View Full Version : Chiefs Unexpected benefits of winning it all

I'm not sure I ever fully appreciated that one benefit of making it to (and winning) the Super Bowl is the incredible volume of coverage that we now have of our team. I've always been the type to watch just about every press conference and read every article I can, and the number of both has been so high that I've long ago given up on keeping up.

Add to that the various NFL Films videos, all the talking heads dissecting the game, marathons of Mahomes' best games...it's crazy how easy it is to keep the excitement going even two weeks later.

What other unexpected benefits have we seen?

One of the benefits of waiting so long as well. Today's technology gives us more than we could ever have asked for! All these mic'd up and similar type videos are just awesome.

I mean, I guess we could have won before and now...but it makes it pretty special to have it mean this much because we waited this long, and now we have a boat load of high quality content to cherish it with.

Another thing I've noticed with the little bit of garbage time I YouTube I spend watching Madden players...they're mostly playing with Chiefs or at least with Mahomes. That NEVER used to the be the case.

Used to very rare to see the Chiefs logo. Now it's all over the place. Hunt is absolutely murdering his bank account. heh

I kind of wish NFL teams had open books. It'd be fascinating to know roughly how much winning a Super Bowl does for a team's bottom line. It's got to be massive.

A correlated benefit is that I'm not hearing news about tiresome other teams that I'm sick of. So the increase in Chiefs coverage has a double benefit of replacing sickening coverage with delightful coverage.

Since winning the SB:

My dick got bigger.

My beard has grown fuller.

My turds have been perfect, light brown cylinders with a cute little pinch off at the end.

My bench press has improved.

My 40 yard dash is now just a hair under 4.22, which is a .04 improvement.

My wife's ass and tits got bigger.

My car got faster

And somehow my bank account grew.

Not only is there a lot more media coverage, it's a lot more positive.

For years it seemed like anytime there was any video of the Chiefs online or TV it was almost always showing how another team made a good play. The Chiefs were the team that got scored on, or had thrown an interception, or any number of ways that would emphasize how good the OTHER team was.

Not now! We're the champs and everybody has jumped on the train.

We basically are playing with house money for the offseason.

The focus now is on paying our own, and not hoping that the front office goes out and makes a splash in free agency that might get us over the hump.

We can sit back, play the field, and just make the most sound decisions for the team without needing a big splurge to try to get the fans excited, and finally win a title.

This will be the first offseason in now 28 years where i will just enjoy watching the process, and just seeing who we bring in without having a meltdown.

Next seasons slate of games, im just going to enjoy the show. We did it. I saw them win it all. Like Pat said. Ill talk about it forever.

We are gonna lose some pieces, and have some challenges, but right now, we are playimg with house money.

I think we see a savage Reid and Mahomes next year that are playing without any pressure, we could really be in for a fireworks show next year.

I agree with all of that.

Furthermore, I believe that the combination of a Super Bowl win, Patrick Mahomes Andy the additional coverage and thereby marketability of players in KC, will make it an attractive FA destination.

I'm not quite sure how to articulate it, but I guess the overall closure of the achievement.

In every Chiefs season of the past in my lifetime, we'd end the season and I'd always look back on it with some sort of sadness. We didn't win the chip so it wasn't the outcome we were ultimately hoping for.

But now, any time I think of the Chiefs I immediately think about how we're Super Bowl champs. It's a great feeling of.. relief? I don't know. Tough to explain. Like we reached the top finally and no one can take that from us.

After every ugly loss during Germs years, I always wore my gear the next day.
To me it was always, “ yeah, my team sucks, but there’s next year.”
Said with hope of a new manger/gm, etc.

After that 1st preseason game with Herm as HC and Solari the new OC. Solari came out firing, that’s how Vermeil and CP built the offense.
Then in the presser, Germ says “that shits gonna stop. We’re a running team now.”
And promptly run the piss outta LJ, lol.
The losses just started piling up.

I have noticed the number of triggered/concerned/anxious/scared losers has now expanded past Patriots fans to a much larger group of a-holes. Tell me if you've heard any of these in the past few weeks...

"The NFL made sure their golden boy won his first super bowl."

"The NFL instructed the refs before hand to do everything they could to make sure the Chiefs won..."

