View Full Version : Food and Drink I ordered off the senior menu

I'm in a Perkins while on the road, and I'm watching my calories. They have a 55+ menu that is the same food with a better calorie count, and I ordered my meal from it. It's the first senior discount I've ever received and the first senior meal I've ever ordered.

How did this happen to me?

One of the movie theaters around here used to have kiosks where you could buy tickets. I would always pick that even though I was nowhere close. In my eyes senior discounts are bullshit. You grew up in a time where you could go to college and pay for it working part time at a gas station now you get discounts on stuff...

Opportunity for improvement in the area of being resourceful for you. You can get the senior discount and the military discount. Ain’t nobody can check if your old enough for a senior discount. If you say you’re old they aren’t going to make you verify. That would be disrespectful to the elderly.

I forget to ask for the discount. Some places start discounts at 55, some at 60, some 62, and some at 65. I did not qualify for $2 off the haircut I had today - but they still cleaned up my hairy ears.
I need to be more diligent in asking, but I forget.
I want to buy some ginkgo biloba, but the pharmacy is the last thing I go through at the grocery store, and by then I've forgotten.

The first time I received a senior discount was only a year or so ago. I was reaching for my wallet as the cashier told me the total, then she looked up and said "Oh, forgot the senior discount", which she then deducted from the total. I'd never asked for one before, and didn't then. I froze, squinting my eyes a bit with one of those 'Whaaaaat' looks. She seen my expression and tried to recover with "Oh, I'm sorry" I was still a bit stunned but managed to get out "Yes, I'm old enough for the damn thing". I couldn't tell you what happened the rest of that day, I was a bit lost in the realization the I was a fucking senior citizen. What bothered me the most was I didn't even ask for the damn thing.

I need to calculate that out. It's probably about the same. It had smaller portions at smaller prices for people like me who are shrinking due to 56 years of spinal column compression.

Haven't been to Perkins in forever, probably around HS, but it's pretty comparable with most of the homestyle sitdown restaurants with an emphasis on breakfast.

Better than Dennys
Less crowded/bustling than IHOP
Most comparable with Tippins, because both also have some renown for pies and desserts.

But they could never stay in business anywhere around wherever I was. Last one I saw operating was the one off Main in Grandview and it's been closed forever.

What's nice is going to the fast food restaurants and asking for a senior drink. Taco Bell use to be free, most places charge anywhere from 50 cents to a dollar. Bob Evans has a 55+ section on their menu, but I think it's really just smaller portions for a smaller price.

I started playing golf again when I turned 59 and I found most golf courses where lived gave a nice discount. Where I live now, everyone is a senior, so it's no big deal.

About 5 years ago, we invited the kids over for a Friday night dinner - told them to show up around 4-4:30 and we'd shoot the shit for a while.

Wife's idea - she sat the table and took the night's before leftovers and made it up to look like dinner was on the table. Well, the kids arrived about 4PM and there we were, sitting at the table and telling them, "C'mon sit down! Don't want dinner to get cold"..........

The looks on their faces was priceless....they still give us shit about it to this day. ROFL

When I was 18, I got a summer job as an elevator operator at a 7 story hotel. The old style with a cage door you had to look through to see the floor numbers and a handle to go up and down.

It was in downtown St. Petersburg and everyone lived there fulltime, no one checked in and no one checked out unless they were carried out. Every evening they would all come down to watch Lawrence Welk together in the lobby. Afterwards they would all have to go up to their rooms, and that was the end of the evening for me. This is it.
