, but I'm not that picky.

Big thumbs up from me as well. I read up on them and so glad I upgraded to it when I had my sprinklers installed.

I've tried all sorts of brew methods and types of coffees and coffee shops. If I see something at Costco that I haven't tried I always get it to try it. Cold brew, k cups, french press, regular brew, single cup brew. It's all kind of the same to me. I dunno. Maybe my pallet sucks.

How is it for stomach sleepers? Does the velcro have any tendency to make noise when you move around on your pillow?

its the dumb things like that make sleep masks so hard for me. None of them seem to work well for stomach sleepers.

One of the first things I've been doing in the new house is updating all the old toggle style light switches with Decoras, and have been replacing a lot of light fixtures and worn outlets as well, and my Klein circuit breaker finder has been indispensable. Plug the transmitter into any outlet or light fixture, and it will locate the corresponding breaker.

https://www.kleintools.com/catalog/electrical-testers/digital-circuit-breaker-finder

Shortly after we moved into our old house nearly 20 years ago, my mother in law stopped by after she was at the home show and dropped off some paperwork about a ladder she had bought for me called a Little Giant. I looked it over and thought "oh god, how much did she waste on this gimmicky POS?"

Well, not a cent, as that ladder has been incredible. It's fully adjustable, you can offset it to use in a stairway, it has a work platform, and is sturdy as hell. They've cheapened them up a bit over the years, but mostly to make them lighter as mine is quite heavy.

https://www.littlegiantladder.com/

Another purchase for the new home was this Samsung gas range. It was the wife's choice and so far it has exceeded her expectations. I've never used it, but hey, if she's happy, I'm happy

I'm a side/stomach sleeper. I can count on one hand the times the mask moved and let light in, and it was usually because I didn't have it tight enough. And I never hear it on my pillow; the Velcro faces your head and never rubs the pillow.

All this talk about coffee. I paid a good price for some brand that was supposed to have an insane amount of caffeine in it. I can’t remember the name but I had to order it off a website. I took the bag to work and we all drank it like crackheads waiting on a rock. It didn’t do shit. It tasted like normal coffee and had no affect at all caffeine wise.

I struggled for a while trying to find a new pillow that I liked. I had some super old down feather pillows that I’d had forever. I kept buying pillows and they just couldn’t replace my old ones. Then I broke down and ordered a My Pillow one night. I fell in love with it. But then I went and bought a new mattress at Mattress Firm and it came with 2 free pillows. I told the salesman, oh I have a My Pillow, I don’t need those. He said you’ll throw that My Pillow away after sleeping on these. It’s some kinda memory foam or something but one side of it stays cool all the time. He told me he doesn’t put a pillow case on it because it takes away some of the cooling effect. I’m even more impressed with them, and I don’t even know where My Pillow is anymore. They don’t have a brand on them, I just know they came from Mattress Firm

Went Grizzly. Pretty happy.

Thought about going to Sawstop job site saws for work but my employees don’t know how to store tools for travel and would destroy them. I might get one for myself but I can’t trust 4K worth of saws to idiots. Dewalt 745s for now.

I bought one of these back in 2014 to strap down to the back of the ATV. The hard coolers were a pain in the ass because they slid around to much. These things keep beverages extra cold and are easy to secure with a couple of bungee cords. They are also tougher than hell. I had the bungee's come lose and the thing got drug about half a mile across a boulder field. The thing has some battle scars, but other than that, it was fine. It was full when that happened, so it had some weight to it as well. My brother was behind me and couldn't catch me until I stopped, but said it bouncing 6 feet in the air, every time it hit a rock. Yeah, test passed.

Mine has a sear station, easily hits 700. Turn on all the burners to Max and keep the lid closed, do your searing, then turn it back down

I've been thinking about getting a new grill. I'll have to dig into this one.

There are times I have taken good care of it and times I have abused it, but it has held up well. Basic but gets the job done.

These are purchases I've made over the last couple of years that I am really happy with. It's not necessarily "OMG! Bestest Evar!!!" stuff.

