View Full Version : Football Should we have signed Jameis winston?

He signed with the saints for 1.1 mil with unlikely incentives that could take him up to 4.7 mil.

If he rehabs his image he'll get a chance to sign a starters job next year which would fetch the saints a comp pick. Theres little risk. Besides the risk that he might have to play and continue to be reckless.

Meanwhile we are paying chad henne 1.6 mil and also praying like hell that he doesnt have to take the field.

If they had I'd have been fine with it. If we need him I have no doubt Reid would find a way to get the "good' Jameis to show up. That said, he's kind of a knucklehead and so assuming Mahomes stays healthy would pretty much just be a liability.

That does sound like a good deal and with favorable terms. I'd take Winston over Henne in a spot start. Can't win em all. But maybe Winston agreed to those terms because he is willing to take less with hope he can supplant Brees after his retirement, where the same is not going to happen here.

Thought I explained...

For a possible comp pick if he signs a bigger deal next offseason. I think a season under Payton or reid would rehab his reputation regardless of of he ever gets on the field to play this year.

I wouldn't want him starting for us anymore than I hope henne never has to start.

The Chiefs won't need a new QB next year the Saints very well may. He's not coming here for the same money

Chiefs backup QB seems like a pretty sweet deal. Who wouldn’t want to learn from Reid and Mahomes?

He signed there because it basically a tryout for 2021.

Brees is gone next year. Why backup Mahomes he's not going anywhere.

Not sure how I feel about this signing.. He is all humble right now and signed a real prove it deal...
$148,000 signing bonus
$952,000 base salary
$1.76M playtime incentives
$1.8M playoff playtime incentives
$40,000 Pro Bowl incentive
Base $1.1M. Max $4.7M with incentives.
Maybe he just needs some real training and get away from Tampa..

That and presently we can barely fit a bag of chips under the cap. May need to save what little room we have for a late season Suggs like signing.

Brees signed a 2 year deal so it's possible he stays for both years. But yeah, I know why winston would prefer the saints. But learning from mahomes and reid has to be as tempting as doing it from Brees and payton if you take out the possible starting gig a year down the line.

But if we could have signed him for the same deal would you rather have winston or henne for half a mil more?

No. I'll have no part of any QB that threw 30 INTs, thank you.

He wouldn't be a starter for any length of time, and Andy would break him of the interception machine, anyway.

But he signed for less than what we are paying henne. It was all too late anyway because we guaranteed a big part of hennes contract at signing. But in a bubble we could have signed winston and saved half a mil.

It's an interesting concept, but would he be useful in the quarterback room each week? My impression is that Henne is mostly Mahomes' game plan assistant. I could be wrong, but I don't have the impression that Winston is that type of guy.

Edit: maybe I'm wrong. Winston got a 27 on his Wonderlic and Henne only got a 22. (Mahomes was apparently a 24 if you're interested.) So Winston would be the smartest guy in the room. I would not have guessed that based on personality.

The backup QB job here is to listen to Mahomes and help him process things during the game and in the film room. Not to be someone Mahomes has to teach or question his knowledge in any way.

Teaching someone is often a great way to see something in a new light or a new way. Or opens your eyes to something you might not have seen before.

Also playing in the same division as the team who dumped you for a washed up 43 yo qb, could have had some bearing. Chances are as Brees backup, he’ll get to play a few games.

Sure he's better than Chad Henne but you can't get in on every single upgrade available in an offseason, there are 31 other teams. Plus Chad knows the offense.

Winston threw 30 INTs, was sacked 47 times, and fumbled 12 times last season.

And the Wonderlic test is maybe one of the worst ways to measure a player's football IQ. It's basically a reading comprehension and math skills test. I took a practice Wonderlic a while ago and scored a 39. Should I be signed by the Chiefs as the starting QB?

If that test is so great, how did Winston manage to throw 30 INTs and get sacked 47 times?

Moore did a fine job all things considered.

Chiefs should have won that Packers game. But God damn that was a throw by Rodgers.

Considering how Moore performed, I’m pretty shocked he wasn’t brought back and Henne sent home

What has Henne proven here that Moore hasn’t?

Answer - Nothing

Eh. I really only asked because of the possibility of a comp pick. After having mahomes no backup is gonna be good. I figured the allure of a possible comp pick would entice more yes responses.

As others have said, I would have rather rolled with Moore anyway. At this point we are stuck with henne, so any argument is/was moot after he got 2 mil guaranteed.

Honestly don’t get Henne over Moore, at all

There must be some kinda finer points of the game type stuff fans aren’t aware of factoring in there
