AP: In Kansas City, hope for a Super Bowl victory comes with fear of celebratory gunfire

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While many in the Kansas City area will be cheering Sunday for the Chiefs to win another Super Bowl, there is one thing that police hope is not repeated this year: people marking the occasion by firing guns into the air.

Last year, police received more than 160 calls to 911 about gunfire between 5 and 10 p.m. Most of those calls were attributed people celebrating the Super Bowl.

“We want people to celebrate responsibly, but they need to be safe,” Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said Friday during a news conference outside police headquarters. “It is not safe to shoot a gun off in an unknown direction or up into the air.”

How much of it was actually fireworks instead of gunshots lol. I was in Leawood and definitely heard/saw a lot of fireworks.

I've had cops show up to my house in the past cuz I got drunk and lit off fireworks for "reported gunshots".

LMAO
Probably not. True high powered ammo is expensive, and the vast majority would be fired from something like a bolt-action. Firing a bunch of .30-06 for example with the rifle pointed nearly straight up is a recipe for a shoulder injury. And statistically most reports of gunshots around the holidays (the 4th, New Years) are actually just fireworks. The average citizen can't tell the difference.

That's a fact. When I lived in Gilbert (a top 5 safest place in America for years) the NextDoor app would be filled on a weekly basis with posts about

"did you hear those gunshots last night?" I almost posted a retort that we must live in an area populated only by Storm Troopers because you would never see follow ups on the neighborhood app or in the paper/news about gunshot victims, property damage, hurt pets, etc.

I guess to a lot of people:

gunshots=car backfire=fireworks=unexplained loud noises of any kind

I can tell the difference and there was definitely high caliber ammo being shot off.

Yep and if you have an app like neighborhood or nextdoor that's a favorite post. Did you just hear gunshots in bla bla neighborhood? Those apps have become the gunshots and lost doggie and kittie network nowadays.

Popular in the old days waterfowl market hunters would use punt guns to clean out ducks and geese and it was legal then. Bet there were some sore shoulders but alas they were tougher then.

when I took my handgun class-instructor said that if fired at the wrong angle, they can still cause damage or injury far away depending on caliber.

Well, it's still stupid and irresponsible, but obviously not nearly as bad as aimed shots fired in the direction of others.

A shot fired in the air is dangerous, but when it falls back to earth, the bullet isn't traveling at muzzle velocity; just gravity velocity. Probably wouldn't kill a person, but as with any small metal object falling from a great distance, it could do serious bodily harm.

Lot of variables. But the short version is that small light bullets probably won't kill anyone, while larger heavier ones might. Of course, the odds of being hit by a falling round are extremely small.

I thin shooting into the air to celebrate is pretty damn stupid to begin with but......This may sound strange to some people but you know if you are concerned about this the simple solution is to simply not go outside into a freezing ass cold night for no reason. Especially in the extremely rare possibility you hear gunshots near by.

My neighborhood is a fucking nightmare of gunfire for any celebration including full auto, high capacity mags, etc. Really there were times when I would hear gunfire almost every night. I collect shells that I find when walking or biking the neighborhood.

The gunfire has decreased dramatically over the last 6 months. The celebrations like NYE now only last 5 minutes and the intensity was likely a third. The nightly gunfire has gone from 4 or 5 times a week to maybe once a week.
Kind of been loving this expensive ammunition "problem"!
