FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- After struggling in training camp and missing two extra-point attempts in the New York Jets' preseason opener, veteran kicker Chandler Catanzaro has announced his retirement.

Coach Adam Gase said Catanzaro, 28, revealed his plans the day after the game.

"He came in Friday morning and told me he was done, he was retiring," Gase said.

On Saturday, the Jets hosted a handful of free-agent kickers, eventually signing Taylor Bertolet. He was on their 2018 training camp roster and played most recently with the Salt Lake City Stallions in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football.

"When I finished my career at Clemson, playing in the NFL was just a dream," Catanzaro wrote on his Instagram account. "After five years in the league, it's time to move on. I can't say I ever thought I would've been a kicker, but I'm thankful that kicking chose me."

God has blessed me far more than I deserve. When I finished my career at Clemson, playing in the NFL was just a dream. After five years in the league, it’s time to move on. I can’t say I ever thought I would’ve been a kicker, but I’m thankful that kicking chose me. I thank God for my ability every day, and I’m forever grateful for all the game of football has provided. I’ve been through the highest of highs, the lowest of lows, and everything in between. I’ve learned so much about myself and about life through the game of football. I have no regrets. I worked my tail off and gave my absolute best every time I stepped onto the field. What will remain, however, are the relationships I’ve built along the way. I want to wholeheartedly thank everyone for the prayers and encouragement along my journey. For my parents and my family for tirelessly supporting me and my dreams. For my wife Mieke for her unconditional love and support and reminding me what is most important in life. For all of my teammates. For the coaches who believed in me the most- you know who you are. It’s time for the next chapter of my life. The best is yet to come!

A post shared by Chandler Catanzaro (@thecatman39) on Aug 11, 2019 at 6:37am PDT

He had to return a $500,000 signing bonus and just pissed away $2.3 million. ROFL

I wouldn't ever want to be a kicker in the NFL.

In a situation where these guys have to line up for a game-winning kick:

IF HE MAKES IT: credit to the QB for getting his team into position to win!
IF HE MISSES IT: FUCKING KICKERS!!!

True for the misses. But I will always give Stoyanovich credit for that winning field goal against Denver. Right after that kick I walked out of the bar I was at in Boulder flipping the fans off.

Being a kicker (or punter) would be one of the best NFL gigs.

You don't suffer the wear and tear on your body that most players do, and still make millions of dollars in your career. A better than average kicker/punter can make it 10+ years in the league.

And if you're really really good you can start your career when ol' lcarus here barely had any pubes and still be playing when ol' lcarus here has gray in his pubes. Ala Adam Vinatieri. I was at the game against the Patriots in the late 90s when he missed that "gimme" to lose the game. I was in section 110 in that end zone. Place went nuts. Such a fond memory.......the game and the barely having any pubes.

He made some money and I bet he looked at Lin Elliott and Scott Norwood and realized that he was headed down that path. If so, it's a good move to get out now.

I wouldn't say the dude pissed away $2.3 million - seems likely that he was getting cut anyway. So by that token, all he was pissing away was the signing bonus.

Guy's made more than $6 million in his career. He'll be alright.

I think I’d rather be put on an island against Tyreek or Julio for 16 games than be an NFL kicker

Hey. How did this get past the filter?

There is no Lin Elliott filter any more. We have Patrick Mahomes, so we have released all of our anger about Lin Elliott. Lin Elliott's soul has been freed, and Lin Elliott has re-entered Chiefsplanet society. Lin Elliott Lin Elliott Lin Elliott.

Kickers are weird.

Dude was amazing at Clemson his last couple of years and had a 60 yard leg to boot. Then he went undrafted somehow.

And was pretty good for a bit; set some records for consecutive makes without a miss to start a career. Had a couple of good season after that. Then he sucked.

Kickers can just fall apart at any moment and most of the time you just don't see it coming. Ask the Vikings.

Speaking of - damn Vikings just traded a 5th rounder for the Ravens backup. Some dude with a very Viking name that I can't even begin to pronounce. Who the hell gives up a 5th for a K? I am very confused.
