There's so many examples of cartoon themes that are so great, even if the content of the actual show is pretty bad. The theme for the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon is still a banger, but watching just a few minutes of the show I wonder how in the hell we were into it as kids.

It's hard to go against Gilligan's Island for pure memorability. We all know the words and the show hasn't been on since Lyndon Johnson was president.

The ending song of WKRP certainly is a great fit for the show, as is the theme from Friends.

It's really hard to separate out the theme song from the show. If it's a good show, you tend to like the theme song. I'll throw The Office out there. The song doesn't boggle me, but it makes me smile when I hear it.

And Cheers? Same thing. I smile when I hear it, and the song is a great fit for the show.

How much do we conflate the song with the show? Should the theme stand on its own? Or should it match the show and thus it's great not just as music but also because of the show? How many of these would you listen to just by itself?

Using that criteria (I would listen by itself), I would have a hard time naming one theme as the best, but a list to me would include:

Hill Street Blues
Benny Hill (add it to the background of any video and that video is automatically better)
Sopranos
Mission Impossible
Dukes of Hazzard
Peter Gunn
The Wire

The reason why Theme Songs for TV series have either been extremely short or even non-existent is because the Networks figured out that short theme would allow them to charge advertisers for an additional 15-45 seconds.

Also, the Theme Songs cost a lot of money for production companies and networks, so there's a major savings there as well. Also, theme songs need to be re-licensed each and every year, which costs the network a lot of money.

The Sopranos theme song wasn't written for the series and was released two years prior to the show going to air by the Alabama 3.

Just like the Cops theme, it was a Synchronization of an existing song and not a Work-For-Hire composition specifically composed as a Theme.

The reason why Theme Songs for TV series have either been extremely short or even non-existent is because the Networks figured out that short theme would allow them to charge advertisers for an additional 15-45 seconds.

Also, the Theme Songs cost a lot of money for production companies and networks, so there's a major savings there as well. Also, theme songs need to be re-licensed each and every year, which costs the network a lot of money.

The bottom line is, just like everything, the less money spent equal more profit for the networks.

In 1981 I owned a 77 Pete COE, small cam 350 Cummins pulling a refer OTR. Only time it was a bitch was backing in and out it tight shipping/receiving docks. Back in those days we had states were your gross vehicle weight with 73 280 and you had to slide the 5th wheel to get your weight up on your steering axle to be legal, stretch it back out when you could, especially when you got to unloading docks. You stretched it out all the way to get the weight off the steering axle.

I use to look forward every week to see what was going to happen on Six Feet Under, the theme and opening was perfect for a family who operated a mortuary. For those who never saw the show, it was on HBO for five seasons, 63 episodes and hour each in the early 2000's. The cast all went on to become famous, Richard Jenkins and James Cromwell were already famous. The others were Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Rachel Griffiths, Jeremy Sisto, Lauren Ambrose, Frances Conroy and Freddy Rodriguez you've probably seen all on other shows since.

I haven't seen it mentioned, but objectively, the Simpsons theme is top 3 and should be on any list.

It's complex yet easy to follow, AND it's definitely iconic.

Some of these others people are posting like the Addams Family might be iconic, but they're really not that good.

The Simpsons is the whole package. It might be #1, but for sure top 3. And if you disagree, you're a giant idiot.

I myself, first got behind the wheel of a 640 Farmall ( ArmStrong steering ) tractor in the hayfield at age 11, next year at age 12 was disking up the fields for crops.

Someone posted it earlier and for some reason I can't find it now, but wow on The Ropers theme. Every single thing about that show with one exception is a warning to stay away. How did a producer think it was a good idea? Let's dissect this abomination.

Then you transition to an annoying old woman in a muumuu dancing, and then we transition to a shot of Howard Fell giving the longest and most leering pedophile look possible before he begins a soft shoe dance with a toilet plunger.

At this point we go to Jeffrey Tamboor acting pompous in a terrible dated suit that makes me itch just seeing it. And you close it with the single thing that makes any show terrible - a small child actor.

But then in the middle of that pit of creative sewage and despair, the sudden light of a rainbow shines ever so briefly over the dismal world that some network hack vomited out of his rum-soaked cerebellum.

How did she end up here? What dream was she pursuing that got sidelined by The Ropers? What happened to her afterward? Did she ever recover from being trapped on this show? Did it force her into a death spiral of bad sitcoms to commercials to softcore porn to things we can't even imagine on the dark net? Where is she now and what can we do to help her?
