Talk about, report, and complain about weather here. It does not matter where you live. Talk about what you got. Snow, wind, hail, storms, virga, meatballs. Give information about what city is close to you. Pics are great too.

This map can be used by anyone and moved to your area. It is customizable for you and gives a lot of information.

We got about a foot start last night, but since it hit on Saturday going into Sunday the impact wasn't that bad. The worst was dealt with by the time I had to go anywhere today.

The best part of living in a townhome is somebody else shovels the fucking snow.

The windy app is great. Although their radar does not show fine snow like the NWS does.

I have my new (donated) station running well at school and the website is better than before. Everything at my old school is pretty much bricked with no one knowing what the hell to do and not there. Put on a disclaimer that if anyone had issues-email another teacher. Not a fan of hers.

Got about 6 here in Iowa. Been a great winter here and very atypical. It snows, warms up and melts the streets. No sub Arctic temps just nice 30-35 degree days.

Winter here has been super mild. Almost as if the weather wanted to ease me back into real winters vs shocking the shit out of me after a decade plus of AZ winters. But honestly, I love winter days. The grayer and snowier, the better. So it's kinda been a bit of a subdued deal so far. February yet to come, we'll see.

I planted a peach tree and pruned my pomegranate tree today.

I have a Barbados cherry tree and one night last week with all the wind and rain my protective structure got blown off. The temp in the yard got to 37 (maybe lower) and it froze the shit out of it. Looks pretty rough and not sure it will make it. The overnight lows here this winter have been dipping into the 30's on a consistent basis (weeks on end), which is not always the case. I've had to cover plants more nights this winter than ever.

Yeah Key West always stays warmer during the South Florida cold fronts because they are about 150 miles south of Miami and are surrounded by the ocean.

The inland suburbs in Miami/Broward really get the brunt of the the cold fronts... with overnight temperatures in the 40’s and 30’s and wind chills even lower.

ROFL I can feel the hate through the computer screen.

Hilariously, dad told me the coldest he's ever been ever was in Iowa. Him and some other guys did a Deere tour in I wanna say the late 70s or early 80s. If it was a Gold Key thing it was like 82. He said the high for the couple days he was there was like 0 and -20s as the low. He said there was a damn snow drift in his hotel room one morning. ROFL Just brutal cold everywhere. Said the only place he was warm was the foundry. God I laugh every time he brings it up. He damn near shivers every time.

Dad hates the cold as much as anyone I've ever met.

Fucking Iowa man.

If the average high in the summer was 60, would that be no good? 65? 68? 70? Note that we're talking about the daily high.

tell ya what man, after going thru a 3 year drought that finishes off with one of the largest bush fires in recorded history, it's done nothing but fucking rain, man!

right now it should be 90-95 F.

we are averaging a high of 68 F w/fucking rain. There is morning dew on our cars (even when not raining, man) at what is supposed to be the hottest time of the year.

I love winter. No yardwork, lower electric bill, No heat and humidity, No tornadoes, and Chiefs and Jayhawk games.

You have to do summer yard work but don't have to move your own snow? What kind of rent-controlled hippy commune do you live in?

Oh and by the way...

Not that I know how long that stretch goes on that highway, but I can't think of many highways like that in KC, except for 169 near downtown and maybe parts of 69 and 435 in OP, where there's very little shoulder and just no way to even attempt to get out of the way.

From what I read, the accidents occurred on a bridge which freezes faster. Whenever I cross a bridge in those conditions, I do not press the brake. Might not have mattered.

I am not sure of the whole situation, but this did occur in TX, where people don't know how to drive on snow or ice. I am not sure if it would mattered. Crazy Germans drive on the Autobahn in dense fog at eleventy billion miles an hour and wonder why there are pile ups.

Texas does not salt. TxDoT typically uses either sand or sprays deicing fluid on bridges and overpasses.
Speculation is that this particular bridge was not properly treated with the deicing fluid. Time will tell.

I have been in Austin for 20+ years and have always said that I prefer snow to ice if I HAVE to drive in it. Oh, and I don't miss shoveling snow!

But man, when you start spinning and can't get control back like that it is just a helpless feeling. I did that once on an overpass. Spun the wheel but couldn't get control. I was only going maybe 20 MPH. When I knew I had to let it ride out I threw my hands in the air and said "Whelp, that's all." My wife at the time freaked out thinking we were going over the edge. Right there with you on preference of snow over ice. We get that 1/4-1/2 “ of black ice on the road first and then the snow covers it up. Makes driving pretty tricky for sure

We've warmed up to 9. But the worst part was I couldn't find my snow shovel and had to go to Walmart. That place was a fucking madhouse.

Followed a salt truck into work this morning.

It was -16. Salt rarely works and the exhaust water from cars freezes on the highway making it very slick.. Yikes what a difference down here. 76 degrees today. My wife is heading back to Missouri today. Supposed to be 0 or something like that.

How to drive on ice: you don't

Yeah. I can actually drive on snow even though I don't seek it out. In Ice you have no chance. We don't have near as much ice storms up here as they do in Northern Texas and Oklahoma. They have ice storms all the time and they are BRUTAL. I was in OKC 5 years ago and it iced, you couldn't really see it, it came on fast and you couldn't go over 20 mph without sliding. It was insane and the most difficult driving conditions I've ever driven in. It's more than a - they don't know how to drive in wintery conditions deal. Most Oklahoman's probably know how to drive on ice better than KC residents do because they encounter it more.

In February 2007 180K Iowans lost power because of a Ice Storm.
I remember because all my extended family stayed with me, under candlelight and home heated by wood for about a week.
It was a zoo and all my food quickly disappeared.
At least we didn't need a freezer.
My kids still call our house the Apocalypse House.

