Maybe the Chiefs should get an in-game analytic team.

We should just turn Mahomes into Jackson ... since hes become alex smith from others reports we might as well become a run first team

Knowing the odds while gambling doesn't guarantee success.

THEY SAY ALL TEAMS ARE CREATED EQUAL. BUT YOU LOOK AT ME AND YOU LOOK AT THE RAVENS AND YOU CAN SEE THAT STATEMENT IS NOT TRUE! SEE NORMALLY IF YOU GO 1 ON 1 WITH ANOTHER TEAM YOU GOT A 50/50 CHANCE OF WINNING! BUT THE CHIEFS ARE A GENETIC FREAK AND NOT NORMAL! SO YOU GOT A 25% AT BEST TO BEAT US! AND THEN YOU ADD MAHOMES TO THE MIX, THE CHANCES OF WINNING DRASTIC GO DOWN FOR.OTHER TEAMS. SO THE WAY I SEE IT YOU GOT A 33 1/3 CHANCE OF WINNING

Andy definitely needs a quant for late game situations.

There is an outstanding podcast every Friday where Lefkoe has Warren Sharp on to break down games. They drill into coaching tendencies and teams that are doing things that kill their chances to win based on the analytics. To the Chiefs credit, I've never heard Andy Reid mentioned when Sharp lists the coaches who are making terrible analytical decisions. Whether Andy does this by instinct or whether he uses some analytical data I have no idea. I don't think he's a thought leader in the area, but maybe I'm assuming too much based on his age.

Harbaugh isn't perfect, either, though. It's one thing to know you should go for it. In the game against the Chiefs he was right to go for it on fourth down. But he should've been calling running plays. We couldn't stop those, and even if we had a solid run D the analytics say that is the highest probability of success.

Reminds me of the time AJ Foyt smashed an IBM ThinkPad at the Indy 500 when his car in the lead ran out of gas

Yup. Been saying this all season. And been touting Harbaughs praises even after they lost to the Chiefs playing that way. He understands how you need to play the game.

I don’t think we need to go all Moneyball, we just need someone Reid respects and trusts, like Childress was, to be the voice of reason once in a while

I’d hoped Bienemy could be that guy, but he’s apparently too young and inexperienced for Reid’s tastes... it’s easier to blow off the younger guys

remember that harbaugh's sexy analytics mean exactly shit when they Chiefs built, what, a 30-12 lead or something in the Ravens game, before he had to have his QB bail him out with the most insane 50-50 balls you've ever seen in a game

analytics is for baseball, not football, where you only get 16 games and random chance has a far greater impact

Yeah I’m sure that Andy Reid, coach with no rings, should totally not adapt and get extra help like former pupil John Harbaugh, who does have rings...

I mean why would Andy need help in a game during critical situations?

It's just a matter of time before Jackson gets a bad injury.

Yep. LJ is just a taller version of Vick. And yet everyone in the sports press and around the NFL is acting like they have never seen the likes of LJ before. How soon they forget. Do they not remember Vick? And Vick will tell you he did not become a legit NFL QB until he was under Reid.

BTW Vick arm is much better than LJ as well.

Megatron96
11-23-2019, 07:08 PM
Vick was faster (according to his 40 time) and had a better arm than Lamar. However, Vick didn't have the advantage of a great mentor in a QB coach/OC.

John Harbaugh is pretty good for Jackson in that respect. And while Lamar doesn't have a cannon for an arm, he does have above-average NFL arm strength, and has shown signs of advanced level accuracy when he throws over the top, instead of sidearm.

And Lamar isn't going to be running his entire career. I don't know why people think he's going to be running 15-20 times a game for the next ten years. From last year (17+ times a game) he's already down to about 12 rushes a game. Based on what he's been saying, he's going to be below 10 rushes/game next year. His goal is to become a pocket-passing QB that occasionally runs.

Can he have a 15+ year career running about 6-7 times a game? Maybe not. Could he have a 10-12 year career though? Maybe so.

Donovan McNabb had a 10+ year career and he came into the league as a running QB. Reid taught him how to be a pocket QB. Not a great one, but a pretty good one. And Lamar has more potential than McNabb had in his second year.

Here's a more traditional view of stuff we should be doing. Urban meyer talks about how he had a staffer watch the other coach as a tell for when they're doing a special teams fake. I can't imagine we're doing things like that. The most interesting part of the video is where belichick uses a mcvay tell to make a key play in the super bowl. In key close games these small little things can swing the game. Maybe it did for the Patriots vs the Chiefs.
