Lame ass refs today would have quick whistled the play dead, that fake to marcus was so legit.

That was one of the most incredible plays I've ever seen. I couldn't believe just how alone he was running down the field. And I honestly can't understand why no one was ever really tried it again. Not saying that they'd score a TD, but seriously why couldn't you get some easy yards doing it?

I imagine they warned the refs ahead of time to keep that from happening.

IIRC, Buddy Ryan had told his team to stop Marcus at all costs and that third down play. He called a total 11 man run blitz to keep Allen from making a first down. I "think" I remember hearing Ryan talk about it in his postgame comments.

In the right situation I think it could work in today's NFL. You might have to put someone outside on the other side of the play direction just to make them think you might toss something in that direction, say Kelce for example, but it really should work just fine in the right situation.

Also, I think I remember an interview with Bono where he said that they really were just trying to get the first down or something. He never expected to be able to run all the way down for a TD.

Did that video really go 20 minutes without ever showing the play in its entirety? I skipped through it since I knew a lot of the story.

And an interesting note to me is that we had both Kimble Anders and Tony Richardson on the field together. That's got to be the best pair of fullbacks to take the field since Bronko Nagurski and some other guy in the 1920s.

I added the video to the OP. Maybe they couldn't show it all due to rights or something. You still have to watch it on youtube.

Odd choice for you in particular RM, the cachet of Dorktown is the analytics around the play more than the play itself.

The 20 minutes of the video is all the data visualization that I always figured you consumed like babysitter porn.

Yeah, Jon Bois covers some interesting stories sometimes, but really drags them out.

I can't concentrate on both things, so I had to make a choice.

Haters, take note: if Steve Bono can run for a 76yd TD, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid can win a Super Bowl together.

I drove to AZ to see that game back in 1995 and it was crazy. 95% of the fans in the stands (including me) were completely fooled by that play. Marty always went with Marcus Allen on third and one it seemed like he always got it. Everybody thought Marcus had the ball and the Cardinals fans were cheering because they stopped Marcus on the play. A couple of second later the fans noticed Bono and Valerio on the other side of the field about 40 yards downfield running down the sideline. There was no replay in that stadium because it was in Sun Devil Stadium and they had an old school scoreboard so we had to wait until after the game to see what actually happened on the play.

Hey, I was at that game! It was so shocking to see, it was almost underwhelming by the time he scored. The defense quit and you could feel it. It was so easy, it was almost anticlimactic.

Awesome video though. Tons of interesting info. That streak of 30 years of almost zero wins by a drafted QB. Crazy.

He should have started zigzagging all the way across the field just to make the defense come and chase him down. Or if they don't, he could run out the rest of the quarter and dominate the time of possession.

With our luck, he'd have tripped while zig-zagging and fumbled the ball. I remember watching the play and praying he wouldn't trip over grass.

Can we get more gifs of Chiefs teams that can get 2 yards?

Thank you,

See, brother, that's the thing - it's was third down, and Steve Bono got more than 2 yards...

Reid would've called a screen to Blake Bell.

No dice.

Same here...practically anyone could have caught him. Said a lot about the Cardinals as a team at that point.

That was a busted play. Bono heard they had a couple of good restaurants outside the stadium and was running to get a table. The other players thought it was a hand-off to Marcus Allen. The reservations were in Valero's name, so he was in on the ruse.

ROFL.
LMAO

Valerio could've lapped Bono like Tyreek lapped Damian a couple weeks ago.

This was like someone randomly handing you $5 then kicking you in the nuts.

Pretty accurate for a Chiefs fan
