Chiefs will receive a 3rd round comp pick if Bieniemy becomes a minority HC...

Pretty much every game the announcers state he wont be Chiefs OC for long...

Sweet deal...3rd round has been kind to KC.

Where did you read that? That's awesome...those picks, potentially, are going to go a long way in helping once Mahomes' contract kicks in.

Also, Fuller’s comp pick is projected to be a 4th now, so in ‘21 we will have:

1st
2nd
3rd
3rd
4th

5th

This roster is going to be so nasty for as long as we have Veach.

It's a comp pick just like if a team signs one of our free agents.

The league gives them to us at the end of the third round; they are going to serve as compensatory picks. So the hiring team won’t be giving them up.

No I understand that, I just think this will somewhat discourage minority hires.

No one is thrilled about KC receiving two third round picks.

This is a no lose situation for us. Either EB becomes a head coach and we get two third round picks or EB stays and we continue to run roughshod over the NFL while having the best OC in the league

I dont think KC will miss EB much as far as offensive productivity...maybe the sideline "rah-rah" motivator aspect. They didn't when both Nagy and Pederson left...

Reid is the OC and has always been...who ever becomes their new "OC" will simply be an extension of a system that is already in place. Nothing will really change...

Reid is a good mentor for how to run a stable organization...it's why his coaching tree is huge. That will be why Bieniemy is hired...not for KC's offense. They know it's Reid's show..

It is usually Draft order for that draft. However, there are multiple categories of comp picks that can scramble that around a bit. I'd imagine this would be a new category, but have no idea how they would order it with the other categories.

I am more worried about losing whoever it is on our defensive staff that is breaking down film. Someone there is doing great work..

We are one of the few teams that knew exactly what to do against Allen (mess up his pre-snap reads), Lamar (pack the triangle)..etc

I agree with this....I think the innovation of the offense comes mostly from Reid. I'm sure that EB contributes in meaningful ways to a degree, but as BlackOps mentions, the offense was fine post Nagy and Pederson, and I'm assume they also had some level of meaningful contribution as well.

However, while I say that: Neither Philly nor the Bears looks anywhere close to innovative that the Chiefs offense does, although that could be simply because of the athletic talent or execution on the field moreson than the design of the play or how the plays are even called.

So, I agree that we probably don't miss EB as much as EB misses Andy and the players he had in KC.

It's two picks, one in the initial year of the hire and one in the next year.

So if someone hires EB this February, we'll get a 3rd-round comp pick in 21 and 22.

Honestly, that's one of the big benefits of hiring an ex-head coach to be a coordinator.

Not only do you get his positive experience but you get his NEGATIVE experience too. While people talk about EB like he has one foot out the door, you know Spags isn't hopping to go anywhere.

Does anyone actually believe a team would make a head coach decision based on picking up a 3rd round pick? I mean, great for us and everything but Eric B was going to be hired anyways. That's because he's a great coach, not because he's black. This is just a PR thing.

The Chargers would probably throw in additional picks for Bieniemy's knowledge of Reid's offense alone. So there is no way the 3rd round comp picks would dissuade them.

Also, I think I'm reading this rule correctly, but it's only first time minority head coaches, right? If a team hires Todd Bowles, the Bucs don't get two 3rd round picks, correct?

And let's say Andy Reid retired after this season and the Chiefs promoted Bieniemy. Would we get draft picks?

Does anyone really want our coaches to go to division rivals? If this is what stops the chargers from going after EB (i doubt it would) then great. We don't want our rivals having inside knowledge. There's a reason why the Lions, Titans, Texans and Miami have beaten the Pats over the the last few years...all HC's who are former Pats coaches. I don't think it's a coincidence our defense shut them down last year after we got Daley either.

His dad is NOT white..therefore by definition he could qualify as a minority coach. And if Mike gets the oc job once EB leaves there's no way he's gonna be here for more than a year or two.

I seriously doubt that Mike Kafka's going to be a hot commodity after only a few years of being a QB coach and OC.

Maybe 5 years down the line but certainly not a year or two.

Its kinda looking like 5 years total is all it takes.

Doug Pederson was a QB coach for 2 years and OC for 3 years before being hired as a HC.

Matt Nagy was QB coach for 4 years, OC for 1, then was hired a HC.

Kafka has already been a QB coach for 3 years.

Bill is already having his coaches update their profiles to identify as black.

Seriously though. What is the percentage to qualify?

What is he then? Hispanic?

If so, bring on the picks!

He looks olived skinned to me. The Kafka name has a jewish background so could be that. Or maybe native American or Italian American. When you look at Mike Kafka you can see he has olive skin too so i'm not convinced he's a full white person. Somewhere down the line there's some flavour lurking :D .

