View Full Version : Chiefs Is Kelce a little "off" this year?

I can't put my finger on it but Travis Kelce looks a little off this season. He looks slower, a little clumsier and not at his best catching passes.

His blocking has been great so that's a positive.

I wonder if his ankle is not great after surgery.

Am I imagining this or are other people seeing something just not 100% with Travis? :hmmm:

The other team is beating the crap out of him on the regular. It's understandable that his concentration might be a bit broken after getting buttraped on every play

I thought he seemed unhappy earlier in the season, but lately he's been doing great. He made some fantastic plays yesterday getting YAC and first downs. And he's on pace for 1,200+ yards again.

This is true as well. He's been getting tackled on every play, it seems. And yet he's still on pace for 1,200 yards. Kelce is awesome.

He gets tackled and called for OPI, maybe a little gunshy and has nightmares of zebras?

Honestly I think he's just fine, but he's been the focus of defenses without Tyreek/Lizardman

What is off is Reid’s playcalling. He only had Hardman in for 9 plays last night!! 5 of them were passing plays

Hes on pace for his 2nd best season. Also with Mahomes out he's had his 2 worst games of the year. This might be the biggest reason, he's been the only one out of Hill, Watkins, and himself that has played in every game. He had several games that team's had to game plan for him, so he was getting doubles.

He's not as a fast as he used to be, but that's to be expected -- he's getting older. What sucks is he was old for his draft class. Dude was already 25 in his first season that he played.

Still the best TE in the league.

I think more defenses are doing what the Patriots/Lions did; use linebackers (sometimes 2) to bump him when he releases off the los.

I have been a bit curious about Kelce as well. It appears almost like he is playing under-water at times. He is still a certified Badass in my opinion, but I am wondering if that off-season ankle surgery slowed him a bit.

Without looking it up I think he’s 30, so yeah, he’s probably a touch less explosive.

As he gets older his skills will diminish but I think it's been tough when Tyreek and Sammy are out then he gets mauled off the line. I think when we have all of our pieces back it'll get real interesting. Now maybe teams are chipping him more regularly nowadays because they know it throws Mahomes off his game, or that it's easy to get Kelce bothered by it so he doesn't play as well, that could be a reason. I think of him as clutch, like a great FG kicker, when you need him, he's there, and that's all he needs to be. His swagger and leadership are just cherries on top.

Remember Kelce had ankle surgery this offseason. I think that limited his ability to train much in the offseason. If memory serves, I donít think he really did much of anything until training camp.

Ankle surgeries, no matter how minimal, are always slow to heal, and a pain in the ass.

suzzer99
10-28-2019, 02:56 PM
TG had another great 10 years after he was done making moves in the open field.

But Kelce needs to learn how to box out and catch contested balls better if he's going to last more than another couple years. His juking and YAC days are coming to an end.

I agree. He definitely looks slower. But he takes a lot of hits being a TE going over the middle and that takes its toll. I think his play peaked last year. Now that his celebrity status is at it's peak and he's gotten paid this works on you subconsciously(not as hungry) and you hope this is not the case. He does have that personality of ADD for sure.:)

He's 30. He's obviously lost a little athleticism but he doesn't look hurt or anything.

He's on pace for 1200 yards. He did fail to make some plays against the packers that he usually makes (he was pretty upset at himself as well) so that might be coloring it a bit. He's had some drops. I have confidence in him.

If you look across the league, I think defenses are putting more emphasis on slowing down the TEs. Ertz, Kelce, Kittle et all are all having slower years in production.

It also looks like the league is set on allowing TEs to get mugged so far this season.

He's been productive, as usual, but he does look noticeably slower. He's getting absolutely beat up off the line and down the field regularly, no doubt. Some of the "missed plays" and "drops" I've seen are due to defenders getting there early and ass-raping him before the ball gets to his hands. It happened several times in the GB game.

Kelce has not lost a step..I don't know what games you've been watching...he's attracting alot of defensive Attention and still making big plays and big blocks..last week he had a huge td..huge first down conversion and a 2 blocks that lead to TDS by other players..

I think he just looks slower compared to the guys on the field with him. He used to look freaky fast next to a bum version of maclin and Jason avant. And he doesn’t run full speed at tacklers anymore he’s playing smarter with his body.

Its freaking science guys, as our biggest fast guy, hes the least aerodynamic. So in the thin air of Mehico he had the least resistance hes gonna have all sesason, and the bigger feet and frame means more traction on a shit field. To top it off his famous Kelce brothers beer chugs have his body trained to party on with less oxygen while he downs a pitcher. The man was designed for that game. Chalk this W up to a superior genetic pool and years of academy training.

Travis may not have the acceleration and top speed he had say five years ago (according to the eye test anyway; unless someone has some actual numbers to work with), but his route-running, elusiveness, and ability to break tackles for YAC are as good as ever, IMO. How many times have we seen him catch the ball with a defender or two right there and he just makes a move and rumbles for extra yardage, usually for a first down.

In that respect, he's still the best in the league and doesn't seem to have lost anything in that regard.

That's how many yards Kelce has right about now (not counting lawns in front of his homes). So he's 167 yards short of his 4th 1000-yard season in a row.

How many TEs have had 4 1000-yard seasons in a row? 0.

Right?

LMAO

This "he looks slow" shit, i still don't see it.

I mean, compared to his team mates he looks slow, sure. We have a track star at every spot, of course he looks slow comparatively.

But the strategy for beating the Chiefs offense this year is to mug Kelce with sometimes as many as 3 guys. Kelce is clearly Pat's go-to receiver on critical downs. It shouldn't be surprising to see guys draped all over him when he catches the ball.

That doesn't make him slow. It makes him covered.

Indeed. However, I'm more referencing the fact that it seems like he gets 6-8 catches for 70-90 yards almost every game.

There has been no explosion from him on the stat sheet. Just steady production.

It's the most consistent year I've seen from a Chiefs player in a long time.

With his consistency being that awesome, and it is indeed awesome, with all of our other weapons at WR and Bell as an up-and-coming TE, I wonder what Kelce might bring to us in terms of some folks on D if we were to trade him?

I've mentioned this before, but I went through the All-22 of last year's entire season (focusing primarily on offense) and realized that Kelce is the most clutch guy we have.

Tyreek gets a lot of splashier plays, but Kelce gets the tough, dependable 1st downs in crucial situations. You have to respect a giant dude like that.

I would also like to mention that you can make a pretty decent highlight reel of his blocks that have sprung huge plays against good opponents. All things considered, I'd say he's a player. I'm expecting Kelce to up his game as we make our run.
