So I have an event to go to this weekend celebrating some friends birthday the big ole number 50.
Any recommendations on drinks that are a little less common than Bourbon and beer that they would usually drink.

Summer and get-togethers demand margaritas. Particularly if you're outside.

Cool off with nice tart cold lemonlimeade, with a kick.

Celebration.

Single malt scotch from the Isle, Speyside or Islay.

Cognac (a type of brandy) for a more sophisticated taste:

Or Armagnac (Cognac from a specific region and only single-distilled)

The wives want to try a Martharita. It is a strawberry, cranberry margarita.

This sounds pretty good. Encourage it.

Should be a 50 year old Scotch to do it right

I kinda disagree, but only because single malts are the epitome of diminishing returns. $200-250 per bottle and quality to price starts to drop off quickly as the price goes up.

Especially with Islay malts. I like those a lot because the smoke is strong and pungent when young but taper off a ton around 18-20 years. I've drank a handful of 20+ year old Islays and they all leave me wanting more smoke.

If you want bubbles, you have to go with Krug. Those who judge by money tout Cristal. Those who tout by fame tout Dom Perignon. Those who tout by taste tout Krug.

Otherwise, Whistlepig Rye is good for an upper shelf bourbon that is somewhat easy to find.

Tequila: Don Julio 1942 should do it.

If you want wines, I would suggest a 2005 Chateau Lynches-Bages. Not too bad on the pocket book considering it’s Bordeaux. Should still be around and has a great flavor. If you want something from California, I would suggest Blackbird Arise, from about 2010-2014.
If you want a good dessert wine, can’t go wrong with Yquem, although it is admittedly pricey. Chateau Rieussec is a great Sauternes that won’t break the bank.

Those are where I would start.

Traditional margarita (fresh lime juice, good tequila and triple sec---nothing else!)

Nothing beats a good old Hamms.

I picked up a bottle of this recently.

It's been finished in rum barrels which gives it some nice summertime notes.

Exactly. Hand made margaritas are so easy. I use agave nectar instead of triple sec.
