Kinda sorta came up in the BP thread, and I was just curious what other people set their thermostats to. So, what's your thermostat set to?

(Also feel free to use the thread to discuss things like programmable thermostats and such since that's closely related.)

72 right now....I wish I could run it lower but I don't want some stupid ass bill, I also have a window unit in my loft that helps keep the temp down, my basement stays super chill though it's 62 down there.

In the winter my heat runs on 65.

71 all year long.

Electric bill in the winter is about $220. Electric bill in the summer is $500.

1.5 year old HVAC system. 17 year old house.

The only AC I have is a small portable unit we keep upstairs that only gets used when we have company.

Otherwise it is windows open and ceiling fans on.

As for heat... no idea what this house requires yet but I typically keep it 68 to 70 in the winter.

I’ve always wondered how the Nest would “learn” what temp is right for a household when there is so much variation between people living in the same house. Does it just randomly vary the temp from one extreme to the other so each person is happy/unhappy an equal amount. If the time? Or does it pick a temp in the middle of the two?

You are crazy, there ain't no way I'm sitting around in 100 degree heat with no AC.

I've taken to jumping into a cold shower to cool off a couple of times a day but I spend a good chunk of my day outside so I'm gonna be warm and sweaty regardless. If it gets too hot I go take a cold shower and relax until the heat of the day passes, then return outside to finish whatever I was doing. A benefit of homesteading though.

It just learns the pattern based on when you set it and when you're home. It works better when you disable that lame crap and just build your own schedule.

I’m climatized to the government settings. 78 summer 68 winter. Of course the wife who doesn’t pay the bill constantly adjusts the thermostat. Which I never understand. If your cold put on clothing and head gear. If your hot go outside and mow, I bet your think it’s nice and cool in here after that.

68 in the winter and at least 80 in the summer.

I don't like the cold, except for overnight, but a sweatshirt is generally fine.

I love the dry heat, and with ceiling fans, I generally won't even notice it's getting warm inside until it's at least 82, if not a few degrees warmer.

In KC, I'd try for 80 in the summer, but it tended to and around 76-78 during the worst heat/humidity of the summer.

We keep ours at 72 in the summer but periodically change it to 74 when the wife gets cold. We have a Nest thermostat so when we are gone it recognizes that and raises it to 76. Same sort of deal in the winter except it lowers the temperature when we are gone to 68 degrees.

This is the THIRD house I've lived in where I've paid the utilities.

First house after college in Shawnee, and it was a HUGE house and older. Was $380 - $400 in summers back in 2007 or 2008.

Second house Olathe, built in 1988. 4 bedroom. Same thing. Put in a new HVAC there, nothing changed.

Third house, Shawnee, built 17 years ago. Same thing, Last months bill was $433. I'm sure this month it will be about $480 since it was so hot. Put in a new HVAC system last year, nothing changed.

No fucks given on my end. It’s auto debited and most months I just check to be sure it’s not out of line and toss that bitch. I couldn’t tell you what the number was, just a ballpark. The incremental cost of a couple degrees certainly isn’t enough to suffer on my end. I literally cannot stand just sitting around sweating and I can’t fucking sleep if it’s very hot. Apparently I burn hotter than most folks. So I just don’t do it. I’ve done it. It sucked I kicked down the thermostat and that sucked less than being hot. So that’s what I do.

Fortunately my house has 2 units and Andersen windows, all but like 4 of which don’t even open so it’s pretty tight.

I also live in the desert and don’t have to dehumidify.

I don't really know. My wife does all of the furnace setting and I just deal with it. I think she was turning up the furnace up to 70 last winter. We don't have central air conditioning.

We got ductless minisplits last year, so they add heat and cooling in different zones of the house. I was living the big life last winter. I'd close the doors to my TV room and crank it up to 73, feeling good that I was only overheating 200 square feet.

I'm doing the same thing in the summer now, cranking up the air in the TV room (which is where I spend 75 percent of my waking time at home). I'm not sure if the thermostat is working, though, because I'll set it at 72 and it's still freezing my toes off. It seems almost like it's just working on an off/on switch and keeps running until I turn it off.

We're at 66-68 day/61-62 at night in winter, backed up by a couple of small space heaters but we try to keep use of them to a minimum.

We have an old/inefficient/too small central AC, so it doesn't matter where we set it on a hot day, it's gonna be 80-84 in here. I love those days when we can throw open the windows and turn on the fans.

I used to keep my A/C at 78, but I put a new unit in last year. It's super efficient, so now I run it at 76 and it's still cheaper than it ever was before. I don't really want it any cooler than 76. I am perfectly comfortable at that temp. In the winter, I run it at 72. My unit isn't nearly as efficient in the winter though. It's a heat pump (air source, not ground), and it doesn't do well in cold weather. I try to use my infrared space heaters as much as possible, otherwise, my electric bill will shoot up over $300 in the winter. I keep it under $150 the rest of the year.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I have an Ecobee thermostat and I love it. If I'm going to be out of town for a week or so, I set it to not run anymore than absolutely necessary while I'm gone. Then, the day I'm coming home, I get on my phone and return it to normal setting. I get home, and the house is how I like it.

I'm not home during the hottest part of the day, and I run a fan in whatever room I am in during the summer so it *feels* a lot cooler than 80 degrees. Any cooler in the summer with the fan, and I start to get chilly. It is odd, because at work, 74-76 degrees definitely feels hot.....

haven’t turned mine on yet. I’m never home during the day and at night it’s been in the 50s so I just leave the windows open.

I used to leave the bedroom windows open year around at night. Lows in the 60s in summer and 40s in winter.

But I started sleeping better after I closed it. Never thought as my neighborhood being loud but I guess it was.

I have a minisplit in the bedroom. It gets set to 64 at night because that is all the lower the thermostat goes.
