Frivolous entertainment and leisure are often the hardest hit in crises like this.
Goods can rebound on a timeline. People hoard, then consume then replenish after the crisis.
Entertainment, you go without it for a bit and a lot of people realize that it's not that much of a necessity and just keep abstaining after the crisis.

One person gets it so you shut the whole thing down? Really?

It’s more from the fact that everyone he played against will have to quarantine and get tested now - including opposing coaching staffs and anyone with locker room access. This disrupts in the league where any immediate games in the schedule would have been untenable to play regardless.

Any commissioner would have done this immediately after a player caught this virus. Silver isn't special. He had no choice. The schedule would have been affected for weeks for at least the Jazz (who may have others test positive) and possibly others (who the Jazz have played in past few weeks).

So did the 2009 Swine Flu pandemic (the most recent officially classified pandemic until COVID-19) and society didn’t overreact and shut down like this.

Also LeBron James was among several NBA players who tested positive for the Swine Flu in 2009, yet the NBA continued with its games.

You, and many others, are still failing to understand the incubation period on this thing. The swine flu had an incubation period of like 2 days. This thing it's like 5 days to 2 weeks. That's enormous.

That is 100% why this is different than all these other viruses and diseases that people keep comparing it to. We aren't all going to die and there's no reason to panic, but this thing has no treatment and you can have it for a week or more and spread it around and not know it. The only way to stop it is to keep people away from other people.

Look at the Gobert thing. It's not like you just have to worry about the Thunder, who they were going to play tonight. Every single team, coach and official the Jazz has played the last two weeks may have been exposed to this, and are now possibly contagious and able to spread it to people they've also played against.

I haven't done the math, but with one single person it's theoretically possible the majority of the league has been exposed to the virus. A virus no one has immunity to.

Exactly and the more it spreads the more people will die. There is no vaccine so you are relying on the immune system to beat it. There's no guarantee even for a healthy individual although obviously cases of healthy ppl dying from it are rare but it has happened.

There was no vaccine during the first six months of the Swine Flu pandemic.

I am not saying there isn’t legit concern about the threat of COVID-19, but it is unclear why the reaction to COVID-19 is way more intense than the public response to the Swine Flu pandemic in 2009-2010.

The Swine Flu was actually way more deadly among younger people than COVID-19 currently is.

Nearly 13,000 Americans died from the Swine Flu pandemic yet the public hysteria never approached what we are seeing now with COVID-19.

Are you so confident that this won't dwarf the swine flu outbreak that you don't think precautions are wise? I know it's preliminary, but this thing seems to kill far more people than swine flu. It seems perfectly reasonable that far more than 13k people will die from this if nothing is done.

Wrong. It was food poisoning.

“So we order a pizza, they come to deliver it, five guys come to deliver this pizza. And I’m just … I take the pizza, and I tell them, I said, ‘I got a bad feeling about this.’ I said, ‘I just got a bad feeling about this.’ Out of everybody in the room, he was the only one that ate. Nobody else … then 2 o’clock in the morning, I get a call to my room. I come to the room, he’s curled up, he’s curled up in the fetal position. We’re looking at him. We’re finding the team physician at that time. And immediately I said, ‘It’s food poisoning.’ Guaranteed. Not the flu.” -Tim Grover, Chicago Sun Times April 18, 2013

The thought process seems to be that it’s not so bad because it doesn’t kill many or any young people — it’s like some people could give zero fucks about anyone over 65. It’s killing like 15% of those who are 80+ so far.

So you think nobody should be doing anything about it and just let it spread? What's your endgame? We shouldn't try to contain it? I don't understand the logic behind these kinds of posts.

This thing has been around 3 months and is just starting to make it's way around the world. How do you know it won't kill more than the typical flu? It might not, but it might. We don't know. There is zero reason to panic and go buy a bunch of toilet paper. But why should you just throw your hands up and not try to contain it?

And that doesn't even get into the herd immunity issue.

Dude **** the flu and the flu vaccinne. I get the flu shot every year and I had the flu this year worse than I have had it in years. It's also one of the worse flu seasons we have had.

Influenza killed almost 62,000 people in 2018. This virus is no where close to that.

If we use your logic we might as well shut down everything every time someone get the ****ing flu.

You probably had a cold.
Knowing you and your propensity for overreaction, it was probably a mild 24-hour sniffle.
WORST FLU EVER/pete

If as many people get Corona as there is that get Influenza each year, it might kill 500,000+ based on percentages.

Based on what I've read and the physicians with whom I've spoken, this claim is inconsistent with the relevant, available information on the subject.

I honestly hope you are right but when I read stuff like this it doesn't make me gain much confidence in that

"So what are the differences between coronavirus and the flu? For starters, there is no vaccine for COVID-19 and it could take many months or years to get one to market, and, unlike the influenza viruses for which there are several vaccines, humans have not built up an immunity over multiple generations. What’s worse, doctors fear the virus will mutate."

Dear Sir Fax,

Have you read the latest information? Would you consider the opinion of the US government's top disease expert?

Coronavirus 10 times more lethal than seasonal flu, top health official says
(https://thehill.com/changing-america/well-being/prevention-cures/487086-coronavirus-10-times-more-lethal-than-seasonal)
The federal government’s top infectious disease expert told lawmakers Wednesday that the novel coronavirus spreading across the globe is 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.

“I mean people always say, 'Well, the flu does this, the flu does that,'” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said Wednesday during a hearing before the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

“The flu has a mortality rate of 0.1 percent. This has a mortality rate of 10 times that. That’s the reason I want to emphasize we have to stay ahead of the game in preventing this,” he added.

A great deal of the available data is coming from countries outside the US ... including China.

One shouldn't ignore that information, but it ought to be evaluated in context. For example, not only was China completely unprepared for the outbreak, once they discovered what they were dealing with, they botched their response in a variety of ways. It's reasonable to speculate that their data skews the problem negatively. It's also a reality that the US health care system is meaningfully superior to China's.

When it comes to America, at this point in time I'm more concerned with the effects of panic than the bug itself.

Have they shut down the league like this before? I remember a time in the 90’s when all those aliens stole the talent from the players and they shut down for a little while but this is just crazy! The players still have their talents, right?

if there was no vaccine for influenza they probably would use similar precautions, they quarantine wards in hospitals and old age homes all the time for it. there are plenty of viruses out there who can give you flu like symptoms , if you specifically got tested for influenza and had it then your shot lessened the severity of it, but it is not an option for corona at this time.

The problem here is that the hysteria is spreading faster than the virus itself. No one's allowed to err on the side of non-hysterical or they'll get trashed by the herd.

If this continues at its current pace, the entire country/economy will shut down. It's much the same when the housing bubble happened. They swung around so hard on not lending that the market took twice as long to recover.

I get that it's a bad ass virus, but what can really be done about it? Really? The more we worry about it, the worse we'll be off in the long run. Chances are, we're all going to get it eventually. And chances are, we won't even know we have it.

As far as testing goes, this is a farce too. Where would we get 330 million kits? And even if we had an antidote, how long will it take to produce enough? You can get tested today and get the virus tomorrow!

I say carry on as normal. I know many will disagree but that's my take. If we continue on like this, everyone of us will be unemployed. It's stupid.