I use a CPAP and it works best to sleep on my side because of it (if I sleep on my back, I stuff up and can't breathe, for some reason). However, I also have arthritis in both shoulders and the pain from the pressure on my shoulder would wake my up at night.

I ended up getting a Medcline pillow and it's been a lifesaver. It takes all pressure off the shoulder and also makes it easier to keep the mask on at night, too. It took a little to get used to it but I couldn't be happier with it.

https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-gc1huok/images/stencil/1024x1024/products/84/517/David-51-cropped__82060.1510267561.jpg?c=2

Because the pillow is pretty massive and we were due a new mattress anyway, we then upgraded to a king sized mattress. We needed a new bed frame because of the change of size but didn't like any of the frames the local store had. I found a basic frame that we liked on Wayfair (we live in an old farm house and kind of decorate for that) so ordered it. I wasn't expecting much for 169 bucks but it is really solid and nicely made. My only quibble is that the bolt heads are chrome instead of white but I really don't notice anymore.

Part two because the other was getting long:

I picked up a small Farberware air fryer for like $30 a couple of years back. It makes amazing fries and O'brien hash browns and does a nice job if I am just browning up a chicken or burger patty or something like that. i use it all the time.

Also picked up a 6 quart Instant Pot last Black Friday. I have used a stove top pressure cooker for quite a while but the IP is really nice in that you don't have to babysit it like the stove top version.

Also last Black Friday, I picked up a Benq 4K digital projector that I absolutely love. We've had a 50" Samsung plasma TV forever and it is still going strong but I felt it was too small for movies. The wife didn't want to watch regular TV on a bigger TV so this was the compromise. It definitely adds a more movie theater type experience to movies now. With the screen I had, it is basically like having an 85" TV.

Lastly (for now), in early 2017 we bought a left over 2016 Kia Optima with the 1.6L turbo motor. With my kids and parents now spread all over the western US, we are doing more road trips and wanted something quieter and with better mileage than my Subaru. I love this car and couldn't be happier with it. It is quiet, comfortable, roomy and gets 38-40 mpg but still has plenty of power to pass, etc. Plus we picked it up brand new for $20K.

In terms of necessities:

Duck tape

WD-40

My Tacoma

Nest thermostat; being able to do everything from my phone is a godsend. Installed two in my parent's house so now when my mom calls and wants the A/C on or whatever, I just do whatever on my phone, instead of having to drive over and deal with it.

In terms of stuff I just like a lot:

My Hennessy Hammock. Most comfortable way to sleep in the woods ever.

My frameless pontoon for fishing.

My Dillon reloader. No more separate steps for weighing charges, priming cases, etc. Just pull the handle and keep everything loaded up. For pistol cartridges anyway.

My stupid Instant Pot. Thing is great. Especially the pressure cook feature. If you screw up, no problem, throw everything in there and set it. About an hour later, dinner's ready. Eat, toss pot into the dishwasher and done.

This thing is awesome for under $20. Really great design. It folds completely flat for storage and is height adjustable. The top can be flat (TV tray) or angled for a laptop (has a lip). Legs can fit underneath a couch. Turn it sideways and use it as a bed tray. Like most of the people...I bought one then bought more. 5 star product. Build quality feels like is should be $50+.

My Black Widow Graybark custom takedown recurve. Ordered it from Ken Beck in the 80s after I had been promoted to Crew Chief hefty raise and furnished work truck so didnt have to many expenses. I had it made to 78 lbs at 29 " my draw length because I was young and thought I was a he man. In 2000s I payed Ken beck another visit and ordered lighter limbs 58 lbs at 29". Ken was handing down business and remaining spokesman so I want it done while he was still hands on. Love this bow I started with an Old Ben Pearson Recurve as a nipper then to Fred Bear recurve. I experimented with a Jennings compound bow for about a year but that wasnt for me. I have fiddled with bow making with a recurve and longbow some osage self bows but the widow is for meat in the freezer.

Not my bow but similar but newer model directly from the manufacturers website. I like the picture.

