KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man died Tuesday after a fall at the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri.

Kansas City Police Department spokesman Capt. Tim Hernandez said the man fell around 4 p.m. and was pronounced dead on the concourse near the base of the 217-foot tower.

Hernandez said the man "had fallen or jumped off the tower."

"We are saddened and heartbroken by this tragedy," Matthew Naylor, president and CEO of the National WWI Museum and Memorial, said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the family of the individual involved who lost their life. We look to the Kansas City Police Department to conduct an investigation and share their findings."

Selfie or jump. It’d be hard to fall up there if you weren’t doing something stupid.

Tear it down.

It’s a symbol of violence. It’s also racist because of how African-Americans were being treated at the time.

Typical of this spoiled generation. When he heard, "Give me liberty or give me death," he took both.

They'll probably try to blame it on Tyreek.

Remember, it's not the fall that gets you, it's that sudden stop at the end.

Being the weirdo I am, I've thought about stuff like this before. Depending on how far I'm falling, I might die before I hit the ground.

I believe that can happen if the person falls far enough.

Ban memorials.

We would then erect a memorial to them before immediately tearing it down.

Are the Memorial grounds still the place for . . . hedonistic rendezvous? Or is that a relic of a bygone era?

High up enough to give a person chills

Nah, just recalling [I think I've mentioned it here before] the first time I'd ever been to the WWI Memorial.

In 8th or 9th grade, we marched in the American Royal parade [marching band]. The bus was parked at the Memorial grounds and we walked through a veritable sea of rubbers and fliers for 'hustle clubs' to board.

Lot of snickering from semi-rural adolescents.

There's really no way at all to accidentally fall off that tower.

I intended to go a few years ago, but the one day I had to do it happened to be the one day of the week that it's closed. Oh well.

MURDER.

It would be hard to prove. I could see if someone wants to end it could make that jump from up there.

That's what I thought when I was up there looking down.

I was like holy crap that would be one heck of a fall.

Probably happens more with people who don't intend to fall to their deaths.

That's what I was thinking, too. My class went to the top of the tower when I was in high school and I remember the outside wall on the deck being chest high for most of us.

I don't think it's the hot spot it once was since they tore down St. Mary's and built the Federal Reserve there. Lots of armed feds wandering around 24/7.

Now we have a new fourth theory.

He fell.
He jumped
He was pushed.
He was shot in old west fashion.

I know this guy through a Facebook group. He made a Facebook post from the top of the building apologizing for what he was about to do. He leaves behind a family with 3 kids.

You can make jokes, but people out there are suffering.

Probably happens more with people who don't intend to fall to their deaths.I think that there would be some mathematical equation that would take the victims height and weight, the height of the memorial, etc. that would determine the trajectory and landing area for a "fall" versus being pushed, as the added force of the push would have an exponential affect on the landing spot.

Completely agree. I've always thought suicide is just about the most selfish and cowardly thing a person can do. He deliberately destroyed the lives of his wife and his 3 children.
