Solid. I said in the draft thread we should be on the phone with this kid the second the draft ends. Can't believe he went undrafted. Not the most athletic-looking body type, but he's fast enough and he makes plays. We'll see if that translates against the best in the world, but he's been playing in the SEC and that's the next best thing. I wouldn't be against him. Great pickup imo. I mocked him to us in the 5th in a lot of simulations.

2 Punters beginning to think this team is looking to move on from Dustin.

Colquitt will be 38 in a few weeks and I'm sure the Chiefs will start planning for their future sooner rather than later.

He's only under contract for this season and the Chiefs would save $2 million by cutting him but unless they hit on a guy, I think he'll be aroune for one last dance.

Or not.

https://draftwire.usatoday.com/2020/04/03/nfl-draft-prospects-2020-javaris-davis-auburn-interview/

Javaris Davis, CB Auburn

JM: You made your rounds through the all-star circuit. You were invited to both the Senior Bowl and the East-West Shrine Game. What was the experience like?

JD: It was a great experience. It gave me an opportunity to compete with some of the best athletes in the nation. I was thankful for the opportunity. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me and one that I’ll forever cherish. I feel like I made the most of the opportunity. I had a lot of fun. I met with some NFL coaches and general managers. I’m excited to be on this journey. I’m just getting started.

JM: You come from a bit of a football family. You’re cousins with both Vontae and Vernon Davis. What’s the best advice they’ve ever given you?

JD: They taught me to stay grounded. They taught me the value of hard work. They basically told me to never take a day off. It’s all about consistency. That goes for both football and everyday life. They make sure that I remain consistent.

[B]JM: You lit up the 40-yard dash at the combine with an official time of 4.39. How did you enjoy the combine?

JD: It was a long process, but as long as you trust the process, you’re gonna be just fine. That’s how I looked at it. I met so many NFL coaches and general managers down there as well. Having those meetings with some NFL personnel was a great experience for me. A lot of collegiate athletes don’t get a chance to go to the combine. I’m just blessed to have had the experience at my age.

[B]JM: Did you have a lot of formal or informal interviews out there?

JD: I did. I had a lot of formals actually. I met formally with the Colts, Cowboys, Giants, Falcons and Rams. I enjoyed all of those meetings.

JM: Which teams were you supposed to meet with?

JD: I was supposed to meet with the Jets, Dolphins, Patriots, Lions, Ravens, Chiefs and Raiders. We’ll see what happens. I had a full schedule but the COVID-19 has obviously had it’s impact. Everything is up in the air right now. I’m thankful to all of the teams for showing interest in me.

JM: You’ve been called “undersized” in the past. How do you respond?

JD: It really doesn’t offend me. God made me the size that I am, and I’ve seen plenty of players with similar body types to mine go on and be very successful at the next level. It just adds more fuel to the fire. You can put on the tape and see that my size didn’t matter at all. I’ve played cornerback on the outside, nickelback and free safety. My size didn’t matter at any of those positions. Being so versatile has put me in match-ups with guys that are bigger than me and size was never the determining factor in those reps.

Nickel is my favorite position anyways. That’s where most of these NFL teams see me playing at. It allows me to use my ability and my instincts to make a lot of plays. I can play outside if that’s where they need me to play. I can play special teams as well.

JM: How do you cover a bigger receiver differently than you would a smaller one?

JD: There’s a lot that goes into it. I love watching film. What the film tells me will ultimately be the biggest factor in determining how I’m gonna approach covering this guy. Receivers come in all shapes and sizes. I pay close attention to their releases. Some of these receivers are one-dimensional. Some of them are great at this one thing but I can gain the upper hand by taking that one thing away. That’s how you can throw a blanket on their entire game.

The really big receivers want you to be physical with them. They just wanna use their size to bully you. They lean on their physicality. I try to give them a little cushion. I basically let them come to me. You have to be patient. You gotta play through their hands. You have to trust what you see. Read-and-react.

JM: What kind of player is Javaris Davis going to be at the next level?

JD: I’m gonna be a play-maker in every sense of the word. I’m gonna be a leader. I’m a team-first kinda guy. I’m trying to win a Super Bowl. That’s the ultimate goal right there. I’m gonna do whatever my team needs me to do. I’m gonna remain consistent. You know what you’re getting in me. I’m always the same guy. What you see is what you get both on and off the field. I’m excited for what’s ahead.

Broke Larry Fitzgerald’s single season receptions record at Pitt. This dude is dangerous in the open field.

Would imagine the storyline same as CEH, your to small to play CB.
Should come in trying prove others were wrong.
KR/PR/DB, special teams anything to make the team , wish em well.

I do wish him well.

I was just answering the question of “how did this guy go undrafted”

I have no negative feedback for the front office right now

im glad that a talented kid that just by accident of nature is a little short will get a chance

Maurice Ffrench - 5'11/200 - Pitt

Ffrench burst on the scene upon Pitt OC Mark Whipple's arrival on campus fresh off his tenure as HC of UMass. Ffrench was utilized in the same manner as 2019 second-round pick Andy Isabella, breaking Larry Fitzgerald's single-season receptions record by catching 96 passes for 850 yards and four touchdowns for the Panthers. Pitt moved him all around the formation but he really shined when working the underneath-to-intermediate routes as his fast-twitch cutting ability made him a terror for opposing corners to stay with, avoiding 22 tackles and posting 41 receptions that resulted in a first down last season.