50th Anniversary Camaro, the window sticker was $39,500 I bought it six months old with 1700 miles for $29,900. I love leather interior and it has a special gray and black leather with 50th markings. They only came in one color, Nightfall Gray Metallic and they only made 5700 of all the engines combined. Mine was the lowest, 275 HP turbo which was suppose to do 0-60 in 5.6 sec and it would put you back in your seat. It had special wheels, markings, badges, floormats, headrests, etc. We had one fellow in the club who had bought one with something like 655 HP and he paid about $60K for it, everything else was the same.

I'm a big fan of this universal remote if you want to control multiple devices but don't want to shell out the money for a Harmony.

Inteset 4-in-1 Universal Backlit IR Learning Remote for use with Apple TV, Xbox One, Roku, Media Center/Kodi, Nvidia Shield, most Streamers and other A/V Devices https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M4I1BAY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RMw6CbJVXV9PQ

You can program any button to do anything by having it "learn" from your existing remotes, so it can basically replace anything. And it can do programmable macros as well. I have mine set up with my Roku, TV, and sound bar to turn them all on and off at once. It's probably not worth buying if you already have a universal remote that came with your cable box or whatever, but it's nice to have something that is completely flexible.

Who knows? Old people get cranky about things the rest of us don't even think about.

I think Nimoy truly loved Shatner for the majority of their friendship, but we all know Bill was a bit of a narcissist. Maybe, in his old, age, Leonard just got a bit too cranky to tolerate that as long as he had before, and so enough was enough.

People fall in and out of love and friendships come and go. I'm glad Bill wrote the book so the fans can remember the good times and give us a little insight into two lives defined by a franchise.

This is a pretty cool thread. Interesting to see what excites people

I bought a backpack at WalMart when I was in Philly a month ago because Spirit Airlines wanted to charge me $47 and $42 for EACH leg of my Philly-Dallas-Phoenix flight. I bought a backpack for $17 and stuffed my entire carry on in it. It weighed 16.5 pounds! Made it on the flight and paid ZERO for a carry on. Can't find a photo online.

I searched for this before I posted because I was almost certain I wouldn't be first to the table here.

My Blackstone is easily the best purchase I have made in recent memory. And I stole mine due to a sale, floor item and cash coupon (about $175 for the 36'' model).

Since I've bought mine, 3 people that I've cooked with have bought one of their own.

Seriously - everyone should buy a Blackstone. They're just outstanding.

I have just enough gadgets that my wife thought were stupid when I bought them that work all the time that I pretty much have a free "well that was a stupid purchase" to work with.

The damn fajitas or cheesesteaks you can make on that thing are incredible, ESPECIALLY when you introduce the Joule. I marinade sirloin (god's punishment for giving us ribeyes) and then cook it at 126 in the joule for about 4 hours. It comes out incredibly tender and flavorful. Then get my surface temp to about 500 and drop a bacon press on top of the steak to get an incredible sear.

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/picture.php?albumid=106&pictureid=1895

That was my spread last night.

It's the only way I can come up with to get you a perfect medium rare, AND a great sear AND a tender, flavorful cut from an otherwise lousy cut of meat.

Oh - and side note while we're talking about best purchases - find the Tortilla Land raw tortillas next time you're doing fajitas. They're uncooked but pressed and you can get 10 of them on the 36'' at a time. They are amazing and take the fajitas up to restaurant quality. You can't duplicate that with some Mission shelf-stable jobs.

Mine went away on their own after a couple of years. I think the mind gets use to it and just blocks them out. I had them the worst about five years ago when I was playing SS in softball and the floater moved to the front and was in the middle, so I had to look at the batter out of the side of my eye.

I was skeptical, but this stuff actually works like a champ. I had mold and mildew on the north side of my house (no sunlight obviously) and tried everything to get rid of it. A couple of applications and my siding was back to normal. No harmful chemicals either. Just put it in a pressurized sprayer and go to town.

The cheese, dough and toppings are easy. There's no good pizza in Durango (at least after being raised on the east coast) and I can make wayyyyyyy better pizza at home than anything I can find here. It's almost embarrassing how bad the pizza is here.

Here too. But if you have to take them on and off a billion times a day it’s not great but frankly I can’t think of an easier solution. They slide on and off, have an aggressive toe catch so you can do it with your hands full, and are light in the top so they don’t tip over.

