I just stepped outside my house and it smelled like shit. Thought maybe the sewer was backing up.

Drove ten blocks away. Still smelled of shit. Maybe I had roadkill lodged underneath the car? Nope.

Asked clerk at store if someone reported everywhere smelling of feces. YES.

Got home. Posted on FB.

EVERYWHERE IN KC SMELLS LIKE SHIT APPARENTLY

I think the worst was when Proctor & Gamble, Colgate, the UP yards, and the old stockyards were running full blast back in the 50s and early 60s. It was especially bad when it was a windless overcast day. Enough to gag a maggot.

The worst has got to be Milwaukee in the summer time; a combination of slaughterhouse, breweries and nearby cabbage fields. Holy fuck. I remember being stuck in traffic in that shit on I-94 on a still, humid August day. Even with the windows up and the air on there was no escape.

Went to Emporia State for a couple semesters. Worked at a farm and ranch store called Bluestem. Which was about 1/4 mile away from IBP packing plant. Every Wednesday I think it was, they would burn all the leftover blood and guts from production, and it would make the entire city smell like rotten burnt flesh. It was really awful. Restaurants in the area would see a pretty visible dip in sales on burning days.

The plant is just refrigeration now they don’t use the kill floor.

On industrial they had a Pizza Hut carry out in a little mall there and it was pretty close to Dolly Madison. One time I ordered a pizza and between the Pizza Hut, Dolly Madison and IBP they confluence of smells almost made me toss chow in line. It was rough.

Way back when Garden City had Monfort, Con Agri and IBP. Seemed like one of them was burning every day.

I don't know if it's still as bad as it used to be, or perhaps worse, but if you've ever caught a whiff of the ginormous landfill on Staten Island you won't forget it. Was there in the late 90s. Damn that was gross.

Somewhat related... I guess in LA this is the time that people seed their lawns, what with the cooler temps and all. Everyone uses manure to fertilize so the more suburban areas of the city smell like a rodeo for about a month. I used to hate it but now, after a decade plus, it's just a sign of fall. We don't have many of those so I almost like it.

This thing in KC sounds a bit worse but at least it's temporary.

Was just in the MPLS paper

November’s record cold temperatures have had Minnesotans grumbling, but Missouri residents got our cold weather — along with our farm odors.

Kansas City last week was hit by a cloud of stench that weather trackers traced to Minnesota.

In short, Missouri’s second-largest city smelled like poop.

The cold front that has Minnesotans digging out their winter coats swept south and took with it the smell of Minnesota pig farms and fields recently treated with manure.

“The front came through Wednesday evening and people noticed the smell that evening,” said Pamela Pietrycha a National Weather Service meteorologist in suburban Kansas City.

Early the next morning, meteorologists ran a backward trajectory using an air dispersion model to find out where the odor came from.

The culprit: “We backtracked it to southern Minnesota,” Pietrycha said.

The cold air layer was very shallow and winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour pushed it quickly, giving no chance for sweeter smelling layers of air to dilute the smell.

The Twin Cities had a similar experience two years ago, when unseasonably warm late-November weather thawed the soil and sent fertilizer odors wafting throughout the metro area.

Along with fertilizer, “the pig farms, the livestock farms, all that stuff gets lofted into that shallow air mass,” Pietrycha said, adding that Iowa probably contributed to the stink, as well.