"Not a single holding call...."

"Bosa was being held..."

Non-football related shots at Tyreek

Non-football related shots at Mahomes' girl and brother

This right here.

I’ve got a buddy who is one of those STL first motherfuckers (314!). He has been trying to talk shit about Mahomes since about Game 3 of the 2018 season. He’s in Columbia and can’t handle being surrounded by confident fans of a team he doesn’t follow, go figure).

He kept trying to find ways to pump the brakes. Nothing left for him now.

Mahomes needs to show more? He’s literally done things never done before and has a ring to show for it (as well as MVP and SB MVP).

Andy Reid will choke? Nope.

Chiefs will lose 1st playoff game? Hahaha.

Chiefs suck in the playoffs. Literally now 4-1 in the playoffs with Mahomes, with the lone loss coming in OT against the eventual SB champs and Mahomes never getting a chance to touch the ball.

Nothing shuts up your critics like success.I remember the talk on TV/podcasts that Mahomes couldn't win the "big" games because he lost at NE/Rams/in the AFCCG. Some are just "hot takes" BS but some really believe that crap.

You still hear them say..... welll in the SB he wasn't very good in the first 3 quarters.....he sucked for a good portion of all the playoff games. 3 straight games of comebacks to win it all because of him and still doesn't get universal respect.

I think it's a newfound appreciation for just how friggen hard it is to get one of these things.

Think of how many times the Chiefs were one play made/not made away from losing that game. There are probably 5 different plays that HAD to be made or the Chiefs lose. And a couple more that the 49ers just missed on that could've done it. And some that just get lost in the wash like when Nnadi fights a block off to hold Mostert to 5 on the drive where Jones batted the pass down. If Nnadi can't get back up and minimize damage there, the entire drive changes if Mostert pops for 13. And none of that's even getting into the STs tackle made by a guy many would have cut that changed everything against Texas. Or the dead-leg from Mahomes to get to the edge against TN and take their soul.

And all of that was a culmination of a hundred different things that were done that simply don't happen that often. It took a FA signing that worked out better than virtually ANY big money FA signings work out. It took Kelce signing an extension a year earlier than he needed to instead of chasing every dime he could. It took Pennel off the scrap heap and Matt Moore playing his ass off after coaching high school ball. It took a GM that said 'fuck value, I'm pushing my chips in...' on the Frank Clark deal. It took a wild come back against Detroit and Breeland Speaks knocking a ball down in the end zone in Foxborough. It took a loss in TN that gave us Suggs on waivers and another vs Indianapolis that created an angry Landlord who took his teammates to task. It took Fitzmagic.

And of course beyond all that it took Patrick Mahomes playing on a contract that pays him 10% of his true value and Jones playing on a 2nd rounders deal. It took a couple of big-time coaching coups to get Daly and House in here when they were among the most sought after assistants in the league (huge credit to Reid for hiring Spags when that wasn't a slam-dunk choice and huge credit to Spags for closing the deal on those assistants).

So many damn things had to happen for this and in real-time you lose track of a lot of them. Even now I'm probably missing a half dozen more critical decisions that vanish to history shortly after they're made. But when you spend 2 weeks devouring all things Chiefs-related, you essentially do one of those old-school 'cram before a test' sessions on the last 12 months of Chiefs football (let alone everything that's happened in the Reid era) and it comes into sharp focus what a monumentally difficult task this was and how impressive everyone involved had to be.

You see other teams win and think to yourself "Man, if we just had Tom Brady we'd be golden..." and sure, that helps a LOT. Of course they don't do this without Mahomes. But it took a ton more than just having Patrick Mahomes on this squad. The afterglow, and being part of it, gives you the perspective to really appreciate everything that went into making it happen.

That's been the most unexpected part of all this for me. Finally knowing what the finish line looks like and using that perspective to analyze everything that had to happen to get there has given me a far greater appreciation of why so many teams go so long without winning one of these - many of them truly excellent teams being led by smart men making sound decisions. This shit's hard. I just don't think you can fully realize that until you finally see it accomplished.

I remember the talk on TV/podcasts that Mahomes couldn't win the "big" games because he lost at NE/Rams/in the AFCCG.