I have had maybe 6-7 different home theater speaker set-ups. I put this one together on a whim...basically because I liked the aesthetic of the speaker design. These things are amazing. Mirage Omni-Stats....

They won most innovative speakers in 2002?...and were like $1700 for a set. I piecemealed a 5.1 for around $200 off Ebay....

I can literally go to my kitchen and still clearly hear it ...like it transcends space. These are some special speakers...completely immersive and invisible. It's really bizarre....

One of the best things I've ever bought.....used with a Marantz amplifier.

Me and the Mrs have this exact same grill (purchased 2 years ago)...we can confirm that it is great!

1. Cool Touch damper handles for my WSM and Webber kettle. Cheap, easy to put on, and make damper adjustment way easier

2. Stihl Chainsaw. 18 years of abuse and still goin strong and I use it all year.

3. Frog Toggs raingear. Shit just keeps me dry

4. Buck knife on my keychain. I use it everyday for about everything. Been there 20 years

5. Tilley hat. Bought it in 1997. It's flown off my head out of boats many times, but it floats. It's got a small pouch for money or a fishing license, etc. Best hats ever.

This might be as good of a place to ask as any.

I'm looking for a recommendation on a decent backpack. We're headed to Disney this year and want to be able to take a few things (snacks/water/camera/etc) in with us. Preferably lightweight and waterproof.

Anyone have a suggestion?

My firm recently presented all staff members with Kenneth Cole Reaction backpacks. I wear a backpack daily as part of my commute, and over the years generally just picked up whatever the cheapest Walmart/Target special was. I was amazed how much more comfortable this was than others I've used. Light weight, but sturdy.

No idea if it's waterproof or not, though.

+1 for Sonicare from me. I wouldn't have thought of mentioning that one, but I used to be a cavity per year kind of guy, and since buying a Sonicare brush 5 or so years ago, I haven't had a single one.

+2.
Sonic brush + WaterPik = best start and end of every day.

Apocalypse Gear winter parka. Built for Yukon Quest sled dog race, it’s tough as nails, quite warm and slides on easily over other layers. akgear.com

Anything by Simms for fishing. Great gore Tex jacket and breathable waders. Had my waders for over 10 years. Still no leaks.

Wolf 36” stove. Wish I had room for the 48” but the heat control is fantastic. Expensive install up front but worth every penny.

Sagebrush dry dry gear backpack. Made in Southeast Alaska,it’s kept my gear dry through many storms, in Alaska, Belize and elsewhere. If I’m getting into a boat, I throw extra gear (jackets, layers, etc.) into my sagebrush dry pack.

Pelican cases. Similar to sagebrush dry. Absolutely waterproof, crush proof and floatable, I use this for wallets, keys, cell phones. Buy one and it lasts forever.

I’m sure I’ll think of others but those are a good starting point.

I use the standard Aquarius model. My dental hygienist likes the cordless one but corded is just fine for me. You have to work your way up to the 10 level but your gums will thank you for it. My routine is brush, water pik, mouthwash (Listerine cool mint). Might sound like overkill but it only takes five minutes start to finish and my dental health game is on point.

Sounds like some nice gear. It's funny the difference between what you need there in below-zero plus wind chill and what I need living in Arizona in 110 degrees plus sun light exposure. Left outside in it we'd likely both die if we were wearing each other's gear.

I use a Waterpik as well, though cordless, without the water tank, and it only has 2 settings. I should've listed it just due to the fact, like you said, level one was like getting my gums tattooed on in the beginning and now the higher level feels like a thorough rinse.

We probably would die in each other’s gear but the waders wouldn’t kill you if you need them for streams up in northern AZ. Simms are used throughout the west, including CO and UT. If I’m fishing in AK I just add lots of under layers, which would kill anyone in AZ when it’s 110. I can’t imagine how hot that would make someone in your climate.

Took DaFace's recommendation and bouth a Weber Gs4 last year. It's held up perfectly. I use the charcoal when i've spent some coin on some steaks or prime rib or something, but the gas is nice and easy for those nights we're doing burgers or chicken or something.
