Stirling Moss died yesterday at the age of 90. Considered the best race car driver who never won the Formula 1 championship, he was best known for winning the Mille Miglia in 1955, considered by many as the greatest motor racing triumph ever.

The race covered approximately 1000 miles (hence the name) throughout Italy's mountainous, curving roads. Drivers were able to take a second person in the car and were able to scout the route ahead of time. Moss and his passenger, journalist Denis Jenkinson, created a system of cards that outlined the road ahead - curve, town, etc., - with notes on how to approach them. They needed the notes because they could not hear over the roar of the engine. Moss won in just over 10 hours, averaging almost 100 mph in a 300SLR Mercedes. 2 years after Moss' victory, Italian authorities banned the race because in 24 runnings of the race, 70 people had died - racers, co-drivers and spectators.

An incredible driver, he ranks with Juan Fangio, Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart as trailblazers of motorsport.
