Didn’t they only go 10-6 that year? It’s funny how they were looked at as this looming power despite very little overall sustained success in that era.

The truth is there aren’t that many great QB’s out there for the taking so guys like Tannehill get big contracts.

Unless you draft a QB that’s the type of guy you can expect to sign in FA, so you may as well hang onto them.

Probably but also probably not going to ever get them closer than they got last season.

As Chiefs' fans we've seen this movie before. In fact we watched every sequel to this move. It's freaky living down here in the Nashville area watching the Tits morph into the 90's Chiefs, strong run game, solid defense, and a QB that's just good enough to not lose every game.

What were their options?

Not every team can be blessed with a Mahomes. You have to have maintain a certain level of success even if you know it’s not the top level. The Chiefs did a similar thing with Alex Smith.

Let’s be realistic. Going 10-6 or 11-5 every year and making the playoffs is better for your bottom line than losing 10-11 games each year.

I get the discomfort of paying him that much but I think the alternative has to be brought into question. What was it?

If they’re keeping Henry and planning to run their offense through him, it’s a short window anyways. May as well keep the QB that you know can excel in that system.

Point being, I’m not sure any other option gives them a better chance in the next 2 seasons to win.

True, he’s just not that guy... but they’re not asking him to do that, and not many teams can shut Henry down

The money is definitely absurd, but he took them pretty deep in the playoffs in his first partial year ... that’s about as good as it can get for them right now

Honestly, I can really see him going to the Bucs because it doesn’t sound like the Pats badly want him back while the Bucs are reportedly ready to do whatever it takes and already have the weapons to make him happy.

pugsnotdrugs19
03-15-2020, 04:17 PM
They certainly could do better but many teams feel that way. My view is that Tennessee Ryan Tannehill and Miami Tannehill are not the same. His scheme fit is so much better now.

They went 9-4 with him and won 2 huge playoff games, they had a real shot against KC. With Henry and their OL running the show, they just need a tough, accurate passer who has enough athletic ability to get out of a bind whenever there’s a leak in their PA pass protections. Tannehill checks the boxes.

03-15-2020, 04:39 PM
I think they can win games with him... but he really needed the playaction off of Henry to be successful. He was legit great when they got their running game going and he could throw deep bombs off of it. If you stop Henry though, he's gonna have a hard time.

Red Dawg
03-15-2020, 04:43 PM
Winning the SB with Tanny would be like Dilfer or Mannings last one. The team must win without him helping much.

Gravedigger
03-15-2020, 04:47 PM
Sad really, if you think Ryan Tannehill is worth almost $30 million per year for four years... all Ryan Tannehill needs is one under-performing/injury year to make that contract a mistake, hopefully they'll make the playoffs next year or it'll start quickly and people will be calling for some heads to roll in that town because they over-performed this year to give them false hope.

It's interesting to me to watch other teams do the same thing that the Chiefs have done since well, forever. Maybe these teams know something that I don't; that they can take the trash of another team and turn it into treasure. It might work out well this year for them; they have a 2nd place schedule.

I don't really care; it's not my money. Now, the 17 game season and 7 game playoffs just sounds dumb.

BWillie
03-15-2020, 06:44 PM
Alot smarter than signing Tom Brady, who I believe is not even a Top 25 QB anymore but it's also not a good idea to strap yourself to an avg QB for 29M a year. Draft another one until you succeed.

Because Mariota's ceiling is Alex Smith under Andy Reid's coaching. Mariota is so afraid of making a mistake that he became ineffective as an NFL QB.

If you already have a team built then it makes sense to keep your slightly above average QB. Drafting a QB now, assuming they keep Henry while in his prime, would waste him. It was either this or tear it all down and start over.
