Suppose you bought a Lottery Ticket when filling up with gas. You go back to your car and scratch the ticket. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner you win 150k. What’s your next move?

I think I would split it in 1/4ths, invite my kids to dinner and hand them the cash.

You probably lose close to 40% in tax and left with 90k. In that case, I’d probably pay off what debt I have, buy something nice (maybe a nice suit or a watch). Fix up my den or something for the rest.

Since it's only 90, I'd take 9 for church and charity, and the rest put into the upgrades we are already doing on the house. And I'd take the kids and grandkid out for a bad ass dinner at a swanky restaurant.

Given that timeline I may be able to retire 5 years earlier given the possible growth of that investment.

I'd buy a cheap but newish car as my vehicle is on its last legs. Then I'd want to invest at least half of it. I don't know much about investing and I'm sure considering the times we currently live in, things are changing often. What would be the best way to invest 75-100K?

Hog's Gone Fishin

Then I'd pay off my boat ,truck car. I'd still have 100K left. Probably turn it into 5 more rentals with 20K down on each.

Invest it all in IBIO.

With the way that thing is bouncing around right now, you could make some quick cash with that kind of investment. I know I've pocketed a few hundred dinking around with it. it moves 7% and flip. Then buy it back when it dips. Easy gas money at my level. lol

How's the rental market for you right now? My apartment went vacant a couple of weeks ago and I've barely gotten a nibble on it.

As for me, I've always pledged that if I got a life-changing amount of money I'd do something charitable with a third of it, via either friends, family, or a formal charity. While $150,000 isn't truly life-changing, it's enough that I'd follow through. So my spending would be:

Taxes - $60,000
Giveaway - $30,000
Splurge - $10,000. Half for me and half for my wife. I'd probably take a trip somewhere (post-virus) and she'd buy some fashion or art.
Invest - $50,000 would go into the retirement fund

You win $150K, govt is keeping half...so you've got $75k.

I'd use $50k for debt reduction, I'd invest some, give some to my church, some to a family cancer charity, pour some concrete and home improvement projects and maybe take the family on a reasonable trip.

The Franchise

Use about $50k for paying off debts, put $10k down on a new truck and put the rest in savings.

Hoover
05-21-2020, 09:51 AM
Assuming I have 75k to play with, I'd take 5k and just have some fun. Then I'd pay 50k towards my house, and while I'm at it refinance on a fixed 15 year, then take the other 20 and put it towards my laundry room/office/patio addition on the house.

TomBarndtsTwin
05-21-2020, 09:57 AM
Assume 40% (60K) is coming out off the top. That leaves 90K.

Give 10K each to my parents, my wife's parents, my brother and his family, my wife's sister and her family. That leaves 50K.

Use 10K to pay off current debt.

Put 35K in savings, retirement, investments, etc.

5K left to do something fun with for the fam. Who knows? Maybe a vacation or something. Wife wants a bathroom remodel, so maybe that.

BigBeauford
05-21-2020, 10:03 AM
90k sounds right.
10k to pay off Honda Oddyssey.
10k into stocks
5k into savings
25k into savings to be used to top off my Roth the next 5 years.
40k to buy a Tesla Model 3 cash.

I would build a sweet day cabin, (24 ft X 24ft, two story) on my extra lot on the lake. When not in use Air-B it.
Perhaps sell the larger cabin next to it and buy some property in North East Iowa to be closer to Trout Streams and better motorcycling.
The rest I would invest

If you go with the property, you'll have to have a speech ready to yell at the neighbor kids to keep their balls away.

If you go with the hooker, you'll have to ... oh, well, that's a wash.

75K 1969 Mustang Fastback Mach 1 for my dad and I 35K just save invest and gamble and use it on random shit that I need as it comes.

I briefly drove one of those when I was a teen. Nice choice. It really felt like a muscle car.

While it was less popular, I also drove a 1972 Mach I for a while, and I really liked that '72. It was less of a muscle car feel and more luxurious, which matched my personal preferences a bit better. Plus, I was a big fan of the cockpit.

Assuming you're really asking. I came across this scenario in real life.
I paid off about $20k in bills and put the rest in a stock brokerage account to invest.
Over the 3 years, I've spent $30k from that account and today it sits like I've just let it sit and haven't touched it. After a while, you'l start to look at money differently in the aspects of... You don't really need it. It doesn't make you or break you. It's nice to have but... FOR WHAT? A rainy day (like now) that you're still not using it?

Of course I kept bills to a minimum (wife's student loans).

Then you REALLY start to realize the gubment needs to keep you dependent on it. That's why they gave everyone this stimulus (imo).
To keep us dependent on a monetary system.

FFS just assume the hypothetical question includes taxes already coming out. FFS

A year ago I would have talked about spending it, and now it would all go into the stock market. I live in LA, and there is virtually no point in me even thinking about buying property there. I’d rather buy a place in Texas and keep a small affordable place in LA for when I have to be there physically.

I'd pay off my mortgage with $100k of it, then take the other 50k and buy a house far away from people and this COVID-19 madness--maybe in Alaska, maybe in rural Washington or Oregon, or maybe up in Maine. I would then rent out both units of my current house to pay the mortgage on the new house, and I'd get the fuck out of dodge. I want to be surrounded by trees, get off the grid somewhat, and not have to worry about facemasks and hunting toilet paper when the next bug hits.
