View Full Version : Chiefs Spags deserves some praise today

Defense struggled in the first 2 drives and we shut them out the rest of the game. Excellent adjustments were made by that staff today.

That’s what I want to see from this defense!

There was plenty of confusion and miscommunication by the D on the first drive. It did get cleaned up the next three quarters. Looked good overall.

The point was made about how good of buddies Andy and Gruden are. Gruden kind of gave up also once he knew the inevitable outcome.

We have seen lots of coaches that would have used their timeouts etc.

Sutton would go whole games without proper adjustments. It only took Spags a few drives - pretty happy with that. Always a tough place to play and the Raiders were fired up early. It happens. We are the bench mark, and teams are going to bring their A game against us.

Let’s be honest those two drive killing interceptions were more on the Raiders being the Raiders rather than the Chiefs defense being ballhawks.

He took their big emotional end of an era sendoff and turned it into 10 points with this still wet behind the ears group.

He turned Sacksquatch Jones loose, he got Gilligan off the island yeeeah

Still wanting another corner, but we certainly got a good look at this groups potential today... they had to hold it down for a bit while Pat figured it all out

In this modern day NFL where total shits can complete 65% holding anyone to 10 points is an excellent day.

This defense is much improved.

Chief Northman
09-15-2019, 06:51 PM
They looked somewhat soft early, but the front was playing straight up and the coverages were vanilla. As mentioned in other threads, Spags made adjustments and It is refreshing to see the coverage being multiple. Some of the pass rush concepts were interesting too, with the odd overload combined with rolling coverage - this clearly confused Carr. This is an encouraging development: A defensive play caller that understands how an offense is attacking him, and he counters with changing a lot of pre/post snap looks to affect the offense’s decision making.

I still don't think this is, or will be, a very good defense, but they did a good job of settling down and letting Carr be Carr.

I'd like to see the DBs work on defending the deep ball. Brady and Rivers are just going to be chucking the ball up and letting our guys shit their pants.

petegz28

36 points allowed in 2 games. 7 if not 14 arguably are garbage time points. Even at face value that's 18 points a game.

No one should ever bitch about 18 points a game average. Especially with our offense.

Hard to imagine Reid can get any hungrier (haha) but he seems like a different coach too.

This is usually a game where we slam the brakes in the 4th quarter, especially with Mahomes' ankle. We didn't. Last week, Reid seemed like he wanted Mahomes to obliterate Ramsey late in the game. Maybe part of it is more trust in Spags. Definitely more trust in Mahomes. Maybe part of him is still pissed off about New England last year. In any event, I hope we never let up. This is good Andy.

Clark and Jones are beasts. Breeland looked good. Ward did pretty good. Fuller had a good day.

We can win the SB with today’s defense.

I’m happy we won, and Fuck the Faders in general. But let’s be honest. The defense we played today against a bunch of nobodies likely gets shredded by the Pats. Luckily we have some time to gel. But most playoff teams aren’t gonna have the lackluster offensive weapons the Fade have.

Saw the first glimmer of some serious stunt and twist work by the d-line today. My guess is that they decided to amp up that strategy to combat the quick throw offense.

Once we get the technique, timing, and communication down on those, we're going to be just fine.

It is very nice to see us at 19, that's wonderful.

Sunday will be interesting (to say the least), at the up-to-the-seconds rankings (http://www.nfl.com/stats/team) we'll be going up against the #1 offense and #2 defense. But the Ravens having played Miami and Arizona for their first two games, Miami being a bye-week where you're awarded a win, might say as much about their standings as anything else! Let's pray playing at home proves to be the magic we need to beat them solidly.

I'm mostly looking at the run D from their league worst yards per attempt metric. Fortunately our offense is forcing teams to play from behind so it isn't as concerning. I also understand that yards per attempt doesn't tell the whole story as it can be easier to break off longer runs against pass personnel. Either way, it doesn't seem too concerning given our offense in today's game and I do think the defense as a whole is better than last season just from an aggressiveness and in-game adjustment standpoint. I'm anxious to see how they do next week as I imagine Baltimore will employ a similar offensive game plan as they did in our last meeting.

Not according to all the crybabies in the first 12 minutes of the game.

duncan_idaho

I grade the run D entirely on its ability to make stops and keep teams from just gashing the Chiefs 5 yards at a time for long, methodical drives that kill the clock and keep the Chiefs O off the field.

So far, they’ve passed the test each time. As long as they can get stops when the game is close, I’m good with the D.

The Raiders has some success early thanks to the passing game. The adjustments the Chiefs made limited that success. So nice to see in-game changes that work rather than rubbing the same scheme the whole game and expecting success.

Good point.

The Raiders offense is awesome and Sutton always struggled with them.

Ah, shit. Neither of those things are true.

I covered this last week. It's going to take more than beating up on Bob Sutton's punching bag to show me this D has progressed. I expect even a bottom 10 defense to clown on this club.

Next week at home, against Baltimore, is going to teach us a lot more about what we've got.

They just put up 24 pts last week on a good Broncos defense. And they put up 33 last year on us in Oakland.

Not saying we don’t need to prove it against better offenses, but those are the facts.

In previous seasons regardless of opponent if the offense got shut out in the second half on the road you know the opponent would have got some points on the board vs Sutton, leading to a nervous finish. I liked that they finished the game out which hopefully shows a change in culture.

I'm a little more optimistic, but not convinced. I am happy they didn't let Oakland have any garbage time points. I really think KC's 2nd quarter offensive explosion totally demoralized them.

Which is GOING to happen and a reason KC doens't need an ELITE defense to improve to championship level. They just need hold on until KC's offense breaks their opponents' will.

It was nice to see them NOT fall into that 'oh here we go again' mentality after the 1st quarter.

well, I mean, it's two games. I don't think anyone should be 'convinced' of anything at all in the entire league based on two games.

His defense is going to take time to reach their potential. His superbowl year that shut down brady, his defense sucked at the beginning of the year until the players learned the scheme then it became deadly. I anticipate it will steadily improve throughout the season to finish like a top 10 defense.

I haven't seen any quit in 'em yet, and that was arguably their BIGGEST problem over the past 2-3 years.

When things went bad, they just fell apart. They couldn't rally after a bad start. They usually STARTED strong and slowly unraveled. If they started bad, you KNEW you were in for a bad day.

That's as much about on field leadership as coaching, which is why I think the 'leadership transplant' might have been even more important than the coaching changes (both HAD to happen)
