Yeah, he's not maximizing his earning potential. But I hope he's getting an absurd amount of guaranteed cash, like $300-350M fully guaranteed. Even if he's getting screwed in the later years of the deal on his annual salary compared to other QBs, a giant amount of fully guaranteed cash would at least make it a solid deal for him.

It doesn't matter in the long run but I wonder if he went traditional $35 - $40 million a year or if he went percentage.

The guaranteed cash is the only thing that matters. That should be what his agent pushed very hard on, especially since the Chiefs are likely getting a discount in the later years of his contract compared to what the average QB will be getting. We know the Dak Prescotts of the world are gonna keep driving the QB market higher and higher.

Meanwhile, this 12-year total contract puts pressure on all the other teams around the league. Deshaun Watson's agents already leaked that they would demand a better contract than Mahomes. So that means Houston is now on the clock and they are in a corner. Do they give him a 12-year contract? Same goes for Baltimore with Lamar Jackson, etc.

Well that is sweet, the only person in KC probably not thrilled about this is Chris Jones.

Given the uncertainty of next years cap, they really could not sign Jones until Patrick was signed. Patrick was always getting what he wanted it just was a matter of trying to determine the amount.

Once the Patrick's deal is announced, it might be pretty easy to tell if they left room in the budget in the next two years to make signing Jones a possibility.

I highly doubt the NFL allows you to get around the salary cap with maneuvers like that.

Possibly, as it is a little shady but the 12 year length itself is something of a first and it wouldn't be like they pay him an obviously low number...maybe locking in around 25-30 with some ownership could work. Ultimately it might not matter by now we would've heard something about a groundbreaking ownership deal I think.

Typically extensions take place after the rookie deal lapses. He will get signing bonus added on to rookie deal, but new contract money wont start for two years.

They can spread out signing bonus over first 5-6 years.

No idea how it's structured, but it IS possible Mahomes didn't maximize his value because he found a great situation and just wants to win. I wouldn't have begrudged him for a second if he did everything possible to monetize every last ounce of his talent, but he absolutely is the type of guy who might be more team-first than your average NFL player. So who else thinks the timing of this suggests they want to get something done with Jones too?

The question there will be how much cash they have, giving out 2 massive bonuses together is not an easy thing to do.

I am of the opinion that either Veech knows he is getting something done with Jones or basically shut down any chance to sign him by front loading more to Patrick. But either way Veech already knows. Just a matter to give Pat a couple days in the papers.

The fact that this contract doesn’t kick in until after his rookie contract is over in 2 years says everything.

Looks like they’ve got 2 more cheap years plus a reasonable 1st year cap hit for him. That’s 3 years to fit in Chris.

I’m hopeful
