View Full Version : Chiefs I'm going to just say it. The "Chiefs Kingdom" marketing has got to go.

Been a Chiefs for 30+ years. Was it about 10 years ago when this whole Chiefs Kingdom garbage started to come around? Wouldn't we make fun of the Broncos fans if they called themselves the Broncos Kingdom? Are we the Disney Princesses of the NFL? This has got to be the goofiest marketing campaign in the history of the NFL. I cringe every time an NFL announcer referes to us as the "Chiefs Kingdom" on a nationally televised game. Did some 65 year old marketing manager come up with this? I could come up with 100+ better names than "The Chiefs Kingdom". War Party, Legion of Shroom, or maybe even Thomas the Train Railroad Company to name a few. Am I the only one who feels this way? Maybe even just refer to us as Chiefs Fans but this whole Chiefs Kingdom thing is just stupid. Did we build a castle like Disney World and I just missed it?

I hate it. It's just a non-imaginative ripoff of marketing schticks that other teams have, and it's embarrassing that their marketing department can't do better.

I am extremely personally embarrassed at how my team is represented nationally. It causes me the greatest distress and anxiety. I always worry about what rival fans think of the name “Chiefs Kingdom” even after we rout them by 35 points, the name still causes me the greatest shame.

Lol, who cares?

If you let poor branding slide without demanding excellence, then at some point the Chiefs will have Nike design cheap, bland uniforms like the ones they did for Denver. And they'll move the team to some soccer stadium like the Chargers did. And they'll have no credibility in the league, which means they'll have to hire and draft based on television coverage like the Raiders do.

Because when you beat somebody down by 30 points and the announcer says "Chiefs Kingdom" that immediately takes 10 points off the board.

KC Wolf looks more like a racoon than a rat or a wolf. I'm OK with him. It's an homage to the old "Wolf Pack" section of Municipal Stadium in the AFL days. In the Late 1970s, the Chiefs had this stupid mascot that looked like something you'd see at Worlds of Fun. It was a big stupid cartoon Indian. We called it "The Big Papoose" and would heckle it mercilessly. So if you think KC Wolf is bad....

I guess the "Kingdom" moniker is OK with me, although I'm not big on monarchy. We have a Chiefs "Kingdom" and a "Royals" baseball team. Hell, the Royals SHOULD have been named the Monarchs, anyway. "Royals" is like a Pat Boone cover for "Monarchs."

Kingdom always makes me think of that scene in Monty Python's Holy Grail when the king first meets some of his subjects:

Chiefs Army or Chiefs Band would be better than Chiefs Kingdom. First off, the Chief they are named after didn't have a kingdom. Second, since they are now represented by Native American sympbols, and since Native Americans had Bands and Tribes, and not Kingdoms, it is stupid.

I've thought "Chiefs Kingdom" was pretty fucking stupid since I first heard it mentioned.

Royals would have a Kingdom

Indian Chiefs wouldn't have a kingdom

No Indian Chiefs wouldn't have a kingdom. But the second they said "Chiefs Nation" the Kansas City Chiefs would have a lawsuit.

htismaqe

Exactly. I think Chiefs Kingdom is dumb too but it's not like they can use anything native american related without being labeled insensitive racists.

Yep.

All natives weren't nomads dude...

The Aztecs and Incas didn't have "chiefs" therefore they're not really relevant to the discussion.

It's pretty obvious where the name "Chiefs" came from and it's also pretty obvious that Native Americans in this country don't like it.

I kind of like ChiefsKingdom because I'm a huge fan of Indigenous Peoples combined with Feudalism. Purely from a socioeconomic perspective, the two go together well.

But based on how the past 5 decades have gone, I'm more inclined to go with Chiefs Torture Chamber.

It's a subtle way to try to encourage the fandom not to refer to itself as "Chiefs Nation."

Which is sad because "Nation" is much better and far more fitting.

Well, Chief Nation would be most fitting of an organization named "Chiefs" that is represented by an arrowhead to be sure. Unfortunately the raiders grabbed that one first. I'd have to go with tribe. "C'mon out to arrowhead all you rabid members of the Chiefs Tribe!" That sort of thing. Otherwise, just call us all Chiefs fans

By the way ...

I've loved this team my entire life and I've never figured out what "wolves" have to do with the Chiefs. The beautiful and witty Mrs. FAX has asked me this several times and I've had no answer (I've made up a few, but they were blatant lies).

I would appreciate knowing what in the name of God's Skillet-Fried Green Beans is the connection. I know for certain that "Dancing With Wolves" came out well after the wolf thing emerged (one of my best lies, right there).

It goes back to municipal stadium. There was one particular section that was louder and more rowdy than all others and someone on the Chiefs sideline commented that they sounded like a pack of wolves.

Lucky for us they didn't sound like a flock of screeching bare-throated bellbirds. The Great Spirit was smiling on us that day.

I wonder if Chiefs Kingdom was an attempt to start transitioning fans away from the name of Chiefs and toward the Kansas City Kings.

At the very least, Kingdom kind of balances out the Nativd American connotations.

Well maybe the worst case scenario is that we change the arrowhead to a police badge and still call ourselves the Chiefs. Everybody can dress up like cops, have fantastic mustaches, wear cop glasses and our mascot could be Rod Farva. We could call the fan base The Law, The Jurisdiction or The General Vicinity. This is still strictly a plan Z scenario though.

I guarantee that the marketing department considered how to lessen the Native American impact of the word Chiefs when they started playing with the Chiefs Kingdom slogan. The Kingdom has European and feudal connotations instead of tribal, so it helps to soften the cultural appropriation protest.

I'm still astounded that the Washington Redkins have managed to keep their mascot.
