Ned Yost, manager of Royals’ 2015 World Series championship team, will retire

BY LYNN WORTHY
SEPTEMBER 23, 2019 10:57 AM

Ned Yost, the Royals’ career leader in managerial victories who guided the franchise to the 2015 World Series championship, will retire after the 2019 season ends Sunday.

The Royals announced Yost’s retirement on Monday morning, the day after the team hit the 100-loss mark for the second straight season. He was the first Royals manager to lead the franchise to back-to-back American League pennants and finishes with a 22-9 postseason record. Yost’s .710 playoff winning percentage is the best among those who’ve managed 20 or more postseason games.

Yost, the longest-tenured manager in the American League, surpassed 700 wins as Royals manager in May. Last Monday in Oakland, the northern California native reached 1,200 career managerial wins in his 16 combined seasons leading the Royals and Milwaukee Brewers.

Yost and Royals general manager Dayton Moore are expected to speak with reporters prior to Tuesday’s game at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals end the season with a five-game homestand.

“With the development of our young players and our returning veterans, I feel and hope the worst is behind us in this rebuilding phase of our organization,” Yost said in a release. “My plan all along was to get us through the rough times then turn it over to a new manager to bring us the rest of the way.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here as your manager and will never forget the good and the hard times we had together as an organization and a fan base. I will never forget the fact that you fans supported us through it all. Kansas City will always have a special place in my heart, and I look forward to rooting the Royals on to their next world championship very soon.”

Despite speculation that the Royals will hire former Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, who served as a Royals special adviser for player development this year, to succeed Yost, the Royals are not expected to move quickly to hire a new manager headed into an offseason of transition that includes the pending sale of the franchise.

“He’s a calming force for us,” Royals infielder Whit Merrifield said of Yost earlier this season. “Things haven’t gone great, but he’s always been positive and kept us working hard and continuing to move forward even though things haven’t gone as we would’ve hoped to this point. He’s been great about that, and we’re lucky to have him.”

News of Yost’s retirement spread Monday across the parking lot to Arrowhead Stadium, where Chiefs coach Andy Reid spoke.

“I would like to congratulate Ned Yost on his retirement,” Reid said. “I know there are a lot of great hunting and fishing days ahead for him.”

Yost became the Royals manager in May 2010, moving from an advisory role within the organization to take over for the fired Trey Hillman after 35 games.

The Royals lost 95 games in 2010 but would improve in each of the next five seasons under Yost: 71-91 in 2011, 72-90 in 2012, 86-76 in 2013, 89-73 in 2014 and 95-67 in 2015, capturing the American League Central Division championship.

The 2013 team was in contention for a playoff spot though the season’s final days. In 2014, Yost led the Royals to the playoffs for the first time since the 1985 World Series championship season.

Starting with the thrilling, extra-inning AL Wild Card Game victory at home, the Royals won a MLB record eight consecutive games to start the postseason, clinching the pennant with a four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals forced a deciding seventh game of the World Series at home but lost to the San Francisco Giants.

After the World Series title over the New York Mets in 2015, Yost went 81-81 and 80-82 the next two seasons before bottoming out at 58-104 last year. The Royals are 57-100 with five games remaining this season. He’s 744-836 overall as Royals manager.

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost announced Monday he will be retiring after Sunday’s season finale against the Minnesota Twins.

Yost, 65, spent 10 seasons as Royals manager, winning a World Series in 2015 and two American League pennants. He will also retire as the franchise’s all-time winningest manager.

This is tough. I know Ned caught a lot of heat from the fan base, some of it deserved. But Ned led this team through the most exciting times in Royals history and that includes the great teams we had in the 70's and 80's. I experienced the '80 and '85 World Series teams as a young man and they don't compare to the magic of those 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Enjoy your retirement Ned and thanks for all the great memories of a team that just would not quit!

I'll miss Ned. I hope new owner can find a good replacement.

Yost, 65, has managed the Royals since the 2010 season, logging a collective 744-836 record in that time. Prior to that, he’d spent parts of six seasons skippering the Brewers, with whom he won 457 games. Overall, Yost will complete his managerial career with a 1201-1338 record, two American League pennants and one World Series title. He’s 32nd all-time in total games managed at the MLB level, and his current total of 1201 wins ranks 45th — though he’ll have the opportunity to tack on a few more victories and six more games managed between now and Sunday’s farewell game.

Yost’s retirement has been widely expected, as the skipper himself has hinted in the past that he isn’t likely to see a rebuild all the way through. There’s no firm word yet on a successor to Yost, of course, but it was speculated last November when the Royals hired former Cardinals skipper Mike Matheny as a special advisor that he was a strong candidate to take the reins following Yost’s retirement. The Royals won’t make any formal announcement on the matter for now. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets that Matheny is indeed “expected” to be the team’s next manager, but MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan reports that the Royals have yet to commit to Matheny as the new manager (Twitter link).

Of course, even if that was the plan last November, much has changed in the Royals organization since Matheny’s hire. Owner David Glass has agreed to sell the team to Kansas City entrepreneur John Sherman, and while it’s been reported that general manager Dayton Moore will receive a contract extension once the new ownership regime formally takes over, it’s not as clear that the new owners will have the same vision for the manager and his coaching staff.

Lord - as bad as Matheny would be, Sveum would be only marginally better.

I can't speak to Grifol at all but I'd pick him of the three names being tossed around purely by default.

Surely they'll look outside the organization. Nobody presently in the organization 'deserves' the job; not without winning it in an open run-off at the very least.

And if it ends up being Matheny or Sveum you'll never convince me that anyone else was given an even shot. There's no way that they're the 2 best choices given the fact that there are 6 billion people on this planet.

Grifol is the only in house choice who is remotely acceptable, and it’s only as an alternative.

He’s progressive-ish, but I’m not convinced he’s as good as the talk.

He’s also an asshole according to buddies who work for the team. And not in a good way. In the backstabby, blame-placing way.

Personally, I’d love to see them go out and find someone like Brian Bannister who is on the cutting edge of things. Hopefully it sits until the sale to Sherman is finalized, or until he weighs in. I think he would argue for a more progressive type guy.

I think I remember some of those Grifol rumors surfacing in 2015 but they were quickly glossed over due to the success of the team at the time.

But I thought I recall some pretty strong friction between Brett, Grifol and some of the rest of the management staff over back-biting and people taking credit/placing blame.

I mean surely there's someone better than those guys. Ibanez is an interesting thought there. And y'all will look at me funny here but Stubby Clapp is gonna get a shot somewhere and I think he'll be a good one. He's a real nice mix of old school/new school and 'players mentality'/analytical mind.

Dozens of dudes worth looking at - there's no way Matheny or Sveum win a fair fight.

Ned Yost went from being a manager that managed "tight" and didn't do well with young players to a manager that kept a dugout and clubhouse loose and was mostly loved by his players. He deserves credit for that. He grew and changed from Milwaukee to KC and became proficient at managing the personalities and emotions of an MLB club house. He never really grew as an in-game tactician, but it turns out that where he DID grow, ended up being pretty important for the particular group of players that ended up bringing home the title. Congrats to him. Now...bring on someone that gives us a shot with the next group of playoff-caliber players.