This! Mahomes is held to a different standard. After falling short in overtime- it was- "Mahomes can't beat Brady". Then he does. Then it is, "He has never won an SB"- mission accomplished.

Now its- "Well, he got lucky at the end".

Even when he threw for 5,000 yards and 50 TD's- lots of critics wanted to give the MVP to Brees.

Watched the hour-long mic'd up again yesterday. The part with Dirty Dan and his little daughter in the confetti gets me every time. Tears of joy.

Oh, that’s the one that gets me, too. Something about her tackling him is just perfect and touching.

Some of it is they need SOMETHING to say. The truth - he’s the best now and is going to best the best for the next decade - isn’t super exciting to talk about.

That whole “didn’t play well in first 3 quarters thing” is also a garbage, lazy take. He played well in the first half - 4 possessions, drove them on 3, scored on 2, 4th blown up by a great defensive play on 2nd down.

Pretty much how Boston fans felt after they traded away Babe Ruth.

Lots of talk of Tribisky being on a short leash. It will be interesting if he makes it through the year as the starter.

I think it would be funny that if they dump Tribisky that he finds great success with another team like Vikings and beat the Bears twice a year.

Chiefs pick him up as a backup, develope him and flip him for a first rounder.

The reluctant silence from previously loudmouth, sh*t-talking coworkers. I live in Los Angeles so plenty of AFC West rival fans and 49ers fans at two workplaces, including a warehouse environment. So the utter quiet has been phenomenal.

I think he'd probably do better on another team. That second overall pick pressure would be gone.

Poor bastard never should have been picked that high. By all accounts he's a good kid; he just simply doesn't have the skills to match Pace's stupidity.

On average, each team has about a 3% chance of winning the Super Bowl each year. The better teams might bump their odds up to more like 10-15%, and the great teams might bump it up to more like 20%, but that's really about as good as it gets. It ALWAYS requires a lot of things going your way. That's part of why the Patriots have been so astounding in the past 20 years.

My hope is that this win will at least allow Chiefs fans to enjoy the game for what it is and turn loose of some of the angst we've carried for most of our lifetimes. I really hope that we get back here a dozen times in Mahomes career, but as long as we're always in contention and Mahomes continues to do things that amaze us, I'll be satisfied.

Exactly, obviously the destination is the Super Bowl, but the journey really is the most important part to enjoying football because the journey is years of memories with the destination being a brief experience and then once again, your back on the journey with that experience as a distant memory.

Reminded me of a few of those playoff and World Series games on the way to winning it all.

Then it was all over. Not so for the Chiefs.

Always love your posts.

Agree, there are about a dozen teams I would give essentially zero chance of winning it next year, including the donkeys. I'd give the Chiefs about a 40 percent chance to get there again, and 20 percent to win again. I believe that's about consistent with Vegas odds. Because Mahomes. The donkeys have outstanding odds to sink to last place while celebrating a single win during Drewcember.

I went to the big supercross race in Dallas, I left my normal JGR/Suzuki shirt at home in favor of my LIV championship shirt. It felt great to strut around Jerry's world in it. I also saw several other people in Chiefs gear and high fived two of them.

ROFL ROFL - Curb Your Enthusiasm this week. One of Larry's golfing buddies commits suicide because he can't take the letdowns of the Jets anymore, then Larry ruins a sure thing with the 'magical vagina' of the widow because he can't get the Jets failures out of his own mind. . . .

Thank Patrick we don't have NFL failure standing between us and magical vagina anymore!!

Last weekend I was lounging on my couch and I wanted a movie for background noise. I clicked through the options and found a free movie called "Gridiron Gang", starring Dwayne Johnson. It was about a juvenile detention facility that starts up a football team.

It was actually a pretty good movie. The plot was obvious and not a surprise, but the surprise to me was about the Chiefs.

At the end of the movie, the kids' team is driving to win the game, and the running back gets a good block and breaks free down the right sideline. While it was the opposite sideline, I immediately had a vivid flashback of Damien Williams bursting down the left sideline to seal the game. It was as if I was watching the Chiefs' Super Bowl win all over again as that kid scored the winning touchdown. And the beautiful thing is that I'll probably do that for the rest of my life when I watch a football movie.