Ffrench ran a 4.4 last summer and has shown the ability to make tough catches in traffic, earning a well above average 82.3 hands grade by PFF. He is a very good punt/kick returner who will likely use his special teams contributions as a gateway to a roster spot at the next level.

Though elusive in space Ffrench doesn't show long-speed on tape and isn't comfortable tracking deep balls, catching only 2-of-12 passes 20+ yards down the field. He had ample success working out of the slot but lacks the outside skills to be a downfield threat along the sideline despite his speed. His 96 receptions are primarily due to scheme as his 8.8 YPC project Ffrench as a possession receiver and return specialist for NFL purposes. His pro day testing will determine whether or not Ffrench will be selected on Day 3 or if he will need to go the UDFA route.

This kid destroyed previous undefeated UCF. 4.4 speed could make the roster this year.

Well, my opinion is Colquitt should have been cut 3 years ago so you might be asking the wrong guy about a punter. They did bring in Tyler Newsome already and they added this guy as an UDFA, where I prefer a punter come from. Townsend is a very good punter and I'm surprised he wasn't drafted to be honest. Save that couple million were spending on Colquitt and keep this kid.

I like him in that situation. Statistically, he had 24 and 20 punts inside the 20 the past 2 seasons. 44.8 average, 40.9 net over those 2 years on 93 punts. Went from 15 returns for 129 yards in 2018 down to 7 returns for 9 yards in 2019.

I've lost it at this point, but I read a tweet from someone over the weekend that was hypothesizing that the Chiefs avoiding CBs early may have less to do with a lack of good options at their picks and more to do with confidence that Spags and his staff can coach up guys with raw talent to fit the scheme (as we saw last year). I think the distribution you're seeing here supports that.

Yea, there’s definitely a pattern here. The Chiefs are clearly comfortable going to the bargain bin for their corners.

That’s not to say there won’t take a guy early, they just won’t force themselves into it and there’s no denying the CB board hasn’t worked out for us the past couple of years.

Sounds about right. They knew the Vikings would swipe Gladney from the Chiefs and it would have cost the uh 5th rounder to prevent that basically. They just didn't give a shit.

The Defensive coaching staff is high level, so they have every right to feel that way.

Lavert Hill is intriguing, dude had 3rd-4th round grade... “undersized at 5’11 but ultra competitive, and it consistently shows up at the catch point, where he breaks up a lot more passes than you’d expect at his size. Surprising length with 33 inch arms, typically what you’d see in a corner 4 inches taller. Likes to get up under their chinstrap at the LOS and has the quick feet to mirror. Solid in zone coverage, with good awareness and ability to close on the ball.”

The knocks talk about how he looked a bit over his head against Alabama at the citrus bowl against Jeudy and Smith... but hey that’s why we have coaches, I’d expect him to make the PS at a minimum

As of today, it looks to me like it'll be CEH, Damien Williams, DeAndre Washington and Anthony Sherman.

I can see the possibility of adding another young guy this summer and especially to the 12 man Practice Squad, but they've got a pretty nice room at the moment.

In spite of Darwin Thompson being pretty stupid, I still think he has a decent chance of clinging on and making the team. He DID look kind of shifty between the tackles, and I really like how he can squeeze through tiny holes and get positive yards where he might otherwise be stopped at the line.

Gonna have to learn the plays though. Was almost embarrassed for him when he didn't know to turn his head the fuck around on the hot route in the Tennessee playoff game, and Mahomes' pass hit in in the back of the head. And of course, he apparently still doesn't know the rules for forward progress on fumbles.

Would be curious to know his Wonderlic score. Jamaal Charles apparently had a disability, but he never let that get in the way of his production or being a great NFL player. Hell, in just a couple of seasons he was pretty much running routes and taking on more responsibilities per play than just about every guy on the team other than the QB.

What the hell is Darwin's problem?

I was actually encouraging. I said I think he has an okay chance to make the roster, but he's got to really commit himself to the small details and being far more aware on the field.

With a healthy Darrell Williams and now this Texas Tech guy, the backup RB depth chart isn't going to be an automatic for Darwin like it was last year. And with Astroclyde and Damien Williams taking all the important snaps, Darwin is going to be lucky to just get special teams snaps if he makes the team.

Alright I’m just now popping into this thread but I’ve seen at least 3 of our UDFAs reported to have received at least $100,000 in guarantees (which is apparently very high).

Veach seems to have dialed in on a strategy to add all of the draftable talent he possibly can. I bet they feel like they’ve acquired 10+ draft pick level players based purely on their board rankings.

Because he was a 6th round draft pick. There's only so many chairs in the RB group, and with the signing of Washington and us drafting CEH he's going to have to do something more to stand out if he wants to stick around longer.

I agree with you tbh. CEH and Damian are the clear favourites and then Washington will get a chance to become the third guy. I think we carry RB's so it could be a fight between Darwin and Darrell as to who gets the last spot although Washington might end up being like Carlos Hyde if he doesn't settle in KC and we might see both Darwin and Darrell stay.

Like I said - I think there are a lot of things that served to make the Chiefs a destination franchise for UDFAs.

I think the Keyes move indicates that Veach thought he was going to get drafted, not that he though he couldn't win a UDFA bidding situation. Players WANT to come to this franchise.

Running a 4.8 and 7.4 3-cone at 230 lbs pretty much sealed Woodward's fate. He didn't look fast on tape but was effective, probably won't translate to the pro game well.

Reportedly, Pinckney has had offers but is waiting to finish rehab to sign, probably closer to training camps.
