Reminds me of the Bengals game last year. Bengals were very balanced and had a couple of nice early wins. Some people over thought it and believed the Bengals would give us a good game.

The two teams went in very different directions after that.

This should be the first time that we can really get an idea of what the defense is.

Big arm (but pretty average overall) QB, a few decent weapons, good running back, and at home for the Lions. We’re in Week 4, so there’s no more excuses about the turnover on that side of the ball. We’re not playing a gimmicky offense either, so that excuse is gone.

Time to see our defense just lineup and play.

Lions offense has been pretty meh.

Defense has played fairly well other than the meltdown week 1 in AZ.

I think we pull away in the second qtr and never look back.

41-20ish...be nice to keep Stafford in check and not given up many points.

Lions are the Patriots of the North with Matt Patricia as their HC.
They have Stafford, Amendola Jesse James, TJ Hockenson and Kerryon Johnson on offense.
Their defense has Trey Flowers, A'Shawn Robinson, and Darius Slay on defense.
Familiar name in Matt Prater as their Kicker.
It is our first NFC opponent of the season.
Should be an easyish win for us. Patricia will play us similar to how NE has played us in years past. They are no where as good as the Patriots though.

As an NFL fan, I'm embarrassed to admit how little I know about the Lions. They're kinda like the Bengals of the NFC. You know they exist, but they always suck so you don't pay any attention to them.

Might have to review some game tape (watch YouTube highlights), and see if a Lions fan forum even exists and do some reading there.

As I'm reviewing the game tape.

1.Stafford looks like a statue in the pocket.
2. The Eagles are repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot. So many mistakes. Jesus I'd be furious if I were an Eagles fan.
3. Stafford can make some throws when he has time.
4. The Lions defense looks like they're running in quicksand. It's like watching an entire defense of Reggie Ragland's.
5. Avoid kickoffs to Agnew. Punts too. He's had 2 good returns.

Summary: The Lions will probably score some points against our defense. Depending on how long we keep our foot on the pedal, our offense might score 40+ with ease. I wish we were at full strength against this defense. Would be fun to watch all our receivers on turf.

Chiefs win by double digits.

Lions have improved a great deal.

But they were monumentally shitty before....and have since graduated to just shitty, where they currently stand today.

Golladay, Marvin Jones are good WR's. They have a good RB and Stafford can still chuck the ball around, even though historically he's been kind of a turnover machine.

I just don't think this will be a pushover game like some think. It's a road game for one...always tough to win on the road.

So I just watched most of the Lions Eagles game. Really paid more attention to the offense than the defense.

Their OL seems soft. Allowed themselves to be pushed around by a dinged up Eagles DL. Didn't give up 9 million sacks though, like they did last year.

Run game didn't look that great. They had one big gain (41 yds?), other than that they were averaging less than 3.1 yds/carry. I think they were using three RBs today, and all pretty big guys from what I could tell. in spite of this and the Eagles weakened DL, as a group they only ran for 86 yds and a TD.

They have three pass-catching TEs they like to use. They could be trouble. Especially TJ Hockenson, the rookie. He looks big and fast (for a TE), runs a good route and has pretty good hands. Like the guy for the Ravens.

Only WR that looked consistently decent was Marvin Jones Jr. 6-for-101 and a TD. Their no. 1 receiver Galladay only caught two passes today for 17 yds, no TD.

Amendola was also a relative non-factor, 4-for-37.

In total, the Lions threw for 201 yds and a TD.

I checked a couple Lions boards and mostly they've written this one off. Two guys think that Stafford is as good as Mahomes, just doesn't have the weapons or the OC. They believe that Stafford will come alive at home and "destroy the over-hyped Chiefs."

At first glance, they look a lot like the Raiders this year. Improved over last year, but not close to the same class as our Chiefs.

I think Matt Stafford's career is a travesty.

I think he's the best QB on the most pathetic team over the span of his career in the NFL.

He's just gotten hammered, and yet instead of getting gun-shy and folding like a David Carr, he still just hangs in there.

I think he's tough as hell and still has one of the best arms in the league. Mentally tough, too.

