View Full Version : Life What's your level of Tinnitus

I've had Tinnitus for years. Being around squealing Hogs and lots of firearms. Going into a sow barn with 700 sows screaming for food at the same time is the equivalent of being right in a jet engine.

But whats weird is that I'd say on a scale of 1-10 my tinnitus level was always around a 4-5.

Since I sold my farm I have no issues with loud noise but about 3 months afterwards my tinnitus jumped straight to a level 10.

I don't understand why and there's no fix. It could surely drive a weak person insane but that's not me. When I lay down at night it's horrible !!!! and i can't sleep with a radio on to mask the noise so it really sux!

And yeah I've watched all the youtube doctors that show you to beat on your head in various spots and it don't solve the problem.

There's got to be an answer. Why can the medical community figure this shit out!!!!!

Thoughts?

I am calling mine mild. I have no idea how it started.

I have used apps on a phone and they do nothing. I do not hear it during the school day because there is always noise. When it is quiet, It comes and goes.

Overall it sucks.

Have you tried drilling a hole into your parietal love or piercing your ear drum with a crochet needle? Let me know if that helps.

Heavy metal concerts weekly from 1984 to 1990 standing directly in front of 20-foot high speaker towers = a now constant “weeeeeeeeeeee...” I’m so used to it that I don’t notice it.

Mine is a 10 as well...it is extremely irritating

I have grown used to it and ignore it. Thanks for reminding me. Its now ringing like an annoying dentist drill.

At night tying to sleep is the worst but very low music or even a fan running seems to help.

Any idea what triggered it?. and did it evolve over time?

I'm gonna call mine a 7, because when I read about symptoms and how bad it is for other people, it reads like it should be awful, but it doesn't bother me because I've had it for over 35 years. At night when I'm sleeping? Yep, ringing like you had firecrackers go off next to you. Constantly, always. But, after so many decades it just doesn't bother me.

I know exactly how it happened too, my old drunk dad (RIP) kept blasting music way too loud near me when I was very young, and the hearing/sight nurse detected it when she visited our grade school.

I'm not sure how to grade it. If I listen to it, it's louder than the TV is right now. Fortunately, I can kind of tune it out. It got notably louder in 2018 for some reason.

I went on vacation a month or two ago, and we were in some very quiet area of Glacier National Park. My wife and I both independently noticed that our tinnitis almost completely went away, which is unprecedented. It came back once we got back to the lodge. So I've developed a theory that tinnitus is somehow related to background noise or electronic waves that bounce around in urban areas.

The closest thing I can compare it to is cicadas in the summertime thats what it sounds like. I think sometimes when allergens are in air it worsens for me.

I dont have a clue how it happened rock concerts went to many with ears ringing for days after. Worked around heavy machinery and equipment never thought to use ear plugs in 80s.

I have no idea how to put it on a scale have no idea whose is worse or better. I do know just one day I had it and thought it would go away it never did. I went to an ear specialist and first thing he told me is basically learn to live with it. He did a hearing test in the sound proof room thingy and my hearing was fine for my age. I left with handout material on how to cope and sent on my way. About 2 weeks later I received a 250 dollar bill that insurance didnt cover. Fought the insurance to no avail payed and just deal with it.

There is no test for tinnitus as far as I know except for questions the doc asks on what you hear. Maybe this has changed now because it maybe 15 years when I went to doc about. I thought it might be some inner ear infection or something.

There is a test where you wear headphones and they play different frequency sound and you indicate which ear it's in.

Mild to medium, I guess... ringing since I was a kid, and all the Metallica concerts probably didn't help. Sometimes, alone or in a very quiet place, I'll be like... holy shit, that's loud. Not terribly obnoxious day to day though.

Unless I'm thinking about it. Like right now.

Goddammit.

yeah

i did that one in sound proof room but he told me its a standard hearing test and I was ok with my age consideration. He told me they diagnose tinnitus by symptoms and that hearing loss is not always that much affected.

One of my buddies had a silencer on his .223 and had me shoot it both ways. After I shot it without the silencer, I said, "OW"

He was like, "Oh sorry, I don't even think about it anymore."

4 years of Field Artillery when I was in my 20's has my ears ringing now that I am in my 50's. I have some hearing loss as well as the ringing. I can still hear some tones with no problem but others just aren't there anymore. Looks like I will be able to get around 20% VA disability which is only about a hundred bucks but I will take it. Just waiting for it to clear at the VA but my advisor says artillery vets usually get that. Plus when I am ready to accept my aging I can get free hearing aids.

