Been looking for a car came to the conclusion the Kia Optima is it. Looks nice and is affordable. I drive about 30 miles to and from work gets a good mpg on the highway.

I do!

A 2016 LX 1.6T. It has the 1.6L turbo in it, which is more powerful and gets better mileage than the 2.4L in the car in the link. Mine isn't as fancy as that one but has everything that I wanted in it.

The car is quiet, comfortable and I average 39 mpg in mixed rural driving. It has plenty of power for passing or whatnot. It's been trouble-free though I only have 13,000 miles so far so that is to be expected. I paid $20,000 (sticker was $26,500) in early 2017 for it and have zero regrets.

One thing to consider, Billay, is that the 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty does not transfer from the original owner so you will only have the remainder of the 5 year, 50,000 mile B2B warranty.

To be honest, if I were you, I would spend an extra $2000 and buy one of the new 2019 Optima LXs that they are advertising for $20K. You won't have leather and a sunroof but they are still nicely appointed and you'll get the full warranty. The new ones also now have Apple Carplay and Android Auto built in which the '16s did not. You'll also get a better rate and term on the financing.

You might also consider a Forte. They are a little smaller than the Optima but not by much and are in no way a penalty box. The Kia site is advertising a 2019 Forte S with a sunroof for $18,550 brand new.

Just throwing that out there.

Kias don't have a CVT. It's either a regular six speed auto or seven speed DCT auto.

I actually wish I had just burned the existing farmhouse to the ground and put in a nice manufactured home instead of going through the last 20 years of rebuilding and remodeling the existing house. Looking at having to completely re-side it in a year or two after the kids are out of college. Should have gone for a small house and huge shop/garage instead of the big ass house that my wife and I will be rattling around in a couple of years. :D

Some years had engine issues but I think they are much older than what you are looking for.

When they started building the Theta engines (the 2.4L and one of the 2.0L) in America, they had some casting problems that left metal shavings in the block. Eventually it would grenade the engine. Hyundai/Kia replaced the engines and extended the powertrain warranty even to owners who bought them used. I believe it only affected the engines from 2011-2014.

Do you remember how much you paid for it? I have this idea I could get one for around 350 or less a month.

We bought our 2011 Optima EX in 2013. It had 22k miles and we paid around 19k, if memory serves. Still driving it today. Wife loves it. Leather, heated/cooled seats, moon roof (or panoramic I think is what some call it). It gets pretty good gas mileage (33mpg hwy). Good get up and go. Also has good handling so you can have a little fun with it.

And when we got it, I liked the styling much better than many other sedan type cars. I read that the designer for Audi had joined Kia and that was his first design with them. I now see that other manufacturers have tried to copy some of that styling over the last few years.

One issue that I found out about recently was a manufacturing flaw involving the engine

Kia is recalling the 2011 -14 Optima; 2012 – 14 Sorento and the 2011 – 13 Sportage.

This, of course, ended up affecting my 2011.

The problem is that metal debris wasn’t removed from the engine during manufacturing and that debris can clog oil passages, leading to engine failure.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/jensen/2017/04/07/after-years-of-owner-anger-and-a-class-action-kia-recalls-faulty-engines/#12b635284cb7

Briggs Kia in Topeka did replace the engine last fall/winter when it suddenly started acting up. I realize that all manufacturers have their screwups from time to time but this one was a pretty major one. At least they finally did the right thing.

It probably has something to do with repairs : the 10 yr/100,000 mi Powertrain Warranty is only valid for the original owner.

A (gently) used 2017 Optima can still fetch $12/$14k on resell. It just doesn't have that Powertrain warrany

I'm lost on that concept, when we buy cars it's for "a long time", not the resale. So we're still driving the 2006 Sorento, and even the 2002 Silverado (now that it's fixed), and this older son is still driving his 2006 Taurus, and the new 2017 Sierra, I hope, will be around in 2030+.

Hell, if you aren't a every-two-years car swapper, having a car that depreciates help on taxes....

And yeah, what I don't spend in recurring $500 a month car payments I spend in SCUBA gear. It's just wants and priorities man...

We bought 3 KIA Fortes for our Driver Education program in 2016. They've been the best cars we ever bought; none of our instructors want to drive the others anymore. Very reliable, nice ride, well equipped, good gas mileage--great value, even if we'd paid full price for them (we bought them hail-damaged for about a $3K discount.) Lots of bang for the buck. I'm going to buy one or two of them at a heavy discount once we are ready to move on in a couple of years. I'm all about value, and drive it till it dies...still driving 3 great older cars. I hate car payments. The KIAs fit that profile.