But, as it's been said, not the most mobile guy. He's an old-school pocket QB.

Hockenson is a rising star TE. I honestly don't know much about their WR's this year.

All I know is that I would've heavily invested in the offensive line years ago and the Lions haven't.

Shit, i just looked up their drafts and they haven't drafted a single offensive lineman in like four years.

I think Patricia will have a good defensive game plan - but we've got too many weapons to be held in check for long. Regardless this game can only benefit Mahomes as he goes against a New England style defense. The more these coordinators throw at him - the more dangerous he becomes.

Kerryon Johnson and TJ Hockenson were nice adds on offense, but it doesn’t seem like they’ve taken off. They scored 27 points but 7 of those were a return on ST’s.

Their pass rush isn’t that great either. Eagles had guys wide open a lot of the time last week.

This seems like a game that is close for awhile in the first half and then we pull away.

Buuuuuuuuttttt....Mike Daniels was spotted in crutches, so that’s a big hit right there. Slay’s status is up in the air too it seems. They still have Flowers and Harrison who are beasts, and Patrica is hit or miss but their D has been pretty tough overall. Gave up 34 combined to P Riv and Wentz. Not bad, not bad.

Mayyyy be tough sledding running the ball. Lions run D is definitely better than the fucking Raiders and they obliterated our run game. Hopefully our line isn’t poopy like it was in that game.

But, yeah. We should absolutely win this game. Just hope people aren’t bugging out if the Lions keep it close.

Stafford is one of those guys who puts up numbers that don't translate to wins. Detroit is better this year because their defense is better. So if they want to beat us, they'll need to do it on defense. Don't see that happening.

On a side note, apparently this is mahomes' first game played in a dome. So that should be interesting.

Megatron96
09-23-2019, 04:49 PM
Their defense, IMO, is good and hopefully will be a good test to see how our new toys fare against a Patriots-style defense, as well as how much Pat has learned about how to decipher it, but they won't be able to stop our offense from scoring 34 points. I think they'll put a damper on our run game to a degree, but they don't have anyone that can do much about DR, Hardman, and Sammy. Much less do anything about Kelce.

And the Lions offense will be a bigger test for our defense than anything we've faced this season. Mostly because of Stafford. Stafford is a solid QB with a live arm and some ability to scramble left in him. And he's a traditional QB; he's going to set up his line according to what he sees pre-snap, go through his reads and throw the ball to open receivers, mostly on target. He's not going to give us the game through inexperience or lack of intelligence. He might throw an errant pass; it's just in his nature sometimes.

Their RBs and WRs don't look that scary, but their TE group are all decent receivers. Should be a good test of our LBs/safeties coverage and tackling skills. They should be busy.

At the end though, the Lions don't score a lot, just 21 points a game. They'd have to play at a higher level offensively to have a chance of beating the Chiefs. At least two scores better.

They looked good in that game man. Their defense has been overhauled, their front 4 is nasty.

Lions run D is definitely better than the ****ing Raiders and they obliterated our run game. Hopefully our line isn’t poopy like it was in that game.

But, yeah. We should absolutely win this game. Just hope people aren’t bugging out if the Lions keep it close.

By design. They put 9-10 guys within 4 yards of the line of scrimmage. How did that work out for them stopping patty going over the top. Teams can slow down and even obliterate "an" aspect or player on our offense, but that just means we obliterate them in others ways. They get to pick their own poison.

Reminds me of the Bengals game last year. Bengals were very balanced and had a couple of nice early wins. Some people over thought it and believed the Bengals would give us a good game.

The two teams went in very different directions after that.

I think this is a good comparison.

The Chargers moved the ball on these guys pretty easily. IIRC, they missed some FG's and turned the ball over (3?) times in the redzone.

And IMO, the Chargers look like a 7 (at most) win team right now.

One does exist and ill post the link once your boards mods tell me its ok .

Actually completely agree with you on the Chargers win total, me and my friend were saying the same thing yesterday. They’re a below bubble team. But they can still move the ball, as they showed. Detroit still kept points off the board. Yaaaaa they missed some Fgs but Chargers gonna Charger.