I genuinely feel you here, Hog

Had TERRIBLE tinnitus as a boy and young teen, the never ending ringing in my ears would drive me absolutely insane

Ma took me to the doc a couple times and it was basically “there’s nothing we can do, he’ll probably outgrow it”... I haven’t looked into it for a long time, but back then science pretty much didn’t have a freaking clue about what to do

It sounds like nothing has changed in that regard

I’d be looking into anything if I were you, everything from homeopathic stuff like earwax candles to simple cotton balls stuffed in your ears, to finally... a good drug that zonks you out enough to sleep

never had it, or could hear it until about three years ago. now, if the decible level in the lounge room exceeds a certain level (family tea nights, upwards of 8 people), i can't sit in the same room. it's unfair of me to ask them to be quiet, so i cook for them, then i go to the office.

in the car, i have to ask for quiet. which for my wife is hard to do ROFL

at work, in the workshop, if more than one grinder is going, i HAVE to wear ear plugs. and that is more than 20 feet away from the grinders.

water from the shower stall hitting the tiles hurts my ears.

and our staffies bark... fuck me dead. ROFL

on a normal day, in a quiet house, i sit on average, a 4. but, it's all dependent on the surroundings. (it never bothers me while sleeping, as the wife always is watching a show, but even then i have to ask her to turn it down quite often.)

Years ago, before news of the benefits of hearing protection reached rural northern Missouri, I went out shooting with my dad one day. We were primarily shooting a .357, and probably put a couple of hundred rounds through it. After that, my ears rang nonstop for months. Eventually it went away, but my hearing was never the same after that, and it's only gotten worse. I don't know if that's tinnitus or not, but I've been told that when your ears ring like that it's basically part of your eardrum dying, and after it stops you'll never hear anything in that particular sound range again.

Now, if I'm in a place with a lot of background noise, like a bar, I basically can't hear anything anybody says unless they're talking right in my ear. People probably think I'm an asshole because I don't talk much when I go out, but I just can't hear them, and long ago tired of leaning across the table yelling "WHAT?" over and over.

Also, I may be an asshole regardless of hearing loss. Opinions vary. :)

I'm kinda leaning towards Rainmans theory that all the waves from the devices and wifi we have around us have something to do with part of it. I basically got away from all the loud noise exposure in November of 2017 and about 3 months later it goes from level 5 straight to level 10 .

Was 2018 when they started this 5G stuff?

Years of playing drums and being around loud amps got me. I've got about 20% loss in my left ear, and 10% loss in my right ear.

Not too bad but still pretty annoying. My tinnitus sounds like locusts singing in the summer time at sunset. Maybe that's why it doesn't bother me that much. That's a pretty cool sound.

4000 hz range? Same kind of loss here but a little more pronounced. We seem to fit the pattern for noise induced loss. My case was probably jet engines. Flight lines, ships, flying, etc. catch 22: wear hearing protection besides flight helmet, couldn’t hear radio calls clearly. No double hearing protection and do my job better - live with loss and tinnitus.....

Tinnitus is most commonly rated at 10%. It is the most frequent VA disability rating given.

Though your former service’s department may cover the VA rating as well through the CRSC/CRDP programs, if it applies to your status.

Mine varies from mildly annoying to to a full blown train yard. One of my jobs early in my telco life was to monitor inter-office trunks and that required plugging your headset in the monitor jack. Mind you was pre-digital transmission so all the gain was set manually. You don't want to plug into one that should be set at 1.5 and somebody missed the dot and set it to 15.

Loud music and riding Harley’s . Not so much from the sound of the bike, but from the wind. Wear ear protection boys. Once I started wearing ear plugs while I ride, specifically long highway runs, I’ll never go back.

I literally hate these architects' dreams of large open spaces. With no drop ceiling panels, all ducting exposed. The sound of conversations in a bar just rattles around in a low drone because the acoustics are so bad. I cant hear the waitress so I just point to the item on the menu. If she asks something I have to stick my ear near her face. I try to avoid places like that as best I can.

If it's dead quiet I notice it but I do agree with Rain Man that it's related to urban settings. When I'm in moab camping it's gone then back when I return home.

A fan running on low cancels it out for me.
