Anyone on here licensed or ever had experience in falconry?

I had a guy fly his bird into my pasture for some ducks. The bird had one when I showed up. I told him I was going up to the house and would be back with a gun to shoot his bird. He was gone ASAP. I would have driven my Hummer to my pond and blasted the shit out of his bird. Them ducks are my ducks

Yeah that's just not right in any hunting regard. What an ass

No, but I find it interesting. I know there’s some one day experiences in CA that seem pretty cool. Maybe one day when I’m old(er), and don’t have all the kids activities to root through, I’ll get into it.

I did it for a few years but not since I was about 8 years old.

It seems like a , i hate to use the term hobby, something you have to devote quite a bit of time to.
Hunting them must not coincide with regular hunting seasons.

Yeah I’ve read it takes years to actually get good at it. Including trapping your own bird of prey and then training it.

I love birds of prey (not just the Star Trek version either, SNR). I think I would enjoy falconry as a hobby.

You have to have a couple years apprenticeship, seems like finding a suitable mentor is part of the battle too.
The Florida permit covers 4 birds but not the kestrel.
Worth looking into , seems like a decent way to forget the business of the day and take your bird and dog out for a little hunting trip

I once was heavily involved in ostrichry, but they were too hard on my arm.

There’s a thriving group in Missouri.

I do a deep dive on falconry reading every 5 years or so. I don’t have enough time to fly every day so for me it’s a back burner hobby until later in life.

Those birds require a ton of attention.

I knew someone who did it and he weighed his bird every day. He based the amount of food based on weight and the birds weight varied every day. A few ounces either way could make a big difference. And they need to be flown frequently, like 4-6 times a week.

Seemed like too much work for me but I admit it looks cool.

I believe the Ostriches call that "Humanry".

Yeah I'm several years away from any attempt but it being cool isnt quite enough reason for that responsibility for me.
I like going into something with a good understanding ahead of time... I'm sure just the research and learning will be interesting enough to keep me busy for a bit.

I'm fortunate to live near the highest concentration of nesting raptors in the U.S. Used to dream about trying this when I lived in the mountains, but alas I like to hunt with dogs, and they are a time commitment. Used to get golden eagles and Cooper's hawks (agile forest hunters) hunting at my place. Check out the videos of Khazaks and Mongolians hunting with golden and steppe eagles. Amazingly cool.

It’s illegal in Missouri to kill a raptor. Doesn’t matter what it’s killing. If you don’t want it killed it needs to have a fence over the top of it.

I wonder what the success or lack there of to have one as a property protector of sorts.
