View Full Version : Chiefs Can we talk about Tershawn Wharton?

This guy is like really fucking good.

He’s playing so well as an UDFA rookie at a position where guys just simply don’t usually play that well until year 2 or 3.

His upside is extremely high for a guy that’s just a rotational player right now. Him and Jones as our interior pass rushers is going to be unfair for the next few years.

11-02-2020, 09:45 PM
I've thought about this... it's unreal, actually. I can't think of an UDFA at an interior position from a school like Rolla that has made the jump like this kid. I mean he has tremendous potential.

MAHOMO 4 LIFE!

He’s rated as the second best Rookie defensive lineman behind Chase Young

Its like hitting the lottery.

Allows us to let KPass walk after the season. Never going to be able to pay him what he will demand on the market anyway. Hopefully we will get a nice comp pick out of the deal.

His size probably prevents him from being starting material, but with a DC like Spags, I see him getting used a LOT in key situations because he's so good and slicing through shit down the middle like a knife.

Think Wallace Gilberry but with a lot more athletic potential.

Technically he will probably never be a starter for us, but nowadays when you’re playing in subs for the majority of the game, he’s going to get a ton of snaps.

Him and Jones are a lot to deal with on passing downs.

I’m sure Khalen Saunders was given a break to rest up this past week, but it did appear like he was a healthy scratch.

That makes me wonder... did the emergence of Wharton make him a possible trade piece?

We had a phenomenal draft/UDFA from what I can tell- CEH, Danna, Sneed, Wharton and Gay. Plus we have Niang which could possibly give us some OL help next year.

Interesting idea.

Jones
Pennel
Saunders
Wharton
Nnadi

I’m not sure it’s smart to move someone unless the trade is a homerun.

I question if we want to give up on Saunders yet. Pennel is on a 1-year deal. True enough, no one was beatng down his door to offer him a contract last year, but that may not be the case after this year. How much longer do we have Nnadi locked up?

Nnadi is slated to become a FA in 2022.

I always got the feeling that Saunders was basically Nnadi's back-up, at least for another year. If he pans out, then think about trading Nnadi.

I expect Wharton to continue to improve as he learns the DT role and technique from Brendan Daly and fellow DTs. Also think he will get even stronger in the next couple of years through the Chiefs weight training. In college he was playing a DE position at a much lighter weight, so he has the opportunity to really improve.

I don't really see that Mike Pennel is being used more looking at snap counts, but he is playing more like he is pacing himself. Last year he played with a huge rush of energy and could overwhelm his blocker to make the tackle.

He played last year at 255.

He currently weighs about 285.

No, it's not right.

He played last year at 255.

He currently weighs about 285.

Looking at him I'm skeptical.

Much like the vikings did with john randall's weight, I think they're bulking him up on paper.

Remember randall? He started out as a 240 pound defensive tackle in the nfl. They always billed him heavier than he was.

To add to what htismaqe said, Wharton played DE at Missouri S&T (Rolla) and was listed at the 6'4", 255 pounds. Not sure what his weight actually was but when he participated in the 2020 East West Shrine Bowl, he was measured and weighed. He was 6'1" and weighed 280 pounds with a 76.25" arm span and 10.25" hands. His arms are only 31.25", so not long armed at all.

Chiefswire.com spoke with Brett Eiskina (Breakthrough Sports), a trainer for Wharton before the season and they said he was 290 pounds, ran a 4.7 40 time, 32 bench presses of 225, 35 inch vertical, and 10' broad jump.

I really did not believe all of the hype. Made me think of past hype for players that never panned out. He appears to be the real deal...sorry bad choice of words. He appears to be a good football player.

This man has been quite the find by Veach. I keep hearing his name when he is on the field so he is certainly making an impact. A couple games back he ran down a running back from behind. Epinesa is a DE, Wharton is a DT. Not sure what you're getting at here?Wharton can do both. My point, though, was that he is putting up better numbers playing inside than Epinesa on the edge (as a UDFA vs. second rounder).

Granted, he's playing more, but that's a great indicator as well.

He’s a rotational player. It’s impressive that he plays at as light of a weight as he does and still does well in those specific situations. He’s getting snaps and making the most of them.

He’s a good player, but don’t confuse him for guys like Jones and Clark who put in far more snaps and are asked to serve more responsibilities from play to play than someone like Wharton.

Dominating teams at a lower level is a good thing, but he was dominating teams at a very low level. Rolla is a step below semi-pro ball. I think it would be really hard to evaluate a player in that situation. It would be like evaluating you or me playing basketball against third graders.

He actually displayed skills on the field, as opposed to combine warriors who run a good 40, throw up a big number in the bench press, etc. but they never dominated the competition.

That is the point I was trying to make. Combine numbers are impressive (remember Conley) however, lesser numbers but with a track record of dominating in games, should hold more weight in my opinion.

When my son was starting at S&T, while they had the incoming freshmen out taking their "welcome to S&T" test, we were talking to the football coach and he said that while they didn't really win too many championships at S&T, he had the only football team that had both lines that could differentiate equations. Tershawn Wharton played DE at Missouri S&T.

