Shutting down soon, be closed for a year with a major facelift!
https://www.kcur.org/post/truman-library-and-museum-closing-yearlong-25-million-expansion-and-renovation#stream/0

The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence will shut its doors on July 23 and remain closed for approximately one year while it undergoes a multimillion-dollar expansion and renovation. Its last day open to the public will be July 22.

Library Director Kurt Graham said the project would create "a more 21st-century offering" that would make the museum "more of a destination" and help meet its core purpose, which is education.

"More people in the community and more people from beyond the community will come and enjoy learning about this legacy and this incredible story of a guy who comes literally from nowhere: A farmer from Missouri rises to be the most powerful man in the world," he said.

"That will likely never happen again," Graham added. "We will never see another Harry Truman.”

To date, the Truman Library Institute has raised $23 million of a $25 million funding campaign, the institute said in a news release. Most of that — $22 million — will go toward the expansion and other renovations including a new entrance and lobby, a larger store and expanded exhibition galleries. The 3,000-square foot addition will also include a private event venue spaces for offices, archives, storage and mechanical purposes.

That leaves $3 million for educational and public programs and the library’s endowment, which will each receive $1 million.

The state of Missouri gave a $3-million appropriation to the library for the project.

"It's just an incredible vote of confidence," Graham said. "This is Missouri’s only president and we’re just so delighted that the state is coming in to help fund a look at his legacy, because it's not just for Independence or just for Kansas City, it's for all Missourians to feel proud of the fact that 'Give-'Em-Hell' Harry came from right here."

This is a relief. Based on the headline, I thought maybe they were switching to cover the Kardashians or something.

I almost died at the Truman library. Hit a light pole sledding full speed on my back, head first.

I remember getting on my knees immediately afterwards. But the wind was completely knocked out of me and I couldn't breathe. Then everything went dark. Apparently I was passed out in the snow for 5 minutes.

No cel phones, my friend had to run a mile to my house to get my Mom. Or maybe he found a phone and called. At least we could remember each other's phone numbers back then.

Presidents will be elected for looks & social graces in the future. They will be no more relevant than a queen or their own vp

I watched from the other side of the street when President Nixon came to give Truman’s widow condolences when Harry died.

When Harry died in 1972 it was in December. My dad took me and we got in the reviewing line to see him lying in state in the Truman Library. We stood in line for hours, but I'm glad we went. My dad loved Truman. When he got drafted in 1951, he said "I went, because when the POTUS is from your home town, and sends you an invitation, you don't say no." When the funeral was on TV, they had a 21 gun Howitzer salute out on the front lawn. We could hear the percussive echo from the front porch of our house two miles away.

My Grandfather almost ran Truman over on his Indian Scout motorcycle in the 50's. True Story.

My dad met him when he was a bus boy at Stevenson's Restaurant in the 60's. Also a True Story.

Why are we still spending money on libraries? Who goes to a library anymore to check out books. I realize there are computers and other things, but you can just get all that information just as easily at home.

They just made a big one here in West Shawnee that looks like it costs 5 million dollars.

And what's the deal with those long sticks they keep the newspapers on? I read that Truman himself threaded those things at his library before he died.

Somebody hasn’t been to a presidential library.

Fair enough. Didn't know it was like a museum.

Nonetheless - lots of municipalities are still spending bank on libraries and it's pointless.

Truman was an average President and a lousy businessman, but his library is pretty cool.

They are currently doing this to the Eisenhower Library in Abilene. New exhibits will open in late July and features interactive and new technology to hear Ike and Mamies story "in their own words". The Eisenhower and Truman Libraries were staples of grade school field trips.

Nothing in this statement is true. Libraries are vital to the community. They do far more than loan out books.

Beginning Friday July 2, 2021...

After two years of being closed the Harry S Truman library is finally opening after a complete renovation. If one is in the area they should stop by and take a look at this time in our history to relive the era of a key president in America.

Note that visitors are now required to purchase timed entry tickets online in advance of their visit.

When the Navy guys jump, you can see the Missouri River winding up to the North. The Football and Baseball fields you see are William Chrisman HS. The road intersection interchange is US 24 Highway and Delaware St, that leads up to Harry Truman's Home to the South. That south lawn sits between US 24 highway and the south facing front of the Library, behind the windows is where the Thomas Hart Benton mural is. Amazing how accurate those guys are to hit a spot like that.