I think that would be a mistake.

He figured out how to make Trubisky look competent for about half of a season. That’s pretty damn good.

He deserves to be in charge of picking his own QB that the franchise won’t let him have.

I agree. But I listen to a lot of Chicago Sports talk and if he doesn't win some games, the Bears are going to do a complete overhaul.

So where does everyone think EB will land?

My brain says that he should go to the Texans, but that organization is so FUBAR after BOB screwed them over.

My brain says that San Diego could be a dark horse. Anthony Lynn is objectively terrible. I don't care how many close games they have had, he just isn't a head coach. And the Chargers gave him a fair chance.

If the Jets end up with the first pick, he could go there. But if they don't get the first pick, then he should stay TF away.

Am I missing a team?

Atlanta.I thought about them, but Matty Ice ain't going anywhere, and I am not sure they would take a QB in the draft.

If they were smart they'd take a QB in the draft, sit him for a year, and get rid of Ryan next year when he has an out in his contract.

Perfect situation IMO. I think he could win with Ryan at QB, but not ideal to keep him. Jets might be a better gig with Lawrence, but damn that's a full rebuild in a tough town.

You would think more teams would be willing to try the Mahomes formula, but most teams don't have a head coach who knows he isn't going to be fired, and most teams have owners who don't understand why sitting their prized 1st round QB isn't a bad thing.

Tua may have played well against the Cards, but he was bad in his first start. Fitzpatrick was going to lead that team to the playoffs, and Tua could have continued to learn how to be a pro while having no pressure put on him.

I’m going with the Jags. Then draft Fields.

They have more talent to work with than the Jets, especially weapons on offense, and they have more pieces on defense too. Like the Jets, they also have a lot of picks this year to get better.

Ryan has an out year in his contract after 2021. It's not ideal but it is a potential cut point.

They'd have to get rid of coach and GM. The front office still likes the porn star QB.

Atlanta.

This! I think Atlanta is right for him. They will have a somewhat offense for him to work with and a mediocre defense. With the RIGHT draft picks and free agency, it could actually work. Brees is on the short end of his career and Brady has shown nothing. Could be interesting.

I wouldn't want to be a first time HC in the same division as Reid/Veach/Mahomes...that would a hard pass. How many coaches came and went in the AFCE....

I do think Bieniemy's hard-nose attitude would fix a lot of the Chargers late-game collapses though...McCoy wasn't even dressed for the SB.

No joke. Bills 10, Dolphins 10, Jets 6.

They showed it during the game the other night.

I’m still leaning EB goes back to Cincy (player there). I’m not convinced they’re sold on Taylor and he really hasn’t shown much to support he deserves a long leash there. Don’t see how Cincy doesn’t see the upgrade that move presents, and I think they have the QB/young talent that would attract EB to want to go there.

No way. They're not splitting with Taylor this soon and I'm not sure there's any evidence to suggest EB is a clear upgrade anyway. There's no way you can say that about a guy that's never been a head coach before - he's an unknown, regardless of his pedigree.

You’re higher on him than I am, I don’t see much argument for him personally outside of “he hasn’t had enough time”. They aren’t overachieving, Burrow isn’t setting the league on fire, and there isn’t much that I’ve seen that would indicate they found “their guy”. He was hired strictly due to having shared a room with Sean Mcvay, I think he’s in over his head. There’s enough talent on that team to do something similar to what Miami is doing but they just aren’t there yet and i think it’s due to the HC more than anything, we’ll see if ownership feels the same way.

EB is definitely an unknown but from a brand new HC perspective, you really couldn’t carve up a better pedigree for a first timer outside of maybe younger.

Miami is SIGNIFICANTLY better in the trenches than Cincinnati. The Bengal's offensive line is arguably the worst in the league.

Miami is also getting Houston's 1/2 round picks next draft....which may be in the top 10.

They hit on those picks and Tua pans out...they are going to turn things around pretty quickly with a cheap QB for the next 4 years...and no state tax.

Their coach seems to have his shit together too...

Like the "Grizz" said, Vance Joseph was part of what went on at CU back then and he's been a head coach.

I'm of the opinion that EB is really no different than Nagy or Pederson, and Kafka will be just as good. Same as coaches leaving the Belichick coaching tree, the true genius is the man at the top.

If Pederson gets fired by the Eagles I wouldn't mind bringing him back as a spread coordinator. Give Kafka the OC and let Pederson be another guy to work on the concepts.

Reid is the genius but it helps to have more smart people in the room bouncing ideas off each other.

I'd still prefer to keep EB, I think he's a quality coach. Of course, it may be around the time one of the other coaches that was hired away gets fired and can come back.
