Since the 16 game schedule came out the lowest amount of punts in a season was 43
2007 - 44
2015 - 56
2016 - 49
2017- 53
2018- 43

From 2015-2018 only once did it hit triple digits
25 of 32 teams had a 50% success rate or better on 4th downs last season going for it.
With the way the league calls defensive penalties, the way the yardage on those plays for calls is appointed,

.... then consider the chances of our players getting open could we come close to that 43 mark?
What would be your min/max for distance and field position to go for it?

I thnk if you got behind the count with an offensive penalty and you are 4th and 15 or less go for it from the oppositions 40. Beyond the 40 and distance over 15 I think it would obviously be game circumstances.

Good thing for us we don't have to worry about 4th down

Kinda true haha,
However I had worked out on FGs, Punts and INTs that we left 86 TDs on the field.
Just think about converting 25% of those

On a minor historical note, the Chiefs only played nine games in 1982 due to a player's strike. Ramping 23 punts up to a 16 game season would mean that they were on pace for 41, which is still really low, but not as low as 23.

Thanks for the correction, I should have known that.
The Chargers were the team to do it, so yeah Im guessing the season would have ended up higher for them

Interesting.

Wonder what was the average yardage-per-attempt per 4th down

I wouldn't have a problem going for it if we're at least on our own 45 and within 6 yards every single time.

Edited to make up for the error

The reason I went 15 yards was I think with the new challenges to PI calls that the refs will be calling even more of them, vs holding calls.

Speaking of 4th downs. What are we going to do with Colquitt this year? He's going to be a high priced spectator.

He deserves to have a nice little break. After being the MVP for several years he now gets to sit and watch one of the best offenses of all time

He is one player that we take the cap hit on. I think he is a 21 million dollar punter I heard by the end of his contract.
