View Full Version : Football Clowney lowers asking price

from 20m per to 17/18m per

If Clowney's asking price continues to drop will it affect Chris Jones' contract?

ThyKingdomCome15

17-18 is Dee Ford money. But with his injury history its buyer be ware. I don't think he's gonna get even that much. 14 mil a year is his price tag, Robert Quin money.

If I'm Russell Wilson he's letting it be known they need a pass rusher so make it happen, if he/$$$$ can help out within reason, cool.

Which makes you wonder if that Buckner contract was a legitimate chess move by Ballard to inflate the market for Jones and make it nearly impossible for a long term deal to get done. No way Buckner is worth that much, but forcing the top team in the conference into tougher salary decisions is probably worth some wasted millions to other teams. Hope Veach pulls off a better move and makes him look like an idiot.

No, a GM isn't going to pay his player 5m per year too much just to mess with another team. He might structure a contract weird to keep another team from matching it but that's about it. jmo.

When we need somebody, we'll sign somebody. How about that?

We probably don't need Clowney. And if we did need Clowney, ten bucks says Veach comes up with an alternative that's much cheaper and probably a better fit for us.

Must we bring up how we needed Jalen Ramsey or else everybody would die?

That's basically it.

Dude killed it for a few games in college, achieved top-of-the-draft status, then mailed it in. As a pro, he's been inconsistent at best. Hell, Dee Ford came from that same draft. Has he even played in as many games as Ford or produced as much as him?

Honestly, fuck Clowney. The old Chiefs used to go gaga over "BUT TEH POTENSHUUUUL" guys like him. The new Chiefs don't have time for losers like Clowney. Either you're good or you're not, and if you're not, you better be fucking cheap.

While I agree with this, I can understand Spags' interest (if there really is any interest). With the Giants, he had those four pass rushers that basically won them the Super Bowl, and Clowney lined up next to Jones and Clark would be a force.

We did fine with "just enough" at that other DE spot all year. Hell, Ogbah led the team in sacks for the first several games of the season. He was averaging 1 or 2 per game until he got hurt.

Okafor was fine as well. Did about what we expected him to do. And obviously after that, we had Suggs.

I'm fine with Okafor if he stays healthy. And in the event he's hurt, it's not like we don't have options. Spags is constantly rotating linemen as it is, and I'd like to see Jones get some more snaps at end on early downs.

We have enough talent. We'll be fine.

Pickens are getting slim- but there are a few guys that could fit our budget.

Some guys that pop out a bit to me and fit some injury spots are:

Josh Kline - G/C flexibility and would likely be a starter. Actually preferred him before the Osemele signing.
Marshall Newhouse - T/G flexibility but nothing but a backup
Tavon Wilson - SS/FS flexibility and better than what the Chiefs have as reserves now. Indy bringing him in for a look today though.

I don’t think he’s bad, just over hyped and oft injured. A one year deal for that kind of money is probably about what he’s worth. So I don’t think it’s a terrible signing at all for whomever ends up getting him at that price.

Well if they can run the ball like they did last year, Tannehill doesn't need to be a baller in every game except in very close games. And his confidence factor I'm sure is a lot higher this year which makes a huge difference. ;)

I'm just not convinced that Henry can be as dominant as he was down the stretch last year and if he's not, that puts more pressure on Tannehill. The guy had an unreal year in terms of protecting the ball. A couple more turnovers here or there and they might not even make the playoffs the way they play.

OH they can't beat US. But I like them more than some teams people love to pump up like Pittsburgh or Indy

I think Pittsburgh has a better chance of improving than Tennessee does of repeating what they did last year.

Don't get me wrong, nobody in the AFC is "scary" but Tennessee in many ways caught lightning in a bottle last year. I really don't see what people see in the Colts either. They're built to play Martyball with a QB that doesn't know how to protect the football.

Everybody expects Baltimore to be the main contender but I just don't see it. Then had the 2nd best continuity rating in the league last year (meaning they had the 2nd fewest plays lost to injury), they've had turnover on defense and Lamar Jackson is, well, Lamar Jackson.

The AFC is prime for some change and I just think that team is Pittsburgh this year.

kccrow
09-06-2020, 08:11 AM
Pittsburgh with Big Ben is a handful so I never write them off when he's healthy. With him looking, possibly, at his last season you know he's going to ball out.

I don't think the Titans have a sustainable format there. Without Henry being insane, they don't sniff the playoffs. It's rare a RB puts up back-to-back years like he just had.

I think Indy is a team to look out for. Rivers might shit the bed often enough, but he's far more than good enough to make that team contend for a playoff spot and way better of a QB than Brisett. That's a team that beat us with as shitty a performance from a QB as you can have. They added Jonathan Taylor to committee with Mack and Michael Pittman at WR, so they have some talent on offense now. Adding Buckner to that pass rush was huge. They were already a good team against the run, but relatively poor against the pass. If adding Xavier Rhodes and TJ Carrie to go with Buckner turns that pass defense around, I'd say look out. They were 7-9 and Tennessee was 9-7. Not hard to fathom that switching around. And who's to say the Texans are going to stay atop that division? Watson is a good QB and that defense has some solid pieces, but they aren't that good. Giving away their top WR could prove a really bad move.

This is actually pretty neat. Saints were trying to pull a sign and trade.

According to sources informed of the talks, the Saints didn’t feel they could compete financially with the Titans’ offer – $12 million, plus $3 million in incentives – given budgetary reasons. So, they approached another team to find a workaround. (Sources didn’t confirm the other team, which hereafter is referred to as “Team X”, but it is believed to be the Cleveland Browns, who have ample cap space and a front office known for having a propensity for creativity, most memorably on display in their 2016 trade for quarterback Brock Osweiler.)

The sides discussed parameters of a deal in which Team X would’ve signed Clowney to a one-year, $15 million contract and paid him a $5 million signing bonus. Then, Team X would’ve immediately traded Clowney to the Saints, who would’ve sent Team X a second-round draft pick, as well as a player to take additional salary off New Orleans’ books. The Saints would’ve paid Clowney’s remaining $10 million salary.

The nfl allowing this would of opened up some power for nfl teams on free agents. Sad it was nixed.
