View Full Version : Chiefs If we could keep one player, which would you choose?

Preface: I’m not putting Wiz or Pennel as options here bc I think they can be kept at a small price. I’m also not making a poll bc that is a Rainman specially that I just can’t live up to.

Here’s the deal: we pay Pat and Jones and we find out we can squeeze one more player in the cap that cost a mid range contract. If you can bring back only one guy, who is it?

Bashaud Breeland
Reggie Ragland
Demarcus Robinson
Kendall Fuller
Emmanuel Ogbah
Anthony Sherman
Terrell Suggs

I love Jones, but I'd give him up to keep most or all of those guys.

From this list, either Ogbah or Fuller. Ogbah was really playing well before he got hurt, felt he was ascending. He’ll likely be cheap too considering the time he missed.

Ogbah

I was thinking that too, but we’d still have Okafor

Sherman isn’t going to make that much.

I'm guessing Suggs retires. I think you have to try and retain one of those corners.

Sherman will be here next year. His annual 1/1 contract

Probably Fuller or Breeland.

Sherman takes his typical cheap 1/1 deal.

Given the depth of the respective positions, my lean is toward Fuller.

I think he’s going to get better and better. Still very young.

I was all for keeping Ogbah but he ended up being capably replaced by a guy off the street and a 100 year old Suggs. Try to keep Breeland and Fuller. Secondary is tougher to replace.

I like a lot of what Breeland did, I really do. Would be more than okay with keeping him.

But let’s say the price is equal between him and Fuller. Do you want the 28 year old Breeland, or a soon to be 25 year old Fuller that can play anywhere in the secondary?

When you’re talking about a 2-3 year contract, I have more faith in Fuller to get better throughout the deal than I do Breeland.

We’ve got the following at DE:

Clark
Okafor
Kpass
Harris
Speaks

Not sure we need to re-sign Ogbah and have 6 DEs. Unless their plan is to get rid of Speaks and bring back Ogbah.

I'd take Breeland.

I expect him to be cheaper than Fuller.

The longer you wait, he only gets more expensive once the Watson’s and Prescott’s of the league get paid.

I’m on the same page. I think Fuller being able to play literally anywhere in the secondary keep his value high.

We’re thin at corner, but also a bit thin at safety with Thornhill out half the season.

Fuller is great insurance in case Matheiu gets hurt. I think Spags puts a premium on versatile DB’s. I think that helps his scheme an awful lot.

Entirely possible. His endorsement money should be extremely lucrative and even more so after the ring.

If they know the new CBA will bring even larger contracts, it may make sense to keep the band together for next season and sign a mega-deal next spring.

By then he could be looking at a 5 year - $250m deal.

It doesn't matter. Both sides make it appear they want to see the new cba, or at least have an idea of what it is going to be, before signing a contract.

Clark Hunt isn't just another owner, he's highly regarded among the league on the business side. He most likely knows what the options coming down the pipe are and if the cap excludes the QB in the new deal both sides would look like fools for signing pre cba.

If he signs before those two he needs to fire his agent. If he signs before the new CBA which is expected to greatly increase payroll he needs to fire his agent.

He is under contract until after 2020, 2021 when they confirm the 5th year option, so if he signs a mega deal this offseason and it impacts other players that can be signed then Clark needs to fire Veach.

Speaks may not be in the plans for 2020, so I'm for keeping Okafor. I didn't notice Harris enough to make an opinion. I hear what others are saying about CBs and if it comes down to that, I'm inclined to take Fuller solely based on his age. But I also hear others saying that some players may want more rings and take less cash. I guess we'll find out come March.

Fuller easily. Young, ascending player who is scheme versatile.

As someone said earlier in the thread, Watkins needs to be accounted for. I think the Chiefs have to bring him back. It was obvious how much of a drop off there is after him in the receiving corps. Mecole Hardman is nowhere near ready to be a dependable starter. Same with Robinson.

Kendall Fuller: guy is extremely versatile in the safety/nickel/corner hybrid we’ve seen New England play in their defensive backfield for years.

When we run a nickel package with him and HB out there you’ve essentially got 5 corners on the field (HB played a decent amount of corner in college), and that’s such a coverage advantage in the pass-happy NFL of today.

Tough call between these guys.

I like Breeland; his physical style of play and his willingness to tackle in the run game were what I liked about him when he first picked him up. I knew that while he'd get flagged some during the regular season for his handsy style, his type of hand-fighting was the kind of thing that wouldn't get flagged in the playoffs. Glad it worked out.

Problem is that he's 28 and he will want to get paid. And I don't blame him either. If he stays for a lesser contract, he'll miss his only window to get his big payday. If we could afford him, I'd say keep him.

Of the other choices I like Fuller or Ragland.

I like fuller for his versatility, but I also expect us to draft a CB in the first round. Possibly an interior lineman. That may make the DB argument moot. Breeland is great but if we can get an ascending rookie on a cheap deal that would be better.

Both ogbah and Okafor played great when they were healthy so I'm leaning towards one of them, especially since we wont have Suggs I'm assuming.

I’d probably go Fuller, if the cost is reasonable (which it likely won’t be)

Thornhill may not be ready at the start of camp (likely won’t) and we will need someone to play safety and Fullers versatility would give him added value in a long season/playoffs.

I’ll take the comp picks for Ogbah, Breeland, Robinson and Ragland.