What makes this game a 99.9% chance loss for them is that their offense is completely and utterly underwhelming overall. They have decent personnel but eh...they just don’t inspire confidence. Especially against Football Jesus. I think our D can honestly keep them under 20 if they have a nice day.

I think you're part right and part wrong.

I think Stafford, Cutler, and Rodgers are all similar in pure talent when they came into the league. They're all different mentally and in terms of their situations.

Stafford, in a different situation, probably doesn't turn into what he is. After being with the lions he's just passionless at this point. Collecting a check and relying on his talent to coast.

He's turned INTO Jay Cutler, but Jay was always an apathetic half asser with gobs of ability. I don't think Jay improved one bit from his rookie season to his last snap. He just didn't CARE. He had no passion. Ever.

I think the Lions beat that kind of apathy into him. The end result is the same, but it's sad how he got there. With Jay Cutler it's sad his career didn't end up more like Jeff George. He wasted his own talent. The Lions wasted Stafford's.

Megatron96

Stafford is a tough, talented QB that has always wanted to win, period. I remember when he came into the league; he said he idolized Brett Favre (can you see the similarity in his game?) and that he wanted to bring a championship to Detroit. Years of being beaten down, the constant carousel of coaches/systems, etc., may have taken away his passion at this point though.

I remember when he got hurt early in his career, and was sidelined for a season. He battled back from that and since then he's been as durable a QB as there is in the league.

IMO, he's been plagued by two things that have kept him from leading his team to top tier status: bad management and coaches, and inconsistent play.

I'm not going to get into the bad management/coaching bit; it's been well-documented in the past.

Anyway, I was watching some of that Eagles game and he left some plays on the field that were nothing more than throwing from odd platforms/arm angles and simply being inaccurate. Some may have been also due to bad decision-making, but I wasn't watching that closely so I can't speak to that. But he definitely missed a few throws that should've been positive plays if not for inaccurate throws.

IMO, this version of the Lions is not the same team as last year. And yet that team somehow beat the Patriots.

This year's Lions team somehow best both the Chargers and the Eagles. After tying the Cardinals? Lions always do weird things.

Here's the thing: the Lions aren't healthy in some key spots. Their best two DBs are hurt, D. Slay their best CB is nursing a hamstring, his right one I think. Against our WRs he's going to have to run full speed for an entire game. If I were their DC I might sit him, but they are one game back of GB after last night and so I expect him to play in some fashion.

DT Mike Daniels, their best DL is out, and another D lineman, Hand, is nursing a hand or arm injury and may not play.

On offense Amendola is dealing with a chest injury of some kind, but he'll likely play.

Something else to keep in mind. This Sunday the Chiefs are playing on turf, and turf makes fast guys faster. Also, up to this point are D, in particular Mr. Frank Clark has played in extreme heat, on dirt, and in the rain, none of which are optimal for footing, quickness, or bull-rushing. This weekend he'll be playing on the best kind of surface for his style of play. Ditto for Chris Jones in the power rush area. Might be interesting to watch.

Of course, the converse of the above is that the Chiefs aren't healthy either. Shady's dinged, and we don't know how bad, Damien's out for this Sunday, and now we hear Darrel is dinged up. And we know about the other key issues already.

If we were completely healthy I think the Chiefs could blow this out to a 3-4 TD lead early in the second half. As it is, While I still completely believe in Neo, er I mean Mahomes, and I think this defense is going to play fairly well, the Lions are just weird. I think it's going to be a game with shoot-out potential. 42-37 Chiefs.

Their OL had some troubles at the beginning of the season (16th), but they've switched some guys around and is now ranked 11th overall.

LG Joe Dahl appears to be the 'best' lineman, but he's new to the position apparently. He did stop Fletcher Cox for the entire game against the Eagles.

Frank Ragnow C, is expected to become a Pro-Bowler if not this year probably next.

That’s what’s so funny about the Cutler comparison. Pat hasn’t turned it over often.

He had a couple bad games, but overall has been really good protecting the ball.

Pat has 26 TD’s to only 2 INT’s in his 10 games (counting playoffs) since that Rams game.

That is crazy
Rodgers-esque ratio.
