Without cheese, it's not pizza (to me anyways).

If it's a 1-topping pizza, the answer is pepperoni.

But man, if I can combo up, bacon and jalapeno is just amazing. And if I can go 3, bacon, chicken and jalapeno is about as good a pie as you can make.

Obviously pepperoni, sausage and mushroom is a foolproof standby but when I have a real pizza craving, it's almost always for the bacon/jalapeno because the salt/smoke of the bacon with the sweet/spicy of the jalapeno is just aces.

Yeah but there's no zing there; good pepperoni has a bit of bite to it. So does good italian sausage.

Bacon needs just a little help and when it gets it, it wins. But on its own it just can't quite overcome pepperoni or italian sausage.

A plain cheese pizza can be really good, but if you want to spice it up, add pineapple. And if you really want to make it fancy, add either beef or pepperoni.

A local pizza place near us has an optional topping that is driving my wife and me mad with foodlust. It's cream cheese. That may sound a little weird, but it's amazingly good. We're ordering from that place just for the cream cheese, and we're even ignoring the fact that their negligent delivery drivers have twice nearly hit me in their cars as I was walking.

hmmm.....

Like...globs of it? Or as a spread? In lieu of or in addition to the mozzarella?

I make homemade pizzas on the Kettlepizza and tend to use the fresh mozzarella blobs but a few little dabs of cream cheese on there would probably be pretty good as well.

It's little globs spread out on the pizza, and is in addition to the regular cheese. It doesn't take much, maybe a couple of globs per slice that are a half the size of a pat of butter. We were initially skeptical but curious and gave it a try, and it's amazing.

Hah! I worked at a small pizza restaurant in college that used cream cheese on multiple specialty pizzas. I can attest: cream cheese on pizza is INSANLEY good.

I can’t say it’s my single favorite individual topping though because it does work best with other toppings, whereas pepperoni as a solo topping definitely hits.

Interesting. I'd never even heard of such a thing until this local pizzeria started doing it, and they only started in the last year or two. They're the only place in my life radius that does it, and every place should. Cream cheese should be as common as pepperoni.

Salami makes for a fine topping.

Minsky's has the Papa Minsky's pizza which has Pepperoni, Salami, Red Peppers, and a different red sauce than normal. It's my favorite at Minsky's (except the several times over the years where they're out of Salami and substitute extra red pepper without bothering to inform me until after-the-fact. Seriously! WTF? If you make a substitution, it should be more pepperoni, not more red peppers.). As others have said, the Prime Cut is very good too.

Casey's pizza has trumped Minsky's. Available 24/7 in a store near me and always some slice or another ready to go. Their pepperoni is just about perfect. It's REALLY greasy, but I like it that way, and the crust is absolutely perfect. The "hot" sausage (as opposed to the regular sausage) is really good but they don't put it in the warmer so you have to order it. The beef and sausage are fine, but I like the plain cheese better, which is surprisingly adequate despite the lack of toppings.

Next poll should be favorite national pizza chain. Let's see there's Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's, Papa Murphy's, Little Caesar's. I know there's Marco's and California Pizza Kitchen and others but for the sake of simplicity just those 5 should be included.

Personally I like Papa John's best out of those 5. Pizza Hut used to be a close 2nd but they changed in recent years and not for the better. It sucks complete dick now. Domino's changed for the better but it's still not good. Never been a fan of Papa Murphy's and Little Caesar's is dog food.
