View Full Version : Chiefs Is Mahomes nursing an injury?

I got this off of another message board that I'm a member of. It's a sports card collecting forum, so not a Chiefs homer forum. The other night a guy made a post in the football section stating that he believes from his experience that Mahomes is nursing a shoulder injury. Here is his post below. I won't lie, it has a little merit if you really think about it. *edit, he also added in a later post to look at that video that came out yesterday of Mahomes with those black gloves and weight ball. He said he was wincing in certain spots that would be associated with a sore/injured rotator cuff.

I played quarterback at a division 1 school from 2009-14, and while that and 25 cents will get me a brand new gumball in the year 2020 I mention it because I had enough experience playing higher level ball to get pretty good at picking stuff up relating to qb play on tape. I spent so many years watching film every single day that it’s impossible for me to watch games without picking apart the different things happening on all levels of the field, especially under center.

Anyway, I might never hear the end of this if he heals up before the playoffs and never acknowledges it, but I’d bet my house and every dime I have in the bank that Pat Mahomes is dealing with an injury to his arm, specifically his shoulder, that’s significant enough to make me worry. If you roll tape from almost any game last year and compare it to what you see this year it’s pretty easy to pick up on some troubling signs, and Andy Reid is clearly being very careful what he calls on offense. I still think that even with arm trouble Mahomes is in a class of his own among NFL quarterbacks, but I hope that doesn’t wind up becoming permanent. This kid has put a LOT of miles on his arm-if you look at the number of innings/pitches he threw as an elite starting pitcher, and how through high school and college he was QB1 for 7-8 years of insanely pass happy 60-70 attempts per game Air Raid offenses, it’s kind of amazing that he’s avoided any arm problems for this long anyway. He’s a generational megastar and as someone who loves watching gunslinger quarterbacks dominating games I really hope he stays healthy so don’t think I’m writing this for any negative reasons. I’m just surprised that this isn’t a major story yet, I’ve called a few buddies that I played ball with and they all 100 percent agreed with my assessment on this so you know there must be chatter around the league. Worth monitoring going forward, here’s hoping that he puts his long term health first and takes care of himself

So is he suggesting the injury happened in the offseason? He says there is a difference between 2019 and 2020.

I certainly wouldn’t rule out a nagging injury, but for this guy to claim Mahomes has put a lot of miles on his arm at 25 is laughable.

His arm won’t stay like this forever but the dude will still be throwing further than most QB’s at least into his early 30’s.

And what he loses on his arm, he should be offsetting with experience.

I do hope Andy continues to invest in OL though. Protecting your biggest asset is priority #1.

I like what they’re doing with CEH and the play calling which is a great start in minimizing the mileage on Mahomes.

Exactly what I thought.

It would be one thing if he said there was a change between week 1 and weeks 2-4.

He's basically saying something changed in the offseason.

Mahomes is known to sometimes overthrow his receivers. Still needs to work on his deep ball. Russ is by far the best at that

Let's not forget that Drew Brees had a devastating shoulder injury in San Diego that ultimately lead to him going to the Saints.

Where he's played for 15 seasons and thrown nearly 8500 passes.

I will say though...in 2016 Mahomes’ throwing shoulder was not in great shape after an awkward tackle/landing against Kansas. He put up 700+ yards passing with a bunch of ridiculous throws against Oklahoma only a few weeks after the Kansas injury. Maybe he’s even more of a freak than we realize.

As for long term damage from throwing too much...

Mahomes played safety until like his junior year in high school, we drafted him with only 5 years experience.

And his baseball experience is supposed to be good for quarterbacks, throwing in that different way works different muscles/ligaments, while giving him a rest from doing the same thing over and over all year.

The deep throws against Baltimore and LA are two of the most un-fucking-believable displays of arm strength we've ever seen from Mahomes.

10-09-2020, 05:49 AM
Mahomes after getting knocked down used his throwing arm to get lifted up. You don't do that with the kind of injury this guy is talking about.

If you watch Mahomes vs last year one thing is clear. The game has slowed down for him even more. He's not firing the ball as hard because he doesn't have to. He's constantly early. His placement and timing are better than last year.

If you want to see a big arm that is late watch Josh Allen who has always had slow eyes and so the ball needs to be fired harder.

As someone who was never atheltic enough to make the big show but tried to make up for it in the gym for years, and still lifts 4 days or more a week.. Anytime you start to stress a shoulder the way he is in the video your body is not gonna be thrilled. This is the kind of shit OSHA videos specifically tell you not to do. Hes stressing it on purpose. The idea is maximizing the muscle in the area to protect the joints. My old room mate was a d1 pitcher, he was always doing strange low weight rotation exercises to keep his shoulder together. Strong muscles around a joint prone to injury help keep in in place when you have to put it through the paces. Mahomes is simply doing a shit load of weight for a rotating exercise by the look of it. More super human shit.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">.<a href="https://twitter.com/PatrickMahomes?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@PatrickMahomes</a> in the lab with his coach <a href="https://twitter.com/bobbystroupe?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@bobbystroupe</a> <br><br>Details <a href="https://t.co/6l7FT4aZAK">pic.twitter.com/6l7FT4aZAK</a></p>&mdash; B/R Gridiron (@brgridiron) <a href="https://twitter.com/brgridiron/status/1313872879180800001?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">October 7, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

This video is actually pretty interesting. I've lived with a rotator cuff injury for years and watching Mahomes wince while he goes threw the throwing motion with a small weighted ball like this actually had me thinking the OP might be on to something.

Clearly, he's going through the throwing motion but this actually looks very similar to what they ask you to do while rehabbing a torn rotator cuff, and I noticed he winces at the same times I do instinctually from having had this injury for near 20 years now.

I'm not saying it's an all-out injury, he's clearly throwing the ball well, but shoulder injuries can be a tricky thing and they can often start small and progress over time. Mine feels fine if I warm it up but there's always a slight pinch during certain motions and the occasional sharp pain when I get too cocky.

All I'm saying it's an interesting theory, minor rotator cuff/shoulder injuries are very common and having been a baseball and QB star he does fit the bill as someone who would experience pain in that area.

Wishing him the best, hoping we keep an eye on it.

I think card collecting guy needs to stick to his hobby, rather than trying to come across as psychic guy, or sports medicine guy.

That’s not a wince

That’s Mahomes face whenever he throws a football or does anything strenuous

Don’t know why but he always makes that face when “concentrating”. Have you ever seen him helmetless during warmups? The guy makes the craziest faces

OP is suggesting that might be due to a shoulder injury. Welcome to the conversation.

So Mahomes has had that shoulder injury since he was drafted?

Because he made those silly faces ever since he became a Chief (and he’s thrown 100 total touchdown passes since this “wincing”. It’s a non-issue

Maybe actually pay attention to what I write

Not a wince. That’s his “thing” just like Jordan sticking out his tongue...They mentioned it in an article

Am I really the only guy here who notices our QB’s facial expressions? :)

Love Mahomes, funny guy, goofy faces. This is a non-issue

Fucking doubtful.

If he had a SLAP tear it would be season-ending, as likely would a supraspinatus tear which would be the other most likely case for a tear. We'd have seen an extremely noticeable and sudden loss of velocity on his throws if either were the case.

If it's biceps tendonitis, I can't imagine Reid not shutting him down for a few weeks to help avoid a tear.

I pretty much think this guy is talking out of his ass.