I think Breda Iowa did not have power for 2 weeks. Dad was on REC board in Calhoun County. Some lines had 20 breaks per mile. They replaced a lot of lines. Dad put in a line switch and bought an 8000 watt generator. So he can stay warm and watch cowboy movies. He used it once or twice. It had 80 hours on it when I took it.

It is an old floor furnace that only radiates heat.

We have mini-splits for A/C, and they have heat pumps but we never use them. The floor furnace is a monster.

It's old-school.

I light the pilot with a stick lighter or blowtorch through the basement. It can be set to run continuous if the electricity goes out and the thermostat/solenoid doesn't have juice to activate the gas flow valve.

I was in TX (Ft Hood) for work last week when the Winter storm hit and blackouts started happening everywhere.

Sat 2/13 I was on base, Freezing rain started to hit hard. Base shut down early as roads were closing/getting bad due to the weather. So it was about a half day, left to return to hotel around lunch. Tried to order some togo food, stop in a drive thru, everyone was leaving/closing due to weather. Luckily HEB store behind my hotel was open and so I go a bunch of groceries to last a few days since I assumed nothing was gonna be open the next day, including the base.

Sun 2/14...base closed down, sat in hotel all day and day drank. Sun night it snowed pretty good.

Mon 2/15 Actually made driving conditions better as the snow packed on top of the ice for better tread. Worked on base all day. By this point, HEB was a madhouse, lines going outside doors and around building, people fighting. Insane. Mon night power got knocked out in area. It was late so I just finished watching a movie on my phone as I dozed off. Our work project was set to complete on Tues, so I had set to check out Tues morning.

When I woke up 2/16, I still didn't have power and other places around hotel were without power. At the time I thought it was just my area, called my coworker who said base shut down again lol. He was staying at hotel down the road, they did have power. So I checked out and made my way over there to see if I could get a room because I didn't think every hotel in area would be booked up due to rolling blackouts and people without water.

I just wanted a room with power. I drove back south towards Austin to see if I ran into anything avaliable. There wasn't. I tried about 20 hotels on phone app and stopped in about handful of places as I saw them on the way.

Finally by accident found a Comfort Inn in Georgetown TX, about halfway from Ft Hood to Austin. A guy was checking out when I walked in and asked if I could get his room. Luckily there wasn't anyone ahead of me so she said if I could wait a couple hrs they would clean it and have it ready for me to use. She gave my room key to me and I went to get something to eat. Luckily Applebees was open for togo orders down the road, about the only place that was open by this point.

So I'm thinking the days gonna turn out ok. Got warm food in my belly. Had to toss out some of the frozen microwavable food I bought at HEB because of the fridge/microwave being without power the night before at the other hotel. So I was down to some snacks, candy..shit like that. 2hrs later I'm watching TV, damn thing goes out and the lights go off.

FUCK.

This hotel also lost power, and would be without power for Tues, Wed, and Thur am when I checked out. Got dispatched out to Kerrville TX which is about hr west of Austin, about a 2hr drive in normal conditions. Shit still coming down, and most of the way was shoulderless back country roads that look like ice rinks. A 2hr drive look me 3.5hrs avg about 30mph passing every 4x4 SUV/truck in my Nissan Altima rental lol. Do my thing in Kerrville and drove back to Georgetown, made sure to keep my room this time because no guarantee I'd get another one somewhere. So about 7hrs worth of driving in shit conditions to do about 30min of work...stupid.

Thur drive to Austin to fly home, my logistics dept books my flights. Snow coming down hard again. All flights to KC out of Austin are either cancelled or booked. Same with San Antonio airport. Only flight available is out of Dallas...it was about 1030am at this time. 3hr drive in normal conditions form Austin to Dallas.

Took me almost 6 fuckin hrs to get there due to traffic/wrecks. Most of the time was just getting out of Austin. Once I got to about Waco, the skies parted, got sun and blue skies and roads had melted...although Texans still avoided the left hand lane as the hogged middle and right lanes...fine by me...it was like an expressway...again...passing all the scared 4x4 with jacked up lift kits in my little Nissan.

I was lucky to have made it to DAL, got to gate as they were boarding. It was a good thing I got gas the day before (premium was only option available. Otherwise I wouldn't been able to find gas anywhere...that was another big problem.

Gotta little taste though what it's like to live in countries like Venezuela. At home I have storable foods, and tons of meat in the deep freeze, pasta and canned goods to last if shit does hit the fan, I can feed myself for a year easily...my only problem would be eventually water supply.

I found 2 Amazon packages in the front yard yesterday after the thaw that had likely been out there for a week or two.

Good news is the access door to my garage is closing flush again. Thing had to of shifted an inch or so under the weight of the snow. Trash and recycling pick ups are back on schedule. Now just need my mail to be delivered but that's likely a separate topic altogether.

It's been in the 60s and 70s the past couple of days here in Colorado, but we have a very unpredictable set of multiple fronts coming in. The snow forecast along the front range is "15 to 60 inches of snow" over a four-day system. It sounds like it's likely going to be on the lower end, but 60 inches would be an interesting experience. In 27 years of living here, the most I've ever seen in one front was 32.

Tell me about it. Also, they're expanding the main road outside my subdivision from two lanes to four this year, including redoing a nearby railroad trestle, so I'm going to be in construction hell for the foreseeable future. Absolutely no way to avoid it. :banghead:

We had a storm back in 2014 that produced hail that big. The biggest one I saw was not quite as big as a tennis ball. Only time I ever experienced large hail like that. Very happy I have a garage, because every car parked outside sustained damage.