Chiefs like flexibility with their players.

It might be interesting to see him shift outside sometimes.

Might be necessary shift if Okafor not ready to come back or stay healthy.

Yeah, but I'd be careful. If his strength and asset to the defense is to come in on pass rush downs as an extra interior penetrator, then let's get him honing that part of his game so that he becomes a monster in the rotation.

If he adds muscle and bulk to become a more flexible DT, it would be a shame if we lost some of that lethal pressure he generates when he gets on the field.

This is, of course, me being an uneducated fan. I could very well be totally wrong about his career path in the NFL.

And if our 3rd round DT from a year ago has already fallen out of favor that’s not really a good look, so i hope that’s not the case. In a vacuum it’s not that big a deal, but when you factor in the Speaks pick from the year before and Kpass the year before that it’s not ideal if you have almost nothing to show from two 2nds and a 3rd spent on the DL.

Does him being a healthy scratch mean he’s a bust though? Seems like we have a decent line rotation and if we have Wharton, Nnadi, and Jones all taking turns on the interior that’s not bad. I would guess is something happened to Nnadi then Saunders would start playing again, right?

Mike Danna looks to me like a very prototypical strong side end. He plays the run well, he uses his hands and feet to engage and disengage really well.

The only things he lacks are elite explosion or fluidity. He basically can be a better Kpass for us.

We're a 12-1 team so I'm not disappointed in anything other than the one loss. But I will say that I'm surprised that Kpass hasn't become more of a force. He made great strides forward last year, and I never really see him make an impact play this year. He ties up a blocker and that's about it. Given the good play of the other d-linemen, I'm a little surprised that he's still getting the starting role and playing time.

I’m not saying that can’t happen but NFL S&C programs are mostly based on injury prevention & rehab, mobility and maintenance.

They’re expected to be near peak strength and weight when they get here.

It’s a lot more fragmented with guys often using their own personal trainers in the off season.

I suspect both would have some “maxing out” left. Missouri S&T and Central Michigan don’t exactly have big-time training resources like the Power 5 conference teams.

Danna spent one year at Michigan so he’s probably closer, but I’d bet they can sculpt Wharton a bit more.

I'm curious about Tershawn's career path and aspirations. If went to Rolla for school, I would think that he wasn't necessarily planning for an NFL career. Did he always think that he was on a path to the NFL, or was he just at Rolla to pursue a regular career and play football for a few more years? Once he was dominating in college, when did he start to wonder if the NFL was a possibility? There are lots of guys who dominate at that level and never even get a training camp invitation.

Dude looks like he's smuggling babies in his shoulders and biceps. I dont recall how physically imposing he looked last season, but this season the dude is built like the goddamn hulk.

Yea there’s a noticeable difference.

He’s going to be really fucking good.

I love how our pass rush supposedly sucks, but we have 3 legitimate interior pass rushers that can wreck havoc. They’re going to make whoever is playing DE’s job much easier.

Looks more like a 5-tech end than a DT.

Reed looks EXACTLY like a DT.

I'm still in awe of that guy's build. I think he may be the most physically imposing guy the Chiefs have ever had.

I do wonder if this is a bit by design. Veach couldve had Basham. He could’ve invested in DE, considering how aggressively he pursued OL. Some of that could’ve been used at DE.

It does make you think that Veach isn’t as concerned as we are. Maybe he’s anticipating a rematch with the Bucs in the Super Bowl and wants to generate substantial interior pressure, since Brady is no threat to escape. He saw what happened to Ford and Houston in AFCCG. I think they maybe generated 1 pressure combined.

I've wondered this too. I mean Reed fell in their lap, but they didnt have to go get him. They chose too add him to a pretty good room already.

A couple of years ago when asked about the future of NFL defenses, Andy said that he felt interior pass rushers were the future. Remember that? Because it's a shorter distance to the QB, and it totally disrupts timing and passing lanes.

Well, I think we're about to find out if that theory is true.

If you can destroy the pocket from inside, then all your ends have to do is hold containment.

Seems like a sound plan to me.

The side benefit of this is that it allows your base set the versatility to rush the passer but defend the edge against this new wave of running QB's like Lamar and Murray. The Chiefs have done a good job against Jackson the last couple of years and they're fixing to get better at it.

I also wonder if teams are over-investing at OT, which is forcing them to limit their investment in the IOL.

I heard a stat recently that like 80% of starting OTs in the Super Bowl were first or second round picks. Can’t remember the specifics, but it was substantial.

If teams are leaving the interior vulnerable, throwing more, and getting rid of the ball quickly, then it makes sense to invest at DT.

Chiefs’ second-year defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, who has also put together a very strong training camp, was outright dominant against the 49ers. According to Pro Football Focus, Wharton recorded four total pressures, including a sack, two hurries and a hit. He also recorded two stops and a forced fumble on the night.

Could well be by the end of the year.

I think you have to argue that Reed and Clark are ahead of him for now based on their resumes.

I would put Nnadi ahead of him for now too. He’s been a solid starter.

Wharton is a beast plus love anybody on the team that was a wrestler.
