They could close them all as long as they still make that sweet heat sauce for the stores. The quality of there smoked meats has progressively gotten worse over the years. I love that sweet heat sauce though.

From what I was told after they closed up at Ameristar- was a Florida guy came through town and liked the place, so bought them out.

Once that happened- all the quality and management went downhill. The Ameristar was a pretty hopping location and excellent food at one time. I am not sure how you could mess that up so bad, it was a golden goose.

It was hit or miss. We always stayed out there when we went to Royals and Chiefs games. I don't remember how many times we went to AB but they weren't all bad. Some certainly were though.

Pretty sure there was a huge write up about the original AB location having rats, roaches and disgusting health violations. I don't think I will ever risk going there- ever.

I can buy their sauce and make my own awesome BBQ at home instead of risking some black dude wiping his ass on a rack of ribs and then serving them to me.

Back in the 70s and early 80s it was some of the best Q you could get anywhere,
went back to the original location this past year and it was not the same.
I think the new generation is lacking the passion Arthur had.
That whole neighborhood has changed. I had not been down there for 10 years and it feels safer now...................

Back in the 60's my Dad would take me to Bryants then to Municipal Stadium to watch the Chiefs. That sauce runs through my veins. Sometimes I simply LONG for a Bryant's Beef sandwich, fries and a Red Cream Soda. I get it, the sauce is love it or hate it. But, for me, it is comfort food. And all KC bbq comes from Gate's or Bryants. They both learned from the same man...then went off on their own.... But they were the ONLY gig in town.

Look, I am not a big fan of Muddy Waters, or BB King....but I understand their importance.... That. That is Gates and Arthur Bryant's. My BBQ mecca.

I went there for the first time in years a couple of weeks ago. It's nothing like the downtown location. But still probably better than half of the BBQ joints in the area. It was never busy. My guess is only when the race was in town. Out of towners don't know any better, but at least Jazz is still by there if I'm out there and get hungry

It's worth trying their burnt ends.

We went to the original location during lunch hour one time and ordered burnt ends (it was crazy busy). I don't know if they ran out and had to rush an order to keep up with the demand of the lunch rush, but they were like chewing shoe leather. You had to take a big gulp of your drink to help swallow them. I'd like to go again sometime to see if they can redeem themselves.

I've only had Bryant's once back when I still lived in KC. It was at The Station Casino back when it was still called that. Probably 99 or 2000. It was god awful. Gotta try the real thing next time I'm there.

Bryant's is so inconsistent. There have been times that I've eaten there and it's been some of the best BBQ I've ever had. Other times, it's been mediocre.

Their original sauce is gross, IMO. Sweet heat is one of my favorite sauces ever, though.

Gates and Bryant's are KC authentic and KC original. Bryant's original sauce is designed primarily for beef. It's got vinegar and paprika in it. It's tart and sour, and if you grew up eating Kraft BBQ sauce or KC Masterpiece by Clorox with 80% corn syrup in it, you're not going to like Bryant's original. For poultry and pork, their sweet hot sauce is better. The fries and cole slaw are fabulous. Ribs are excellent, turkey and brisket all plentiful and flavorful. Gates prices have gone up again. They are expensive for what you get. The mixed plate is a good deal to try a little of everything. I think their standard sauce is the best on the planet. It's what I grew up with. Fries are good if you get them crispy. Slaw not as good as Bryant's. Gates service can be spotty. Somedays its really slow and disorganized. Bryant's seems to get the orders out quicker. If you are a tourist, you must try both someday and decide which one you like better.

From Wiki: "In 1986, after ten years of success in the Kansas City area, (Rich) Davis received an offer to sell the KC Masterpiece brand to the Kingsford charcoal division of The HV Food Products Company (formally known as Hidden Valley Ranch Food Products, Inc.), which operates as a subsidiary of The Clorox Company, with an eye to marketing the sauce nationwide.

Chef I work with says that the grit in the sauce really turns him off. I could see that being a pretty major reason.

You didn't know about Clorox?

When Gary Berbiglia opened a chicken joint (Berbiglia's Roost) in OP and it failed, Gary, a former owner of Bryant's, died soon after from complications of diabetes and heart disease. Bryant's had been quietly put up for sale but there was
little or no market for Bryant's name or it's it's assets.

They are going to live out the lease with Bryant's niece's estate (BRYANT, DORETHA) and they will be selling the fixtures. Other than the sauce, the rest will be gone.

Want to lease/ buy? building? Sauce?

At some point its all about ones expectations.

20-30 years ago when I was young and just started sampling KC BBQ I thought they were all great. Now at middle age, I'm a picky ass son of a bitch. Part of the problem is that a lot of us smoke ourselves, so it's harder and harder to impress me. Now my Mom and Dad would give some boiled meat and ketchup a good review.

Same thing happened to me and steaks. Now I don't order them when I go out unless I'm at a real deal legit steakhouse. For BBQ, I order things I'm not good at or don't attempt. I'm always ordering turkey, sausage, and Burnt Ends if they are known for them.
